Reader Buzz

August 22nd, 2006 @ 12:23 pm by Mrs. Bee

When I asked readers what they’d like to see more of on weddingbee, Milka suggested asking readers open ended questions about their wedding planning process. I thought this was an excellent idea to get the weddingbee community buzzing, and learn from everyone’s personal planning experiences. It’s a new feature we’re going to test out called “Reader Buzz.” Our first ever Reader Buzz topic is:

How did you ask your bridemaids and maid of honor to be in your wedding party?

I made crossword puzzles that they had to figure out and assemble into a poem

“[Name of bridesmaid],
When I walk down the aisle
As a happy bride
It will mean so much to me
To have you by my side
You help me laugh and grow
A true friend all the way
Will you be my bridesmaid [or maid of honor]
And share my wedding day?”

(Btw, how is this feature different from “Open Question”?)

Open question addresses one reader’s specific problem. Reader buzz will be general questions that apply to all or most weddingbee readers. we’re testing it out to see how it does. :)

I just asked my bridesmaids… I didn’t do anything particularly special and I kinda regret that. :(

i custom made t-shirts (on dazzle.com) - cute white fitted t shirts that said

“stand by me” - in brown ink

and just below, in tiny lettering, i put

“maid for peachy october 2006″ - in purple lettering

I made silk bouquets in my colors and mailed them to the girls with a tag that said “Be my bridesmaid?” There was a note on the outside that said to call me before they open them. This way, it was like I was there! One of my BMs lives in Canada and another in MS, so it was fun to do something for them.

Aww! Fame! :)

After attempting to make crafty cards (and ending up crap resembling a 4th grader’s art project) I sent my ladies a dozen red roses to be delivered at work and a card saying, “Will you do me the honor of being my bridesmaid?”

Everyone likes getting roses at work. :)

I made my bridesmaids and MOH a little card, and I also gave them a bottle of the Philosphy Bridal shower gel with a box of Godiva chocolates. Of course, all but one of my bridesmaids knew they were going to be a part of my wedding, but I did enjoy surprising all of them with the present.

Yeah, my friend just called me on the phone to be in hers…nothing special. But I was truly honored. I will definitely do something special for them when I ask my friends to be in my wedding.

I think that the cards that people give are super cute, but I didn’t feel like being that crafty. I took all of them out to lunch/dinner — so I could ask them each in person. Unfortunately they all live in different cities, except two - so I had to ask them separately instead of at one time.

My brother just proposed to his girlfriend this weekend! She called me with the exciting news and ended the conversation with ” I hope you love taffeta!” There wasn’t even a question but I am sure she knew I wasn’t going to urn her down!

One actually invited herself!! (she knew she was a shoe-in) The second after him and I were engaged, she said, “You better not put me in a frilly pink puffy hoop dress cause you know I’m gonna be a bridesmaid!”

I made the task my first DIY project… and created very unique felt cards with cutout bridesmaid dresses and hangers. I just wrote a sincere note on the inside for each girl and sent it off. Everyone called and loved it and was so happy to get the cards!

one of my friends pulled me aside and asked me after her then-fiance kept asking if she had asked me yet and my best friend left me a voicemail telling/asking me that i was going to be a bridesmaid [he proposed while they were camping the night before]. either way i was honored.

but since i’m the group’s martha stewart, i’m sure i’ll come up with a fun quirky way of asking them when its my turn

I haven’t asked mine formerly yet. I’ve talked to most of them but it earlier, and my FI even told his sister that she’d be one last Easter… but I’ll probably think up something sweet and nice, esp if they’re going to put up with me, the bridezilla!

i actually got engaged in feb, but i decided not to tell them until graduation in may. in may i invited them to a lunch covering it as my graduation party. back in feb i wrote a poem for each girl about how we met, our friendship since then, and then asking them to be my moh or bm. i wrote each poem in a card and placed the cards at their place settings at the restaurant. i also had a giftbox for each girl that consisted of philosophy raspberry sorbet gel (it’s one of the colors of my wedding), a bridesmaid book, and a bouquet of paper flowers for the rehearsal. they were so shocked and could not believe that i kept it from them for so long. i was content that my surprise worked.

Nothing special. We called, told them we were engaged and asked if they would like to stand for us at our wedding.

I sent my MOH (and only bridal party member) a really adorable card . . . but, honestly, it’s always been assumed that we would be the Big Toe for each other. I was hers, and now she’s mine! She’s not a detail girl, so if I had done anything more than a card, she would still be abusing me about it . . .

To ask my matron of honor, I sent her a copy of a particulary scary picture of her from when we were in college (picture massively crimped hair, no makeup and poor lighting). Then in the attached letter, I wrote how much I wanted her to be a part of my wedding, and how I truly appreciated her friendship. And if she said no then I would put that lovely picture up on the Internet and share it with her new husband. She took my “threat” seriously and agreed to be my MOH!

I made my bridesmaids individuals cards with pictures and a sentimental message. Then I baked them cupcakes with hearts in the middle and packaged it all up.

I didn’t even realize I was “supposed” to do something special (I know, anything goes). I asked them on the phone. We were excited–I wish I had done something more cute, though.

Well, I won’t be asking mine for quite a while, but they know they’ll be in it. I think I’ll invite them for dinner or something like that, and just ask them over a bottle of wine or something. Cuz I’m classy like that! ;) HA!
