Gocco

August 23rd, 2006 @ 8:18 pm by Mrs. Bee

Since finding out what a Gocco was for the first time in the previous post, I’m now obsessed with it. I can’t believe I’d never even heard of one before! Oh the shame. Be back soon with more info…

~~~
Ok I’m back. What exactly is the Gocco?
gocco7.jpg
The “Gocco is a fully self-contained compact color printing system invented in 1977 by Noboru Hayama.” (wikipedia)
Basically it’s a cool little gizmo that enables you to create professional quality silkscreened prints at home. It uses flashbulbs similar to those used in old cameras to thermally imprint an original image onto a master screen, that you then use to make prints. You can print on paper, fabric, wood, napkins, even plexiglass!
Unfortunately Gocco’s parent company Riso stopped manufacturing the product in December of last year due to low sales in Japan. An internet campaign called Save Gocco! was started to help find a new home for the product. Although Gocco accessories are still being sold, stores have stopped carrying the Gocco system. :( However I did find several Gocco systems going for around $170 on ebay.
These are some products people have created with the Gocco:
You could create your save the dates, invitations, programs, menus, placecards and more with this nifty little machine. Make prints as simple or complicated as you like, and remember you’re not limited to just paper. Now I really want a Gocco!
This machine reminds me of something I wanted to buy when I was little when I still lived in Taiwan. I remember I was fascinated when watching the demo of that machine.. making greeting cards and stuffs. I wonder if it’s the same thing…
Now I’m so tempted to get a “Gocco”!
They look beautiful! But I wonder how complicated it is. I’m not familiar with silk screening or gocco.
OMG, you can print on the thickest, heaviest, snobbiest cardstock available! How sad that they’re no longer being sold.
Goccos are in danger! http://savegocco.com I’m totally in love with Gocco and have been for MONTHS AND MONTHS now. I haven’t been able to get one myself yet though. Unfortunately, the cheapest you may be able to get your hands on is on ebay for about $100, and even with that, you’ll have to purchase inks and etc.
Now I want to get my hands on this gizmo, unfortunely I wish the kit was cheaper. Hopefully I’ll try to talk to my husband into getting it for me.
Just to let everyone know RE: prices… they were retail $125-150 for the kit before they were discontinued. So… $170 isn’t a bad price for a newer kit.
There is one other model, but it is larger and retails for around $500-600.
I got a gocco machine last year after taking a class at Paper Source. I immediately went out and bought a machine. There weren’t very many left in LA (I got mine at Blue Rooster in Los Feliz). Gocco is awesome, but to be completely honest, it is time consuming and exhausting. Be forewarned: doing wedding invites or save the dates will truly test your patience and energy. In addition, the gocco samples pictured here are pretty advanced. The more colors you have and the closer you want the colors to be, the longer it will take.
CC–
in the end…after all of the effort you put into using the gocco..did you feel like it was worth it? what are the most exhausting aspects of using the machine? i’m planning on using it for relatively simple designs…but any tips/tricks you can share would be much appreciated!
