In today’s beehive:

  • Yukirei has three weeks left until the wedding and is looking for a site with dragonfly or bird favors!
  • Miss Sweet is looking for something to wear to a Saturday afternoon church wedding with a dinner reception afterwards that isn’t too pricey or flashy.
  • Peachy is finding conflicting “industry standards” when it comes to tipping and wants to know what guidelines “real brides” used.
  • Cindy is attending a wedding where the color scheme is lavender/purple. Is it rude for her to wear a lavender dress and match the wedding party?

what are the most common gratuity (tipping) guidelines for wedding vendors? i’m finding contradictory info on different websites… just wanted to know what “real life” brides give, not just what someone decided what the industry standard should be.

I can’t decide what to wear to a Saturday afternoon church wedding. Where’s the balance between pretty sophisticated and then looking too overdone? HELP!

Yukirei — you can mold little dragonfly chocolates or soaps, if you’re feeling crafty.

Peachy, I have the same question too. I’m also reading and hearing different opinions on tipping. For example, I read that florist is one of the vendors you don’t need to tip. But my SIL said that’s not what she heard and so she did tip. I’m also wondering whether it’s necessary to tip the Day of Coordinator. And I heard different thing on HOW MUCH to tip the photographer. Also, I read from somewhere before that if the vendor works for him/herself, since he/she doesn’t hand over the money to a boss, then you don’t need to tip. Ahh.. all these questions! Yes somebody please help!

I am going to a wedding in October where I plan to wear a lavender dress. However, the wedding colors are lavender/purple and I’m sure the bridesmaids’ dresses will be that color. Is it tacky to wear a dress that matches the bridesmaids and groomsmen?

Cindy, I think it might be considered a little rude, but if you have a nice black jacket or shrug, that should make it different enough! I think a cashmere sweater or shrug would be perfect, presuming the October wedding is somewhere cool!

peachy - if the vendor works for themselves, a tip is not necessary, although for excellent service it is recommended. If the people working with you work for someone else, you should tip them. Exceptions are made for people who are normally tipped anyway, such as hairdressers who run their own businesses. :)

Yukerei- If you have an image of a dragonfly or bird that you like, you can have it imprinted on just about anything. We used Gary Austin Advertising for our favors. He was fast and responsive. Good luck.

I have a question for the hive: What kind of group rates have people found at Manhattan hotels? We’re getting married next summer and we need between 45 and 60 rooms. We’ve been looking downtown ‘cos that’s where we’re getting married plus with all the business clientele down there their rates are actually LOWER on the weekends. However we still haven’t found any group rates under $200 a night. Does that seem right?

Hello ladies! Although I am not an engaged bride-to-be (just yet), I have a co-worker that is in desperate need of some advice. “A” and I have been visiting weddingbee every second of everyday for the last couple of months (literally!). WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE SITE, btw. In any case, she’s been engaged for 2 months now and has set her wedding date for July 28th, 2007. We’re located in So. Cali. and she would like any and all advice you could offer for a So. Cal. venue that is relatively affordable ($3000-$4000?) where she can have an outdoor wedding/reception for approximately 150-160 guests. I know most of the busy bees are location on the East coast, but we were hoping that some of your readers could lend a hand. (*ahem* She’s been so stressed that it would be SUPER beneficial to my sanity that she find one ASAP.) =( Please help!

Monkee: I got married at the Sherman Library & Gardens in Corona del Mar. It is a gem of a spot and I couldn’t have been happier. Completely private and intimate. Highly recommended. Other outdoor venues: Long Beach Museum of Art and Los Angeles River Center. There are also plenty of hotels where you can have an outdoor ceremony and then bring the reception into a ballroom– e.g. Hyatt Regency Newporter, Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach, Surf & Sand Resort, Laguna Cliffs Marriott.

Monkee: My sis is getting married at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The Bali Hai is nice in San Diego as is Paradise Point. Not sure where in SoCal she was looking to have it but I can recommend other places in SD if she is having it this far south :) Happy planning!

Dear “e”

Try Club Quarters. Mostly corporate clientele, but totally renovated and great rates. You need some sort of affiliation to get in - corporation, alumni association, etc. Talk to the people there and maybe you match up.

Try the local Los Angeles Knot boards. Someone has already compiled a very detailed list of possible sites. I’m getting married at a private estate in Silver Lake area of Los Angeles called the Paramour. I believe their rental cost is within your friend’s budget. Email me and I will send you some photos (they’re just okay, but will give you a sense of the place). qualifiedmaybe@yahoo.com
