Black on Black on Black?

August 24th, 2006 @ 1:07 pm by Mrs. Butterfly

How do you get your groom to stand out from the crowd? Dress the groomsmen in darker, more subtle colors so that the groom “pops” out from the rest.

My groom will be wearing a two button, notch lapel, black tuxedo with a wing-tip collar shirt, champagne colored vest and tie. He will also have a boutenniere made of a dark orange calla lily.

(Yes, I am re-posting old photos. I have no shame.)

The groomsmen will be essentially wearing the same thing, but with a black vest and a black tie. We were originally going to have the groomsmen wear black vests and champagne colored ties, but Mr. Butterfly wanted to stand out a little more than that. So, we agreed on black ties for everyone.

At first I thought that a black tux with black vest and black tie would be a little dark. But at our friend’s wedding a few months back, Mr. Butterfly wore all black as the Best Man, and I thought he looked fantastic!

The only difference from the picture is that my bridal party won’t be wearing bowties. With a regular black tie, I was concerned that the groomsmen would give off a slight “funeral” vibe. So last week, we went shopping for ties at Macy’s and found these.

City of London Neckties - Solid Tonal Black Striped Bond Street Silk Tie

My favorite part of City of London ties is the back. The tips are so colorful!

I know its just a small detail, but I love the fact that the black ties are not solid black. I think it will make the difference between “dark” and “modern.”

I like the dimension in the tie–will the photos pick up on it?

Jeff wants to look different from his groomsman (just having one) and the dads, so his groomsman and the dads are matching–champagne vests and black ties, and Jeff and the ring bearer are matching–blue vests and ties. At least, I think that’s what we like…it changes daily, you know :)

Hi,

My fiance and I are having trouble looking for affordable vests and dress shirts. Where can we look? We’ve tried Century 21 and they do have a couple but nothing seems right… Your feedback is much appreciated!

Thanks,
Kathlynn

Also, we’re thinking of getting him a champagne colored vest as well. Miss Butterfly, where did you get Mr. Butterfly’s? It looks great!

My husband wanted to stand out also for our wedding from all the groomsmen. They were wearing red ties and vests, and my husband was also wearing a red tie but a black vest. He wanted to wear a black shirt instead of the traditional white, but his parents and my mom nixed the idea, said it didn’t fit the part. But I thought he would have looked absolutely amazing if he wore the black shirt, he should’ve just kept to his guns. Oh well, too late.

Check out Rothman’s at the north end of Union square. (I think that’s its name)

I wanted my FI to have a lighter tie so I ordered extra material from my gown (in champagne) and Tiecrafters (www.tiecrafters.com) custom made him a tie from the fabric of my gown - only $60. It turned out great. He is wearing it with a black vest. The rest of the guys are wearing black ties and black vests!

I had the exact same black tie from City of London. I used to cater and we had to wear black ties. I actually got mines at Marshals for $10.. I know they charge something $40 at Macy’s for them. Maybe check out some discounted locations first?
