About Mrs. Lily

Boobies, Boobies, Boobies

August 24th, 2006 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Lily

Like I said yesterday, I am just back from AZ and basically none of my pics are uploaded yet. So instead of showing ya’ll some pretty pics, I thought I’d talk about something we all have: boobs!

If any of you read my overly long and slightly sappy post from yesterday, you’ll know that I’m wearing my Mom’s wedding dress and a lovely seamstress is changing it around for me. It’s perfect… except in the bust area where I am in dire need of a good bra! It’s an age old problem: girl has boobs, girl wants boobs to fill out dress, girl also wants boobs to be pushed up, girl needs strapless AND backless.

Having had boobs since I was a young teenager, I can deal with most of the above requirements, but strapless and backless is a killer. My post on bridesmaid dresses sparked a mini-controversy on what type of strapless bra works for different women and different dresses. This is obviously an imprecise science.

A few of you ladies suggested the NuBra, which is basically a silicone bra you stick to your body. Mrs. Bee blogged about this bra and it works great for her. Others had mixed reactions saying it was especially problematic for the more well-endowed woman. In case you’re wondering what this contraption looks like, it’s:

I tried this puppy on and I am disappointed to say that I fall in the thumbs down camp. My boobies are modest so I thought it might work, but it gave me a weird ridge at the top and not enough lift. For those on the thumbs up side of the fence, was I doing something wrong???

Since the NuBra seems out, I’m now on the hunt for a strapless, backless bra. Winning the lottery seems easier. Need proof? Danae at knickersblog previously wrote into Weddingbee stating:

…to date, I’ve not found any backless, strapless bras available. I’m sure there’s a few out there somewhere, but i think they’re so rare because they just don’t provide the right support (it makes sense that the backless bit would accidentally pull down the strapless bit).

This leads me to the question I have for all of you…

With your wedding dress, are you:

Miss Lily, I haven’t picked out my dress yet, but I’m almost sure I’m going to need a dress with straps, since I’m five feet tall and am about a 36D- and even normal bras sometimes don’t work for me! Halters hurt my neck, strapless make me panic about having to hitch it up. I think I’m going to go for a corset, to lace those puppies down and up!

I wouldn’t recommend the nubra under a wedding dress - I’d just feel more comfortable with more support. I do wear the featherlite nubra all the time under my strapless, low back dresses but I must admit it verges on being a little too small because I’m not particularly small in the boobie department either. ;)

I wore the bridal bustier from le mystere which was quite comfortable. How low is the back of your dress? I’ve seen backless strapless bras that have sticky sides but i don’t know if those would be significantly more support that the nubra. You’d probably have better luck (and more support with a bra/bustier with a plunging back?

I had bra cups sewn into my dress. — It was great! They gave support and were comfy. :)

VS has strapless backless bras. They worked well for me (except for the ow! part where you lift the tape off at the end of the night).

Yeah, I agree that a bridal bustier would probably be your best bet (depending on how low your dress goes in the back.) My friend wore a very complicated contraption at her wedding which seemed to do the job nicely and with a veeery low back.

Not sure what I’m doing yet…I think I could probably wear a regular strapless bra with my dress but I don’t want it peeking out! Kleinfeld said they would “attach cups” or some other odd phrase to my dress for me, but as it won’t be delivered for another MANY MANY MONTHS, I didn’t even bother asking what that meant, or if it’s meant to be in lieu of an actual bra?

I love all the suggestions and hearing about what other people are using! I think I want a really low bustier type thing or something that’s a one piece down to a boy-short type look (less lines that way!)… still not sure how to find this! I’m gonna check out bratenders (VS was a no go). Also, y seamstress said she could put in cups, but that a bra is better because it gives you more lift…

XOXO Miss Lily

I have the nubra. I have to admit that it does feel nice at first….but throughout the night…when we were dancing and it got hot…i started to sweat (gross i know). Little beads of perspiration formed in the bra and the bra started to lose it’s “stickyness”. I was trying to stick them back on but it was too late. NuBra + sweat = trouble. It only works for a few hours. Not a long night.

I’m wearing a strapless low plunge bra recommended by the place where I got my dress:

Have you made sure you looked into VS, Maiden Form, and Federicks (sp?) of Hollywood?

Why don’t you have something sewn into the dress for support?

Depending on how low the back of the dress is, you could try a corset/bustier? with a low V back? That’s what I wore when i was a bridesmaid.

And I think having something sewn into the dress for support is an even better idea.

hey! there’s this brilliant boob lifter called “liftits”. it’s sole purpose is to lift the boobs, so the only downside is if your boobs are on the smaller side, it doesn’t give them extra cushion. and they last all day! you don’t ever have to discreetly fix them as you so often have to with the nubra. .

i got some of these while in england and they work wonders! i’m not sure if any stores in the states sell these, but you can get them online at asos.com.

there’s a link to a page with a video showing how liftits work. http://www.usefulchickstuff.co.uk/uk/Liftits.htm

I got a great strapless and backless boustier from BraTenders (near Times Square). It was kind of expensive (over $100) but it worked perfectly with my frame and my dress. The staff at BraTenders is also super helpful and nice in getting you exactly what you want; I actually found out about the store from a previous weddingbee post!
