Mrs. Bee,
Like much of the country, I was just waking up yesterday as the breaking news of the plane crash slowly unfolded. As a Lexingtonian, the news had me heartsick and glued to the television for a large part of the day. While I didn’t know anyone on Flight 5191, I have friends who did, and I couldn’t help feeling that it could have been any one of us. If you fly out of Lexington, you normally lay over in Atlanta. One of my friends had just taken that flight a week ago.
Then came the story that a couple on board the plane were on route to their honeymoon. I hadn’t cried up until this point, but upon hearing that news, I lost it. That’s when I really thought: It could have been me . Another couple was on their way to a destination wedding in St. Lucia; they were supposed to get married on Tuesday. This tragedy has hit home with me to a greater extent than September 11 and Hurricane Katrina ever did. I could have been that bride. Literally.
The whole point of this e-mail is to let you (and weddingbee readers) know how you can help the victims’ families. United Way has set up the 5191 Care Fund. More info can be found here.
I will do what I can to help financially, but out of this horrible accident, I will also take away the lesson to hold onto love. One hundred years from now, will it really matter what china pattern you have?
