Open Question: Inviting the Minister

August 29th, 2006 @ 8:25 am by Mrs. Bee

Is it required to invite the minister to the rehearsal dinner and/or reception dinner? Since I’m having a destination wedding in Hawaii, I probably won’t meet him until the day of my wedding.

Thanks,
ocicats

I don’t think it’s required for a destination wedding, at all, nor do I think that the minister would expect it. However, if you are having him say a prayer at the reception, I think it would be rude not to invite him to eat.

If that is not the case, though, I would assume that since he doesn’t know you or your family, he would probably prefer to do his job and go home. :)

all i know is that etiquette books dictate you invite the officiant in any event. if he/she doesn’t know you or the family, they probably will politely decline. but if it’s a destination wedding and you’ll never see him again, i guess it doesn’t make much of a difference.

i just casually mentioned it to my officiant. just by saying “of course we will invite you to stay for dinner…” and he politely declined. then i offered to have him stay for the tea ceremony if he wanted.

We’re also having a dw and won’t be meeting our officiant until the rehearsal the day before. We will not be formally inviting our officiant to our reception.

If we happen to really hit it off, we’ll just verbally invite him to stay. Or if he decides to hang arround, we wouldn’t be offended. Our wedding is pretty laid back, so we’ll play it by ear.

Thanks everyone. I was looking through some Hawaii Knotties bios and it seemed like most of them invited the minister to the rehearsal dinner and/or reception…but I thought it was kind of weird to invite someone you never met before.

Some of the Hawaii Knotties have great ideas that can be incorporated into anyones wedding not just DW. Check it out: http://www.theknot.com/co_profileview.htm?profilename=HawaiiBrides

BTW, Miss Ant, I love your invites and love, love your Le Spose Di Gio dress. I wish I could afford their dresses.
