i’ve had my ring for a few months now and it doesn’t look like it needs cleaning.. how frequent should you be cleaning it?

Miss Violet–since the build-up can be gradual you often won’t notice that a ring is dirty, then once you get it cleaned it’s like…whoa!

Most experts recomment cleaning no more frequently than once a week–more often than that can damage the integrity of the setting.

Since it’s been a few months, I’d recommend getting your ring professionally cleaned (most jewelry stores perform free cleaning and inspection) and then cleaning it yourself in the future for maintenance–about twice a month, more often if you often get your ring dirty. If your ring is particularly dirty then it’s a good idea to just have the jeweler clean it rather than trying to do so yourself–I’ve seen several cases where the integrity of a setting was compromised and the only thing holding the stone in was the built-up crud and dirt (skin cells, soap, lotion, etc) that was down in the setting.

I get my ring cleaned and inspected professionally twice a year, and my jeweler keeps a record of when I have it done (I get it cleaned at the store Jeff bought it from).

If you’ve bought insurance on your ring, many places require periodic inspection and maintenance to keep the insurance valid. Every six months or every year is common; check your insurance information to see if this is necessary, but I recommend it even if it’s not required.

I’ve been looking for a steam cleaner suitable for home use and came across this recently: http://jeweljet.com/

Not sure if it is any good though. Has anyone tried it?

I read somewhere that it should be cleaned 2 parts water to 1 part ammonia. I clean my other jewelry like that, but I’m hesistant to just drop my ring in a cup. I’ll wait until I go to a jewelry store to have it steames.

The company I work for sells ultrasonic jewelry cleaners. I actually just used it 2 days ago to clean my ring and it worked great! I didn’t realize how dirty my ring was. I’ve only had it for 4 months. But cleaning it really brought the bling out. It doesn’t use any chemicals. All you need is water. Actually, I believe for ultrasonic jewelry cleaners, it’s not absolutely necessary to use a cleaning solution. The machine uses energy waves to create tiny tiny bubbles that get into all the little nooks and crannies to flush out dirt and grime. You can add a drop of dishwashing detergent if it’s super dirty, but normally, just water is fine. Run the machine a few times and it’ll come out looking brand spankin new! Though it’s unlikely that the setting will become loose from the cleaning, there is still that possibility for the cleaner to loosen the stones. So it’s best that you get your ring inspected by a professional once or twice a year.

my jeweler said to make a paste using water and baking soda. using a soft toothbruth lightly brush the ring with the paste. make sure not to leave the paste on longer than a minute. rinse and once dry then polish with a jewelry polishing cloth.

AP, I have a jewel jet ( http://www.jeweljet.com ). I love it. It is the same machine our professional jeweler uses. The reason I use this machine rather than an ultrasonic one is because my setting is a pave setting and I was informed by more than a few people in the industry that ultrasonic can shake the little stones loose eventually. Jewel jet is awesome. I’d highly recommend it.

I clean my ring religiously. sometimes I find myself cleaning it a couple times a day. can we say obsessed? but I love how it sparkles.

my newly found technique:

rubbing alcohol.

I accidently sprayed some on my ring while cleaning at work. just as I was about to freak out, I realized how much more the ring sparkled. I even bought a purse sized perfume atomizer to fill it with rubbing alcohol. LOL

also, little bit of dishwashing soap and really soft toothbrush works wonders too.
