Open Question: Menswear

August 30th, 2006 @ 9:34 am by Mrs. Bee

Hello. I had decided early in the planning process that the men in the wedding party will not wear ties. I have never in my life seen my dad in a tie, and my fiance will wear one only if he has to. I don’t think they should be uncomfortable at our wedding, but I still want the guys to look stylish. However, every ad or article on menswear assumes that ties will be worn, even for casual weddings. Are there particular shirt or jacket styles that look good without ties that I can be looking for? I’m hoping that someone will have advice, pictures, ideas, etc; as I have never seen this issue addressed in magazines or on websites. Thanks.

Maggie

Hi Maggie,

Even if they don’t wear ties, they should still wear something collared.

You can check out the destination weddings message board on the knot and browse those brides’ bios for inspiration on stylish, casual menswear.

Mr Ant won’t be wearing a tie either. He’ll be sporting a linen suit that I happen to think he looks dashing in.

Good luck!

i was going to say… look at destination weddings / beach weddings… a lot of times the men will wear khaki color suits with white shirts (no ties)… i think it looks GREAT & stylish @ the same time :)

My Fi isn’t wearing a tie at our Sunday. He is a wear a Mandarin Collar Tuxedo Shirt with a nice button at the top. He says its much more comfortable.

Maggie - I would look at J. Crew catalogs, actually. They always have plenty of pictures of men looking wedding-ready without ties! :)
