Diamonds or TVs?

I saw this article on MSN linked on Pricescope and was curious what you guys thought! The conclusion of a new study, commissioned by Oxygen, found that most women would choose new technology devices over diamonds or shoes.

Assuming the cost is the same... which would you choose?

Diamonds (64%)
Plasma TV (36%)

I’m a little confused by the article though, since it seems to be discussing two fairly unrelated issues as far as I’m concerned. The first is whether women are as technologically savvy as men (pretty much!!), and the second is a series of choices between tech purchases or luxury items. Without a comparison of whether men would prefer a digital video camera or a fishing vacation (for example) to go alongside the stereotypically “female” ideal gifts, the study seems a bit pointless to me. Even the “comfort with technology” portion of the survey doesn’t have male numbers to compare it to! I just wonder how much this has to do with gender differences and how much it has to do with a basic practical vs. luxury conflict within a given person. The clear implication (to me at least) of the article is that men are more practical and women want more frivolous things - but they don’t give us anything to back that up!

That said, I’d totally take the diamonds.

What do you think of the article? How much truth do you think the practical men vs. frivolous women stereotype has behind it?

I would totally get diamonds because they rarely go down in value, over time, a diamond is a better investment. And they’re pretty!

Agree with Amber - in the long run, a diamond will be worth more, especially today when technology stuff gets changed/upgrade SO quickly.

But a plasma tv (or other awesome flat-screen HD TV) would be SO nice in our apt right now. And I already got my diamond… so tomorrow: tv please.

for the poll, i voted for the plasma tv. sure I’m a gadget geek and i’m in the IT industry and all, but I sure love my diamonds as well! and when u think about it.. if a diamond and a plasma tv cost the SAME, then that’s kinda a sh*tty diamond! haha umm yeah.

oh.. and i bought the FI an hd plasma and an hd dlp in exchange for my ring I still got the better deal tho cuz I get to enjoy the tvs AND my ring.

it’s a real toss up, maybe I’ll take the money. My fiance asked his friends that question too. he had to use his student loan to buy my e-ring, very sweet. But I got him his 42″ this january.

im a total gadget geek and i would NEVER take a plasma tv. in 5 years, it’s going to be half the price. the same isn’t true of diamonds…

I wouldn’t pick diamonds because of the blood diamonds - plus they’re overhyped, I’d prefer a colored gem anyhow!
