About Mrs. Snail

Not-So-Funny

September 3rd, 2006 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Snail

If all the weddingbees were to take a poll as to who would have the oddest-to-be last name, I would be the winner by FAR.

My soon-to-be last name is Ho. That’s right. H-O. My fiance’s Korean and it should’ve been spelled H-o-h, but the Immigration Department must’ve been feeling funny that day because they left off the last “h” on their documents.

Some of my co-workers seem to get a kick out of my soon-to-be new name, because my name is Jennifer. So I’ve been given a new nickname - J.Ho. It gets crazier. My Korean name is Hye Sun (Hye is pronounced like “heh”). When I get random phone calls with people trying to pronounce my Korean name I get “Hi” or “Hey.” Now try adding Ho to either one. *sigh* I’m going to have to go change my legal first name to Jennifer. I’d rather be called J. Ho than Hi Ho or Hey Ho. I mostly go by my American name anyways.

When my fiance and I were still in the pre-engagement stages and were talking of marriage, his last name was the one thing that got to me. I so badly wanted him to change his last name’s vowel to “u” or add the extra “h” to the end like it was originally supposed to be.

Now, it’s different. At a certain point, I began to realize how selfish I was being by making a fuss over how his last name was spelled, and how it was very possible that I was unintentionally insulting his family too. It doesn’t matter to me anymore. I’ve come to accept it and even laugh at the “Ho” jokes. I’m just happy to have the opportunity for us to grow old together.

sorry i couldn’t stop myself from laughing out loud. i had an ex with the last name that sounded like “loo-ee” and then my name is holly, so my lovely siblings would call me “holleluia” whenever we went to church.

i really love your korean name. being a korean who’s trying to establish some connection to her heritage as an adult, i think it’d be kind of a shame to legally remove your korean name…maybe you could legally go by jennifer hye sun. but utimately it’s your decision. just don’t based tooo much on what other people will think =)

that’s funny. I went to school with a Jen Ho. I’m sure some guys teased her good-naturedly about it, but I never thought anything of it.

i have a coworker whose last name is edgar. he married a chinese vietnamese girl whose last name is Ho but she’s so proud of her heritage, she decided to keep Ho instead of changing it to Edgar. does that make u feel better? we asian people have all these “interesting” last names…doesnt that just make our lives more interesting? :]

if it helps any, not that it probably will, but when i was learning korean [which didn't take...i'm assuming it was a fluke so i'm gonna try again] and found out my mom’s mother’s last name was moon, i started giggling since that’s the word for door. can you believe she was not amused?

My friend was dating a girl named Mia and his last name was Ho. When they ended, I said it was for the better because the name wouldn’t worked out anyways. At least he got a good laugh out of it.

My friend married a great guy who is Indian (as in, his parents are from India) and her last name is now “Nag”. Just part of love I guess.

It’s a bit of a process, but you could look to change your hsuband’s name to the correct spelling. That’s what my FI is doing with his last name, since American immigration authorities seem to have misspelled quite a few names.

I feel you Miss Snail. My future last name will be Ahn. Ahn in Korean translates to “no” or “not” in English. My name is YooRi which means “glass” in english. That makes my new name “No/Not Glass”. Yes…i am therefore PLASTIC. It’s an inside “korean joke” i have with my friends and family to get a laugh from. You summed it up well though. I can’t wait to be plastic! =)

hey i feel you completely. My FI’s last name is also “Ho” but we joke around about it all of the time. He’s an absolutely wonderful FI and future husband, I really don’t mind anymore that his name can be used in a bad way. If anything its totally unique and am so very proud to take his name - it really is an honor to me. We joke around that if we were to have any children we’d name him/her the following names.

“50 cent”
” Penny”
“Mai”

What’s even more hilarious is that my middle name is “Dang” so it would be “Dang Ho”. Lovely so lovely i say. =)

If it makes you feel any better, I always wanted to hyphenate my last name since I wanted to keep some part of my last name and still take on my fiance’s last name. However, my last name is “Short” and my fiancee’s last name (unfortunately) is “Man” but Short-Man really isn’t an attractive option so now I’m trying to figure out if I should keep my own last name or take his. Mrs. Man just doesn’t sound right either. *sigh*

My mother’s last name is Ho and I never once thought of it in a negative light. If you consider a name in its cultural context rather than something prescribed by popular culture, it may help : )

actually…my last name is the same, but immigration officials/my dad somehow made it into “hoe.” i’ve met a few others, but they all spell it the properly romanized “huh” or “hur.” so…anyway, i was teased a lot growing up, but have definitely learned to laugh it off and even love it now. i’m even sad about taking my fiance’s last name soon, but i’ll probably keep it as my middle name.

some of my college friends called me d.hoe, and it’s a nickname i ended up embracing fully. my college roomie’s first name is horim (a rare korean girl or boy’s name), so we were collectively known as “the hoes.” :)
