About Mrs. Poppy

Florist

September 5th, 2006 @ 3:36 pm by Mrs. Poppy

There is this really cute, small floral shop a block or so from where we live. Mr. Poppy and I thought it would be nice to stop in and get quotes on possible flowers.

Let me just say it was a horrible experience. First she looked at us like… “You’re getting married???” Although she did mention that we looked young but still!!! Then when I asked about bouquets and boutonnieres, she couldn’t tell me how many flowers it would take to make a bouquet. She also couldn’t tell me how big the bouquet would be. She stated: $150 for the bride’s bouquet and about $100 per bridesmaid.

So I asked again: “About how big would our bouquets be? How many flowers are in a bouquet?”

She looked at me like I was crazy.

Then she asked why I didn’t ask about centerpieces. I explained to her that I’m doing them myself. She looked at me like I was crazy again. She told me that I probably couldn’t do it myself. At this point I looked at her like she was crazy. Then she proceeded to be very rude, so we said “thanks” and left.

Has anyone else had experiences like this before? I’ve been to other florists and they never treated me this way. They answered my questions to the best of their ability. Although I did have one other florist treat me this way because she thought I was too young to get married. When I told her I was 27, she got embarrassed and said she thought I was 18.

It shouldn’t matter if they think I look 18 or not, I am a customer no? So this makes me want to do my own flowers for the wedding EVEN MORE! Hmmmph.

oh my goodness!! soo rude!! i have no idea why you would run a business like that? you better have some stellar ass skills to be treating your potential clients that way. i think you should write her a letter letting her know how offended and unwelcomed you felt. if she still doesn’t care, move on to the next florist. honestly, if she is THIS unprofessional with her service, imagine how unprofessional she will act the rest of the LONG journey, and even the day of. don’t let her ruin it!!

OMG Miss Poppy~ I had the EXACT same experience a couple of weeks ago. I prefaced the florist by saying that I’m a very unconventional bride, and don’t really know the exact flowers I wanted… just the color scheme. she looked at me like I was crazy. She asked me what I wanted for the bridesmaids… and I said that I wanted roses for them, and I asked how many will come in it… and she looked at me like I was psycho. But the icing on the cake was when she asked me about my centerpieces…and when I told her I was doing those myself… she rolled her eyes and then completed the consultation.

My fiancee was with… and he told me that we didn’t have to use her. I’m embarrassed to say, she made me shed a tear… she made me feel like such an inadequate bride!!!

Not to make excuses, but if you just walked in it can be kind of flustering. I worked for a florist, albeit briefly, and people would walk in wanting a boutonniere or a bouquet and it was a bit difficult…although I understand you didn’t want the flowers RIGHT THEN. As well, it can be hard to predict availabilty, size and pricing of flowers without taking the time to think, look and compare.

On the other hand, her behavior was uncalled for. I get a lot of ‘you look so young’ comments all the time, and I find it to be rude and insulting (although I hope I keep my youthful looks for a long time!). Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!!

Oh, Miss Poppy! I feel for you. I also look particularly young for my age… It’s the youthful asian look. When I dealt with local vendors, many of them didn’t take me seriously. If it really bothers you, I would suggest bringing your mother or an older looking friend along with you for important vendor visits!

kanipark - thanks for the advice :)

cacee - i totally agree ha, that lady was so crazy and a pure jerk. but what can i say? da wells.

emmy - oh you poor thing, *HUGS* i almost did as well - shed a tear that is. i go into a florist shop because i’ve never gotten married before or had to order bouquets. so that’s why i ask simple questions … i don’t want to know exactly how many flowers. i just want to know about so i know how big or small the bouquet would be. *sigh* but you hang in there cuz she’s not worth it :) there is a florist out there who will help you!

if any of you girls are on AIM let me know i’m on now and then. my sn: poppywedding

marscloveme - aw i hear ya. the thing is i did talk to her about flowers and she said she couldn’t even give me a idea of what size it would be. we talked about different kinds of flowers and i just wanted to know if it would be a smaller bouquet or a medium bouquet. (just something….) i guess that’s why i was so frustrated, including her being rude. she kept telling me that i should go for the higher priced bouquets that were $300 a piece… and i kept telling her that i can’t commit to anything unless she gives me about what size or at least a picture of something. but she couldn’t and wouldn’t even give me a idea of what i would be paying for. *bleh* but i understand that it’s hard for florists out there and i didn’t mean all florsits are rude.. just that one :) the others i have been to have been wonderufl.

miss ant - i wish i had my mom here but she lives far away :( and all my friends are blessed because they look even younger than me :)

My best friend’s florist was simliar.. not in terms of being rude (she was a pretty nice lady), but in terms of she couldn’t say exactly (or even just a approx.) how many flowers were going to be in the bouquets. I was w/my best friend on the appointment (we didn’t just walk in. It was an actual scheduled consultation), and instead of giving us specific numbers for bride and BM bouquets, the florist just pointed to pictures of her past work and said “oh, if this is the size you want, then I’ll just do whatever that will make up that size”. I thought it was very odd and unprofessional. The flowers turned out to be fine for the wedding, but I personally would not want to work w/someone who can’t give me even a rough idea of details like that. What if she screws me over by giving me much smaller bouquets and she excuses herself by just saying no numbers were specified in the contract?

J - it does scare me a little that i wouldn’t even know the size… or approx size. but i’m so glad to hear that it turned out well with your friend :) that’s always encouraging. sadly the lady didn’t even have pictures to show me. other places at least showed me pictures of what their price would include. :)

well… i definitely think that it was inappropriate for her to belittle you like that. DEFINITELY find a different florist who will be more helpful because flowers are definitely the icing on the cake for a wedding, and sooooo important.

that said, the thing is i can kind of understand why she wasn’t able to tell you the number of flowers that would go in the bouquets. my mom’s a florist, and i’ve helped her in literally hundreds of weddings, so i understand where the florist is coming from. you don’t know what the flowers will look like from the wholesaler until literally days before the wedding, so because you don’t know the size of the flowers, you don’t know how many would be needed to fill an entire bouquet. the florist should’ve been able to guesstimate that and maybe show you pictures of bouquets she’s done to give you an idea of how it would turn out… but clearly she didn’t have either people skills or any proper marketing knowledge.

peachy - :) thank you, i know that it’s hard for florists totally. my mom was a florist at one point but yeah i was just sad she couldn’t even show me a picture of estimate how big it would be overall. but yeah i know florists have it hard :) i’m sorry i was venting and you are right: she was so unprofessional.

aim - yes you are correct!!! :) and i will ;)
