Reader Buzz: Opposites Attract

September 8th, 2006 @ 12:47 pm by Mrs. Bee

I was thinking about the old adage “opposites attract,” and wondered if it were true for me and Mr. Bee. We’re opposite in many ways, but similar in many ways as well. The biggest difference between us is that he’s an optimist and I’m a Debbie Downer aka a pessimist. But we’re also both introverts, have strong family values, and share a passion for blogging. Are we more opposite than similar? Hmmm…probably. The best way to describe it is that Mr. Bee is a good balance for me. :)

Do you think opposites attract? Are you and your partner opposites?

i would say the hubbs & i are definitely different in our own ways yet very similar… i’m an optimist, he’s a pessimist in lots of way… i’m an extrovert & i would say he’s more an introvert…
we are both the oldest, thinking we’re always the boss, we both have stong family values & share our love for movies :)

there’s a lot more… but i’ll stop here :)

We are similar in almost everyway, except for me being super emotional (he says I’m “fragile”) and he is really strong, and level-headed. It works out perfectly.

similar likes and dislikes, completely different personalities… i dont know about opposites attracting, but in our case its the similarities that first attracted us to each other and the (extremely polar opposite) differences that help balance each other out day to day…

Me and Mr. G are very similar. To quote Miss janet Jackson about her man “We are so similar, sometimes i look at him and think I’m looking in the mirror” … or something to that extent. I’ve dated guys with much more “opposites attract” energy… clearly, that did not work for me in the long run. I think part of it has to do with what type of energy gets your heart pumping. Some people love a good fight and others don’t. Some people can disagree respectfully and others can’t… I don’t think there is a steadfast rule for all people… as in just about everything.

A & I are quite similar. We have (mostly) the same taste in music, and we have the same goals in life…we believe in the same things, and are both mostly non-religious. Our personalities are VERY alike, except that I’m very outgoing, where as he is shy. We’ve been together about 2 years now, and we are as strong as ever.

my bf and i are complete opposites! i’m very outspoken and he’s so shy and introverted its painful to talk to him (if you didn’t really know him that is)…although there are some similiarities but i would say the differences outweigh the similarities by far.

I like the way my FIL put it: “Opposites attract, but similarities keep you together.” :)

i’m with jennifer. while me and the bf are opposites [i'm much more extroverted and social and super into sports than he is ] but it was how shockingly similiar we thought that intiatied our relationship.

i guess it doesn’t hurt that we also look oddly similiar. but you know what they say, that’s a sign we’re meant to be!

When it comes to minor things like interest, hobby, and the way I dress *sigh* etc… he’s the opposite, but when it comes to family values, morals… things like that we’re very similar. As long as we agree on major issues, I like the balance in us. To answer your question, I wouldn’t say opposite attracts, maybe “balance” attracts?

Jeff and I are soooo much alike–we joke that we have one brain that hovers between us! He always knows what I mean when I make nonsensical rants, and I’m good at getting into his mind and understanding his feelings even when he doesn’t want to talk about them. We had very similar upbringings, intelligence (Our IQs are 1 point apart, and we got the same ACT score!), even the same sense of humor and religious and political stances! However, in the ways that we differ we play off each other well. I’m definitely the more flighty, clumsy one, and he’s always there to catch me when I trip (literally) and remind me when I have meetings or such.

i think opposites attract as long as they are alike when it comes to the “bigger, more important” issues.

what attracts? opposites in character, similarities in interests. like you know how they say an impatient person needs a patient spouse; compatable opposites. otherwise opposties just annoy.

My fiance and I are similar in many ways. But also a bit *opposite* in some. He’s much more efficient, I’m a “turtle”. He’s GREAT w/finance, I’m not anywhere close. But like what my mama always said, being the same is not *always* a good thing. For example, if you’re both irresponsible with $$ then you’re in trouble because very likely you have no reason to change. It’s actually good to be a bit the opposite because you learn from each other’s areas of strength and help each other improve on the flaws. That is so true..we sure have learn a lot from each other and become better in quite a few ways ever since we met. We complement each other very well and interestingly that a lot is due to our “differences”. Does that make sense? :-D

For me physically speaking yes, opposite attract. I find blond man with blue eyes very appealing, the good looking ones, of course. That’s probably because they look so different from me (I’m Asian). In a way they are “exotic” to me. I don’t think personalities matters as much as interest when people think similarities attract. Interest/hobby wise, I’d definitely say ‘birds of a feather flock together’. Generally, friends share common interest. Otherwise, what is the point of hanging out? Also, you’ll get one another. Now personally, my fiance is neither blond nor shares any of my interest. So I guess I have no point. :) I guess the above is how I feel ideally about things but fate works in mysterious ways.
