Hanging Votives

September 10th, 2006 @ 5:47 pm by Mrs. Lily

I love the look of candles and think hanging votives are so airy and sweet. Isn’t this gorgeous!?:

I tell you though, these suckers are hard to find! This is what I’ve come up with so far:

From Jamali Gardens, these are $3.50:

This votive (from Flowers and Supplies) is out of stock until the end of September, but is closer to what I want and is only $2.35:

The search continues!

That’s what I want to do for my wedding too!

And look what I found for you!

A bit pricy-er… maybe wait till they go on sale?

A friend had these at her wedding recently and I believe the florist already had them for her use, so that might be true for your florist.

One thing to keep in mind, make sure they’re not hanging in a place where someone might hit them as they walk past. At my friend’s wedding a groomsman brushed past them and wax spilled down the back of his tux.

Oooh. I luv the ones from illuminations– thanks J and Mrs. Ladybug. Hopefully they’ll go on sale, but I might buy a few anyway just to hang in the trees!

Do you think you can make them? Like buy regular votive holders, get some chicken wire or something?

Actually, I know they can be made because I saw a knottie (aurajoon) do an AMAZING job. All my DIY projects will have to be non-glass items though so I don’t have to worry about things breaking on the way to Arizona… :-)

There is a way to tie ribbon or twist wire to make sure its secure. Hmmmm. Can’t think of it at the moment. But it’s WAY cheaper to do it DIY. Hmmmm. I’ll be back ladies.

When doing this kind of thing, you need a lot of candles. That can mean way too much work fiddling with wire. The easiest and most versatile way to hang votives from the branches is to buy knee-high sheer toe hosiery in white, and slip the glass votive into the toe. Trim the top length to hang at the right height and slit from the top down the length of the hose so that the candle doesn’t heat up the nylon too much. Then tie or wire it to the branch. Add embellishments like crystal beads hanging from the nylone or tie a ribbon around. There’s no limit the ideas for embellishments — just don’t use hot glue near the top, it might release. If you’re really on a budget, you can buy pantyhose and cut several tubes from each pair and tie securely at the bottom underneath the glass. You might also find fishnet stockings. You can use mis-matched votive glasses as long as they’re about the same size and no one would notice. I picked up several small drinking glasses from the thrift shop. They’re very narrow and taller and the candle is sitting deeper into the glass so that the hose doesn’t have to be slit all the way down.

There are a few nice ones listed on 100candles.com. Found in the candle holders section.

Martha Stewart shows a way to DIY with wire that doesn’t seem too difficult. The directions are under the fourth of july votive craft.

I just purchased some hanging votive holders from this store. They are a good price, about $2 each. They also have the same votive holder as shown on this page, the last one clear with the wire - it is not shown on their website. If you are in the San Diego area it is worth the visit =) Good luck!

I found them for $1.99 at this website. They look like normal votives, but they have wholes on the side to tie a ribbon or wire to. http://www.flowersandsupplies.com/Cylinder-Hanging-Votive-Holder_p_5-974.html
