About Mrs. Ant

Five Years Ago

September 11th, 2006 @ 1:26 pm by Mrs. Ant

Five years ago, on 9/11, I suffered through several dark hours worrying that I had lost Mr. Ant.

We were just friends then. The sweet days of our high school courtship had ended when we moved on to college- he to NYC and I to Boston. We knew that we had something very special together as high school sweethearts, but decided that we were far too young to settle down. So we went our separate ways and dated other people.

Despite the fun and drama of the singles scene and the dating game in college, we missed each other dearly. During those late night phone calls and instant messages, we would sometimes confess lingering feelings and how no other relationship even came close to what we had together. But the timing was always wrong. And a long-distance relationship seemed so inconvenient. And there were so many other fish in the sea to meet. And so, we remained just friends.

That September of 2001, Mr. Ant was interning at the WTC. When 9/11 struck and I couldn’t reach him for the entire day, I was absolutely devastated. At last, we connected late that night and I was relieved to learn that he was okay!

Soon afterwards, he came up to visit me. We talked and joked non-stop like old, best friends until the wee hours of the morning, when, in our state of delirious joy, he broke the “just friends” rule with a long-awaited kiss. And we’ve been happily together ever since!

In a way, the tragedies of 9/11 were responsible for bringing us back together. It was a powerful reminder that our days are numbered and we should cherish the people who mean the most to us.

Has 9/11 changed your life in any way?

Every day I thank God for my life and my family. I had worked for Merrill Lynch in the WTC and had just moved to CT for a new job about a month before 9/11. I was commutting in and out of city working as a consultant to help with some lingering projects. I happened to miss the train into the city and decided to work from home. To this day I have not been back to the site and pray I never will. A lot of good people, friends, died that day. Its something that couldn’t NOT change your life.

When 9-11 hit I was working in finance in NH. Giant monitors lined the walls of the gargantuan office building I worked in at the time. Images of what was happening crowded every screen but there was no sound, and we mobbed around the televisions to try to discern what it all meant.

That day I realized life is just too unpredictable to dwell on unhappiness and let the little things keep you down. I abhorred my job, was sick of crying over it and a recently broken heart, and found the strength I needed to finally sever all ties the following week. I went back to school in DC and within a few months started dating the person I am now engaged to marry.

My dad worked across the street from the WTC. He was coming out of the building (the path); just got out of the building when he looked up and saw the plane speeding in. He started running when the plane hit the first building and ran up to his office to call my mom. While he was on the phone, the second plane hit, and he dropped everything and ran to battery park. He didn’t get back into NJ until 4pm, but my family was fortunate enough to know he was okay almost instantly.

I was in college when all this happened and it was surreal. While I was so joyful my father survived, I mourned for my good friend. As others would later tell us, he stayed behind to help others get out and got trapped. He had a memorial without his body, but it was more touching than sad because he was a testament of selflessness and goodwill.

My father, sick of all the craziness, eventually moved out to Dallas last year. Every day, I’m thankful he’s alive. He’s a hero to me because he made it back home safely, and my friend’s a hero because he stayed behind to save others. It’s a hard day to remember and sometimes I have to ignore it… but the previous poster is right: it changed my life.

9/11 has affected my life in many ways. Aside from the horror of watching it happen on television, it hits home on a much closer level. Mr. Sunflower unfortunately lost a cousin and an aunt in the WTC. We’ll have conversations sometimes, just about that horrible day. They always end in tears.

My father works for a major NY electric company and was down at the WTC for days laying wires and cables to restore electricity to the area. He had to wear a full body suit with oxygen masks to prevent the inhalation of anything toxic. I remember the way he looked every night when he’d walk in the house at 12 or 1 am. He looked tired, sad, and sick. He will never fully describe the things that he had seen, but I can tell you that whatever brown hair he had left went fully gray and he hasn’t been the same since.
