Open Question: Stamp Pads

September 15th, 2006 @ 11:34 am by Open Question

I love you guys! I check in every day and read the posts. It’s been wonderful help.

Here’s my question, does anyone know of a brand of ink pads that don’t smear OR take a decade to dry? I use stamps to “pretty up” my personal note cards (like Mrs. Ladybug ~ she gave me some great ideas ~ thank you!), but when I’m ready to seal and send, it’s just a mess and ends up looking tacky. Any suggestions ~ I’ve even used a hairdryer.

I think it depends on the type of paper you’re using. I had to buy a special ink pad for stamping on vellum. I think you’d need something special for most glossy papers. The one that worked on vellum is called “Brilliance”.

Monica is right, it depends on the paper. I usually use plain cardstock so I never have any drying issues. Colorbox works for me pretty well!

I used Color Box on my save the dates (on regular cardstock) and I LOVED it! I also had Fresh ink and I think one other brand, and I tried all of those and they just looked “stamped” and cheap, the ink didn’t completely fill in the stamped area so it was kind of blotchy. But with Color Box I just pushed HARD into the ink twice per stamp and the image came out sooooooo perfect and gorgeous and looks professionally printed on. I was very impressed! :-)

I actually use stampin’ up! ink pads. Unfortunately, you can only buy them through a demonstrator but they work really well. But most craft stores sell stamp pads that you can use. You want ones that are water based so that they do dry immediately, but if you are stamping on vellum or glass or pretty much anything else, you want the ones that are pigment based. Note, when you store your ink pads, store them upside down so that the ink doesn’t settle to the bottom of the ink pad (which won’t surface either). Also, if the stamp that you are using is pretty big, turn the stamp upside down so that the rubber part is facing you. And ink the stamp all over so that you can see the places you missed. I noticed that when you do it the other way, sometimes the middle doesn’t get inked very well.

make sure your inkpad is dye-based, rather than pigment-based (which take longer to dry). you’ll get a lot more color, and it will soak into the paper better.

they’re a little more expensive, but i think it’s worth it. Check Stampin Up, PrintWorks and Rubber Stampede inks pads, which will specify whether they are dye or pigment.

I used Colorbox and Fresh Ink on my CD favors I used Brilliance on my place cards All of them worked wonderfully. The only one I thought that smeared a little if too much ink was used was Fresh Ink Hope that helps!

I love VersaColor ink pads which is a pigment ink. I also use color box and they both work well. Stamp and let it dry for about 10-15 seconds or so. I haven’t had any problems. You can go to http://www.tsukineko.com which is the company that makes Versacolor and they a have tips and techniques section. You can go the the different stamp pads and they tell you what papers it works on. Like Monica said “Brilliance” works on vellum. Hope that helps. Happy stamping!

I second the Stampin Up! ink pads. I’m using them for my diy invitations.

I think it definitely depends on the paper, that is probably more important than the pad. Colorbox is very good though.
Have you tried embossing? It looks so much nicer than stamping and it is so much fun! You can use your same rubber stamps, just with an embossing pad and a heat tool.
Fun, fun, fun!
I did my save the dates that way and they turned out really nice.
