Open Question: Lace

September 18th, 2006 @ 11:09 am by Open Question

Dear weddingbee:

I am hoping to find out if anyone has been to or purchased from Lace Star (215 West 40th Street). They have beautiful lace on the website. My mom is making my wedding dress and some of their French lace is perfect. She’s coming to visit Connecticut for 3 days, so I don’t want to drive to NYC unless it’s worth it. Any help would be awesome!

Thanks!
Lissa

I have never shopped for lace, but the NYC fabric district is awesome. While you’re in NYC, you should also check out sposabella lace http://www.sposabellalace.com/index.html, which specializes in bridal lace. There are mini reviews of the stores at this website http://www.paulanadelstern.com/fabric/guides/index.html

Good luck!

I have shopped there, they have an enourmous selection, but they are VERY overpriced. Depending what you are looking for, you may find it there, or at any number of the other shops on that block, or 37th or 38th or 39th or 40th- that specialize in bridal fabrics. My friend traveled in from North Carolina a year ago to buy lace for her gown that she was going to make. I took 2 days off work (I work in that industry) to help her scour the fabric district for what she was looking for. You can also try Mood Fabrics (of Project Runway Fame- they do have an emourmous selection of beautiful off-price fabrics and Laces of all kinds)… and be sure to ask the helpful people in the stores where else too go if they don’t have exactly what you are looking for. Most of the shops with the better prices are inside buildings on higher floors and don’t have store fronts so you gotta know where you’re going. If your mom is “crafty”, you may also want to visit some of the bridal accessories stores in that area… and you’ll get better qualityand prices on linings, satins and all the other materials she will need. My mom is currently making my dress- a Vera Wang knock-off, but with pink petti-coats - and she ordered all the French Tulle and other fabrics directly through Mood. Good Luck!

Lace Star is expensive and overwhelming. Sposabella is tricky…first make sure the owner isn’t in the room and then you can start bargaining with the sales women ;) It’s best if you’re haggling over the last piece of it’s kind left in the shop.
