Open Question: Body Flattering Dress

September 19th, 2006 @ 2:15 pm by Open Question

I LOVE, LOVE your site… it really helps me out a lot.

I have a question for your readers. I have a bra size of 36 C or D and I feel that maybe a v neck would be the way to go for a wedding dress, and that it would be the most flattering. I was wondering if there were any of your readers who also have a problem with deciding which features on a dress make their boobs not big, but make ‘em look nice?

I’m not a skinny girl with big breasts, I have a really curvy body (think Beyonce) and my boobs have always caused me trouble in finding outfits. I picked out a wedding dress but the front part is a round cut, and I’m afraid it doesn’t flatter my cup size.

Thanks in advance!

Sincerely,

AL

OOOOhhh me me me!! Ok, Same problem, but with not so curvy below the boobies. I’m a 36 DDD yes I said it ddd. I hate them. And no ladies they are not great. grrr. anyways, trying on dresses was a pain in the neck! I’d have to get a bigger size then pay TOO much for alterations. I have stuck with a strapless (hard to find strapless bra) that holds those suckers in. (maggie sottero dresses seem to understand this problem and does great with cup sizes on strapless) But in the my voyage of dress findings, I found that the most flattering has been these….

and strapless…. *ahem my dress*

stay away from the…

Hope this helps. :) (and let’s hope the links show)

i have the same problem…34D…dont wear dresses w/Vnecks…you’ll be covering yourself all night…the best styles are ones that go straight across in the front…

I’m with Julie. Don’t get V necks! You’ll be all boob all night. Nothing emphasizes the breasts like a nice deeeep V- drawing the eye right down to the cleavage. I think square (or straight) necklines are the way to, and you can always have the dress altered so it comes up a little higher on the chest and reveals less cleavage…I added and inch and a half to mine.

I definitely wouldn’t do a strapless or anything that goes straight across– you’ll be pulling up your dress all night…. I do think a V neck is more flattering, you just don’t need it to go so deep that it displays your cleavage– and if not a V-neck, anything with straps!

I have the same issue! 36C and curvy . . . I did go with a V-neck — happy to send a picture if you want one. You can contact me at jamia_g@yahoo.com

I disagree about the V-neck. I’m a 36D and I looked for a V-neck for my wedding dress. Every fashion magazine I have ever read has said V-necks are more flattering for large breasted women. Straight across strapless makes you look like you have one breast, like a sports bra! I ended up with a strapless dress but with a sweetheart cut, it’s the best of both worlds. Good luck!

I am right with you on this one-38DD…It’s no fun:(
I tried on strapless dresses that felt great in the store but I could only imagine having to adjust myself all night and strapless bras on big chests are ultimately useless. I ended up with a V-neck myself, not too low cut with thicker straps-the advantage of this is that you can wear a normal bra! Not a strapless, one like you would wear everyday-there are some great minimizer bras that are lacy and pretty but still hold everything where it shold be!
Good luck!

Bee, if you ever publish a Weddingbee magazine or book (which I would adore, btw) you should definitely feature real women with different figures modeling different style dresses to show what styles flatter what body types.

Sounds like you’re an “hourglass” body type. From the web are these suggestions:

DO wear strapless gowns, they look fantastic on shapely girls! You will obviously need extra support in the bust area, but it is worth the effort. The best look is strapless at the neckline, with an A-line skirt. Also a straight-through gown is best, as opposed to a two-piece gown. The two-piece will tend to cut you in half, which can accentuate the hourglass shape.

If you’re not keen on strapless, a V-neckline is extremely flattering on a full bust. The V-shape should be fairly low (as low as you’re comfortable with), as a higher neckline actually makes the bust appear even bigger. A particularly flattering look is an off-the-shoulder V-neckline. A scooped, off-the-shoulder neckline is also very appealing.

The current styles which have lots of draping or ruching on them, are an excellent choice for an hourglass-shaped bride. Despite what many may think, draping is very good at disguising the not-so-good bits, which we all want to hide.

I think that you can’t just say that one type of dress is the the answer. It depends on your specific body type and the way the dress is made.

What kinds of clothes do you think flatter you in real life? What makes you feel beautiful and comfortable? That is your best bet. Use that as a starting point and look for dresses that mimic that silhouette. This will be hard because most dressmakers create for trends and not body shapes. Many shops are not informed about what’s available and will only direct you to trneds as well. But you need to be steadfast and shop not for trends, but for your unique body shape. Find a shop with a wide range of prices, designers and styles with associates who will show you a range of dresses not caring about making a big sale. They are out there. You may need to visit a few to figure out which ones they are.

Some strapless are beautiful — but most aren’t made right and don’t fit. And I’m sorry, but many girls don’t have the backs, shoulders and arms to pull them off. Halters and v-necks can be good starting points, but only if they are made in a way that is flattering. Even a sweetheart or boatneck needs to fit your dimensions or could overwhelm you or make you look oddly proportioned — or just fat.

I personally did a two-piece (I’m petite and the long mermaid skirt lengthened and the beaded top helped to minimize.) It did not cut me in half — but then i don’t have a long torso. If I did, than it might have. A two piece may work better because they can buy the separates in the sizes you need. Then, you can wear the pieces again and justify the costs.

I’m only 5′0″ and 40DD and not that big, if that makes you feel better and finding dresses that didnt make my boobs pop out everywhere was a challenge but i did find one! i ts maggie sottero “Rose” . I wanted a reduction before the wedding but its going to have to wait and i wish you luck!

oh i forgot to mention…my dress is strapless with an A line skirt and a wrap around waist, it is wonderful, i dont feel like i will have to be adjusting all night at all, i got my dress a size too big just so i could make sure it covered all of my boob and since it laces up hte back..it really makes my waist look small and i have no overhand in the back.
