Reader Buzz: Down on One Knee

September 19th, 2006 @ 10:48 am by Mrs. Bee

Reader Lauren left an interesting comment recently about whether or not it matters which knee (right vs. left) is used when proposing. I couldn’t find anything online that indicated a specific knee had to be used. Getting down on one knee is hard enough, so does it really matter which one it is? :P

Getting down on one knee to propose has been a tradition for many years and continues to thrive today. It has its roots in the days of knights and chivalry, when it was the custom for a knight to bend down on one knee to show servitude to his lover. (via sharpman)

When your guy proposed, did he get down on one knee?

Mr. Bluebell told me later that he WOULD have, but there was snow on the ground (outside proposal) and he didn’t want his pants to get wet. Now that’s romantic! :-)

my fiance first got on one knee and held my hand. after i saw the ring and heard the “will you marry me?” part, i started to back away (in disbelief). so he ended up having to get on both knees and crawl towards me (while holding my hand still).

Fiance got down on two knees, which I thought was cute and funny.

I honestly don’t remember if it was one knee or two. I wasn’t focusing on his knees!

another question to ask: what leg do you put the garter belt on? does it matter? oh… and do you put on both the toss & keeper or just one until the reception?!? i have had many brides ask me… i know in the end it’s the brides choice but is their a tradition or meaning behind the whole garter toss?

my fi didn’t get down on one knee cuz we were both like 30 ft under water during one of those cruise excursions in St. Thomas. he just slid the ring on my finger while we were under water; when i saw the ring, i started hyperventilating…perfect as we were underwater, right? haha

he meant to…but in the heat of the moment he forgot. like ten minutes after the proposal, we were sitting together on the couch talking about it, and he looks up suddenly and goes “shoot, i forgot to get down on my knee” but neiter of us realized until then!

There needs to be a third option: both knees. My husband unintentionally got down on both knees when he proposed. =)

he didn’t because he got flustered. the park was supposed to be empty and instead it was packed with a band and people, and the picnic table he scoped out was taken up. in his panic, he just whipped out the wing and tried to get the question out of his mouth.

I thought it was super cute anyways.

The first time, we were sitting on the floor and he just sort of…said it. Half-unintentionally, I think. But since he likes to “do things right”, when he presented me with a ring and asked again (even though I’d already said yes, lol) he got down on one knee :-D

My fiance got on one knee in the rain, in front of the castle at Disneyland. In the rain! In front of tons of people! I was embarrassed FOR him!

For Lauren - I believe the “correct” knee would be to kneel on the left knee, with the right foot on the floor. As this does date way back, that would be the correct side to kneel on and still be able to draw a sword and stand in one swift movement if necessary. (For a right-handed person.) Martial arts still teaches this. FYI.
