I’ve been sick this whole week. Although being an insomniac, four nights of nyquil induced slumber (god bless nyquil) has afforded me some of the best sleep I’ve had in a long time. I’m having some friends over for dinner tonight (read: cooking and cleaning), and another friend over for dinner tomorrow (read: more cooking), then I’m leaving for Miss Butterfly’s bachelorette party in Atlantic City this weekend. I love to entertain though, so it’s actually a treat.
Sorry for my rambly-ness, but the point of this entry was to tell you the story of how Miss Butterfly and I met because it’s a pretty great one.
It was November 2003. I was in New York on vacation, and Miss Butterfly, two other girls and I decided to have dinner together. We all “knew” each other for years through our personal blogs, but this was the first time all of us were meeting. (I also met Mr. Bee for the first time the following night). Miss Butterfly and I subsequently became friends and hung out all the time once I moved to New York the following August.
Fast forward one year to Christmas 2004. Mr. Bee and I were now engaged and I had moved to New York from Los Angeles. Miss Butterfly was visiting her parents in Houston and called me on Christmas evening.
Miss Butterfly: Guess what? You’re never going to believe this.
Me: What?
Miss Butterfly: Your mom and my mom know each other!
Me: What??? How?
Miss Butterfly: My mom kept talking about how her friend’s daughter moved from LA to New York, and how I should call her and hang out with her, and how she met her fiance while she was visiting New York, and how she had to go to that friend’s daughter’s wedding in New York, and it was in March next year…
So I asked her wait, “What’s the girl’s name?” And she said, “Bee.” And I said, “What?! I’m friends with her!”
Your mom and my mom have been best friends since they went to college together in Korea!!
Me: OMG - your mom is my mom’s friend in Houston??? My mom talks about her all the time!!! That is so crazy!
I immediately called my mom and told her the story. All of us were shocked/amazed/ amused and had a great laugh about it all. Cliche as it is, the internet has made the world an incredibly small place. Our moms have been friends since before Miss Butterfly and I were even born. Their friendship has spanned 30+ years and has survived a move across the Atlantic and thousands of miles - with my mom in Los Angeles and Miss Butterfly’s in Houston.
Unfortunately Miss Butterfly’s mom couldn’t make it to my wedding because of work, but my mom will be attending Miss Butterfly’s wedding in November. Our moms haven’t seen each other in 10 years.
One of my favorite parts of the story is when I discovered that Miss Butterfly’s parents lived on Kismet Lane. Kismet means fate. And it was. ![]()
