Reader Buzz: Quality Time

September 26th, 2006 @ 10:56 am by Mrs. Bee

I always ask couples how they spend time together, because Mr. Bee and I don’t have that much time with each other during the week. I wonder if we’re not spending enough time together - we don’t eat together (except on weekends), Mr. Bee works late, and he falls asleep soon after he gets home, I work even later (insomnia) and Mr. Bee leaves for work before I get up in the morning.

Most couples tell me they spend time every night by watching tv together. The only tv shows Mr. Bee and I follow are 24 and a shared passion for Law & Order - we need to get into more shows! :P Our quality time every evening is usually spent talking about our days and work in general. ;)

How do you and your significant other spend time together throughout the week?

I work regular hours (8-4) but my fiance works for himself and prefers odd hours (usually begins working around noon) but he’ll put work on hiatus when I get home and we’ll run errands together, catch up on shows (we have a DVR) and of course eat dinner together (usually while watching tv, must be efficient). Then when 11pm rolls around, I go to bed and he back to work until anytime between 4am and 6am. And the cycle continues. As for weekends, he usually tries to stay free of work but sometimes work sneaks into the mix. And that’s how we try to get in some QT (quality time).

My fiance and I are lucky that our offices are only one block apart so we eat lunch together about two to three times a week. We also live together so we sometimes commute on the train together, however I generally have to be at work earlier than he does. In an attempt to exercise more we are walking home from work so we spend the 35 minutes just chatting about our day. We’ve only been walking home for two weeks, but I have to say it’s really great quality time together and I hope we can keep it up.

Good topic! We live together and take the same subway to work, but we are both so sleepy I don’t count that! We spend lots of time on the weekends on our own - walking around, shopping, museums, etc. When things get too hectic with travel, family obligations, etc., we make it a point to have date night - we go out to dinner alone, do NOT discuss wedding plans, and relax.

We go for walks together in the evenings with the dog - it’s a time I treasure since there are no distractions.

I’m looking forward to the end of wedding planning freeing up my time…

We live together, we eat dinner together every night ( i cook 3-4 times a week) but we do our separate things. We also sleep at the same time too. On weekends we spend most of the time together. Errands, strolling through the city, brunches, dinners, dog park. He also hangs out with his buddies without me and I do the same but we also spend time together with friends too.. so i think it’s a good balance.

My boyfriend and I live together, but we work very different schedules. So, one way we can get in couple time is when we run together. We get up very early in the morning–5am for me, 5:45 for him (I need more time to be prepared for running) and then we hit the streets. Together, we run between four and five miles about three times a week. I usually get in another couple of runs by myself, and he goes to the gym and lifts weights several times a week. It’s a wonderful way to spend time together–we talk sometimes, but a lot of it is just enjoying each other’s company. We get to see some beautiful sunrises, we see a lot of wildlife, from great blue herons to the occasional deer, and in the colder months we see the stars! And I get to watch his very cute butt and legs while I’m running. ;)

We see each other practically everyday and we’re still madly in love with each other =P I just can’t get enough of him. We’re one “old married couple” all my friends said. Weekdays are pretty routine, he’d join me and my 6 year old son for dinner after work, and we would spend QT together after putting my son to bed. We rarely have time for dates b/c we have the little monster tagging along on the weekends but b/c of the weddings the past two Saturdays, we got to spend some QT alone dining and dancing which was very nice. I cherish every moment we’re together, it doesn’t matter what we do as long as I’m with him.

My FI and I have very different schedules, with him working weekends and me not. Also, he’s in two bands, so he’s not home many evenings and my work can keep me out pretty late. So, about 6 months ago, we created “Date Night.” At the beginning of every week, we schedule in a night that we both have free and we don’t let any other obligation get in the way. Our friends and family have actually learned to steer clear on date night. These nights aren’t fancy (since we are saving for the wedding). We make dinner together, go for a hike, play catch in the park, drink a bottle of wine and watch the stars. Date nights are my favorite nights of the week.

We both work together(in the same dept.) AND live together so we get a lot of each other!! haha but we know how to seperate the 2 and never bring work home with us. Our actual relaxe time is cooking dinner together. After that, I run aroung the house cleaning and he watches sports. We meet back up when it’s bedtime! :)

I work a normal business schedule and his is sporatic — a lot of nights and weekends. We don’t live together, so we don’t get to see each other as much as we would like, but our whole relationship up until last month has been long-distance, so we get to see each other more than we used to.

I bring him dinner on his lunch break a few nights a week, and we also try to have at least one “date night” which is usually the highlight of my week. Not seeing each other as often really helps me to appreciate the time I do get with him.

I can’t wait until we get married next month and can move in together, because we will definilty see each other a lot more.

i work normal 9-5 while he runs a restaurant and comes home at 2am, the only time i get to see him during the week is when i wake up from a nap at 2 am and keep him company while he eats dinner i left for him. Then I have to go back to bed, and on weekends i only get one day with him since his week only consist of one day off..boo hoo, so we talk a lot on the phone to keep in touch

my bf and i are long distance and he’s in the midwest so that’s a 3 hour time difference as well so we take any opportunity we can to spend time together. we spend time on aim and then hop on the phone because there’s nothing better than hearing his voice. sometimes, when we’re both free, we’ll play one of those online games which is always fun…especially when i start trash talking.

but when we are together we do whatever we can, picnics, walks, shopping. just being able to do everyday couple things means a lot to both of us. even if it’s just taking a nap together.

we are together 16 hours a day during the weekdays & pretty much 24 hours during the weekends…

i like to obviously hangout with my friends, but the hubbs REALLY likes spending as much time together as possible…

i REALLY shouldn’t complain, he says cuz it’s better than not wanting to spend time with me… i couldn’t AGREE more :)

our time is mostly spent eating & watching tv :)

our weekend, shooting weddings or movie days :)

my fiance and i have to relish our time together due to our opposite schedules. i work monday through friday and from 7-4…he’s a line cook at a hotel and works 2-midnight saturday through wednesday, is a cooking instructor on thursdays, and is editing a film during any of his off time. we see each other on thursday & friday evenings & saturday & sunday mornings. with so little mutual time, we try to spend it by listening to music (no TV thursdays), going for walks with the dog, hiking at our favorite local trail (site of our first date & where he proposed) and daydreaming about winning the lottery. :) most weekends, i am spoiled with a delicious breakfast prepared by my own personal chef! we don’t get to spend a lot of time together, but i love the time when we do see each other.

We get a ton of time together right now since we’re both unemployed, full-time students. We’re together probably 5 evenings a week. We spend a LOT of time cuddling–probably about three hours an evening. We always watch Seinfeld and The Daily Show/Colbert Report together. I’m more of a morning person and Jeff definitely isn’t, so when I go to bed he tucks me in and sets my alarm for the next morning, and when I get up and he’s still asleep I’ll often stay and snuggle for a while longer.

We also go on walks together and run errands together–even if we’re just picking up Taco Bell or running to the pharmacy, we go together.

We try to enjoy our time together now because we know that once we start graduate school (he’s going to Law school; I’m studying English) we’ll have almost no time together.

Now that both of us are working and although our work schedules differ, my fiance and i try to see eachother as much as possible. He works overnight so during the day he needs to sleep for most part of it but he sacrifices his sleep time to spend time with me. We usually eat together, go shopping, or i force him to do something wedding related! (haha)

Living in HK makes our life really busy, so for the first few months of our newlywed life, we had our own schedules and hardly any Quality Time together! So we decided at the beginning of the month, we’ll jot down what our schedule is on our calendar (Church meetings, golf lessons, basketball, girls night out, etc) and if we see any blank dates, we prioratize it for ourselves, and we go out for dinner, movies, driving range or cook and eat at home. Otherwise we’ll both think we’re free on the blank dates so we’ll end up making plans with other people. Monday nights are his Bball night, so I usually hang out with my girlfriends, or stay at home and spend time with myself :)

It’s nice to watch TV and cuddle/eat dinner together, but once a while, it’s good to make good use of our dining table and just communicate :)

we actually bought all the x-files dvds and watch them together when we have a chance to sit down together. it’s nerdy but we both loved the show when we were younger and it’s just forty minutes of relaxing together that we both relish. of course we only get to do this about once a week. heh.
