i was acutally doing research for hotels along the hudson valley Shawangunk wine trail, and found some amazing b&bs about an hour to 2 hours away, not sure if that’s too far for you… a main directory is http://www.bbonline.com/ but there is also http://www.newpaltzchamber.org/pages/Lodging.php for more info on lodging around the new paltz area. i’m not sure if they do it, but if you COUld have your wedding at a winery that would be GORGEOUS!

Have you looked into any places near Bear Mountain? I know there’s a nice place called Bear Mountain Inn (I think) and it’s nice- and they have a lot of space. Not sure about a garden, but they might be able to put a tent there. … in NJ okay?

Have you looked into “the Gardens at Catlin Creek”? It’s in Slate Hill, NY - a small, quaint estate that they transformed - beautiful gardens w/ thousands of tulips in the spring and pumpkins, fall foliage and mums in the fall. Reception is indoors overlooking the gardens, with a “tent” feel. It’s more like a treehouse with a tent top. We looked all throughout north Jersey and Hudson Valley, and fell in love with Catlin. Pictures on website does not do it justice.

wow thank you for all of the suggestions– you guys are so sweet!

i actually checked out The Park Savoy in Florham Park last weekend. The garden where the ceremony would be held is BEAUTIFUL. the only thing is the indoor dining room and cocktail hour can appear to be quite dark. It also is a bit pricey.

when i get a chance i will check out the B&B places too.

thanks again :)

I looked at the website for the Gardens at Catlin Creek. I am going to try to set up an appt to visit next Saturday. i love that the indoor dining room looks as if it is in a tent!

i also looked at bear mountain inn.. very cute. did you see carousel?!? if i can get an appt for the Gardens at Catlin Creek I will try to visit the Bear Mountain Inn as well.

Wineries - try Long Island (not sure if it fits the 1 hour) and anywhere in Westchester should fall in the 1 hour.

If you’re looking for garden/tent, there may be some Hudson Valley mansion type places that could accomodate.

Does Wave Hill allow tented receptions? (it’s in Riverdale - w/in nyc, not even 1 hr!).

Things to consider when doing a tent/garden wedding: are there going to be easily accessible bathrooms for guests? is there a kitchen or space workable for a caterer? Is there sufficient walkways/smooth ground for all guests, particularly those in heels or who have trouble walking, to get to the ceremony & the reception?

I’m considering a few venues in the Hudson Valley, and have found this Hudson Valley Weddings Website very helpful. They have a long list of venues.

http://www.hudsonvalleyweddings.com/

We are leaning towards a winery in the Hudson Valley and recently visited Millbrook Winery…GORGEOUS setting, beautiful rustic barn/loft, rows and rows of grapes, a cute little lake with picnic tables, and affordable at $200 per hour for site rental. However, we found the people there SO UNPLEASANT! We wanted to do a tasting, and they FORCED us to also do a tour (totally ridiculous), and the guide and everyone who worked there seemed very pretentious, and mostly just concerned with selling their wine. Additionally, when we asked about hosting a private a event there, we were told to wait for the “gal who’s in charge of that”, and pushed aside (so they could ring up customers who were buying wine), and eventually forgotten. So we left. We figured planning a wedding would be stressful enough, no need to add snooty staff at the venue to it. Sigh. Other than their attitudes, it was perfect though.

Best of luck! There are many beautiful places in the Hudson Valley that would be perfect for an outdoor garden wedding!
