Breakaway Bouquets

September 27th, 2006 @ 9:30 am by Mrs. Bee

Weddingbee reader Geoyce wrote us asking for more information about breakaway bouquets, so I did a little research on them since they’re a really interesting twist on the bouquet toss tradition.

Breakaway bouquets are comprised of several mini bouquets loosely tied together. Each of these mini bouquets also have a cake charm and maybe even the charm’s meaning attached to it. When the bride tosses her bouquet, it breaks apart and several people catch a mini bouquet! You can have your florist create one for you, or try your hand at making your own.

Jewelry by Rhonda has an extensive list of cake charm meanings, so you can pick specific charms with meanings you like. A beehive charm for example means “You Will Have a Gratifying Life of Help and Service to Others.” :)

I would have loved to have done this for my wedding so lots of gals could have caught the bouquet. Plus everyone could participate so your single gal pals won’t feel singled out.

I’ve always kind of wondered about this. I’m looking for ways to make our wedding unique, and this seems like a nice way to do it. How do you throw the bouque though? Do you do it all at once and it just comes apart? Or do you do them one at a time? Silly question, but I’ve wondered since I saw this idea a while back.

Whoops, I should proof before submitting. I meant “bouquet”, of course.

That’s what I’m doing. You throw it all at once so it looks like 1 girl will get it, but it will breakaway BUT you have to strategically hold it otherwise some of the stems get stuck to each other. Hold it loosely when you toss.

I did exactly that at my wedding two weeks ago. I used charms that you can get at the craft store and told everyone it was a fortune bouquet so that more people would come up to catch it. Everyone did come up and there wasn’t that awkward moment where women are cajoled to come up an they actively don’t try and catch the flowers.

I’m planning on doing this too - and inviting all the ladies at the wedding up. I figure this way I can still toss the bouquet without calling out any single girlfriends! And my grandma is excited about trying to catch one!

at my cousin’s wedding, each piece of the bouquet had a fortune attached to it - a little slip of paper with a fortune in calligraphy. Mine said, “The man you marry is someone you currently dislike.” I was dating fi at the time, so he wasn’t pleased. :) It was cute.

i recently shot a wedding where the bride threw a break away bouquet… the girls loved it & it was so much fun… i don’t think she had charms on hers… but it was a hit :)

I’ve heard of baking charms attached to a ribbon into a cake, and having each of your bridesmaids pick a ribbon and pull. It’s a cute idea, but I love the idea of a breakway bouquet! Too cute.

I did this too! Minus the charms. I just threw three little bouquets, and everyone thought it was creative and special!
