Reader Email: A Super Bowl Proposal

September 27th, 2006 @ 1:34 pm by Mrs. Bee

Last week I received an email from Jeremy Romantic, who started a blog called My Super Proposal.

I started this blog to raise money (sort of like the Million Dollar Homepage or the One Red Paperclip, if you’ve heard of those sites), but not for personal profit. I’m not trying to get rich. Instead, I’m trying to raise enough money to buy a block of advertising time during the Super Bowl…a block of ad time that I intend to use to air a wedding proposal to my girlfriend. With the viewership for the Super Bowl being the largest of any televised event all year, it will be the single most public declaration of love in the history of mankind.

Jeremy, who appears to be an avid football fan judging from the links on his site, is even offering tshirts, mugs, and caps for sale. He’s put a lot of thought and effort into this proposal, so I thought we’d send some traffic his way.

Would you want your boyfriend to propose to you during the Super Bowl?

He’s a colts fan (I love Payton Manning) I’ll have to buy something! ;)

I only hope his girlfriend doesn’t catch wind of this before he does it…seems like he might end up getting a bit of publicity.

It only backfires if he gets enough publicity AND if somebody spills the beans on his actual identity. It looks like he is taking reasonable steps to keep that from happening, so he should be okay. :)

i voted no. as much as i LOVE sports and being the center of attention, i told my bf that i he can propose however he likes as long as it was not at a sporting event. i always thought those were a little cheesy and i wanted our proposal to be an intimate and personal event in our lives. besides, i’d be too distracted with the play on the field anyway.

i guess it would be different if they both shared a love for a team or sport. hopefully he’ll pull it off without being uncovered first.

reminds me of King of Queens - Doug proposed to Carrie at a football game.

there are so many more worthwhile things a guy could do with two million. i would be pissed that he wasted that on a commercial.

i dunno. i don’t think he gets the point of a relationship if he feels this is what he needs to do to propose to his girlfriend.

but the items for sale are cute, but i still don’t think it’s the right way to go. that’s an awful lot of money to raise for just your own individual cause. but hey if people want to support him. great for him.

i agree with snot. he says it’s not for personal profit—but it is. he’s using it to propose to his gf…it’s still a personal gain for them. i think that money would be better spent elsewhere–he could have a spectacular proposal for a lot less– just look at some of the entries from the romantic story contest.

If she also loves football, then it’s super. I hate the over the top room full of flowers romantic (especially if its on valentines day, barf) proposals, and always said I’d prefer the teletron at Yankee Stadium over a proposal on Valentine’s day — though neither is ideal. BUT if it’s a super cute connection (she was a NFL cheerleader, or HUGE football fan, etc.) than I’m kinda all good with the public-sporting-event proposals.

I do think it’s more of a private moment though about the 2 people, and any of the big public proposals are way to “LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!” and kinda lame. Like he really loves her the most because he’s proposing the most publicly?? That’s baloney…
