Weddingbee Going National

September 27th, 2006 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Bee

Ever since we launched Weddingbee back in February of this year, we’ve been getting emails asking when we’re going to launch in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, the UK… even Australia!

At first, my thought had been that we would expand the site city by city, with a separate weddingbee for every city. I really valued info on local vendors when I was planning my own wedding, and since so many wedding vendors are local… it just seemed to make sense. But as weddingbee has grown, I’ve been really surprised at how national our readership has been!

So now we’re considering opening up more cities, not as distinct sites, but all together on this site. Of course, there’d still be the option to read each city separately - so you could still read *only* New York City posts if you wanted. But you’d also be able to read posts from all the brides all together, on the Weddingbee frontpage.

Before we proceed, I wanted to get your thoughts. Does it feel ok to add a few more cities into the mix? Please let me know!

p.s. The first cities we’re considering for expansion are Los Angeles / Orange County, San Francisco, Houston, and Chicago. Let us know if you’re interested!

Awesome! A great idea! Can’t believe weddingbee is less than a year old! I vote for Phoenix. I adore seeing how different weddings are, region to region. Any expansion is cool!

i think it’d be great to add a few cities in! def LA/OC. i doubt you’ll have something up by the time i get married (next sat!) but hey, it’ll be useful for brides who are still planning theirs out!

I think it’s a great idea although I will miss the underground feel of the current weddingbee.

I vote for LA! Um, just because my friend wants to be a bee and lives there!

But I am so excited to now (soon) be a part of a Major National Website! Hehehe. :-)

can we contribute even though we’re not yet engaged?

Try a tab of one more city and see how it goes. Remember that you’re gonna have to change the look of weddingbee also to accomodate another city.

I think this is a great idea… it seems that the majority of your readers aren’t even from NYC??? I am from Ohio, so I would love a Cleveland/Columbus one.

The first couple times I visited weddingbee I didn’t even realize it was NY only, so much of the advice is global or “internet” advice. From what I’ve found, weddingbee is one of the best sites for honest (i.e. not from someone trying to make $$ from ads) wedding sites. It’s great to hear stories of real brides.

I’d love a local one too (doesn’t DETROIT sound like a romantic city? no…). But I would either keep NY or maybe a “global” as your main page, I can see it getting very crowded with people talking about local vendors that 99% of us don’t care about. But I also think you’d have a niche down that needs to be filled, theknot is really hard to search for local brides (other than advertisements, which I don’t trust). You could definately devolope a local section, that would be awesome.

YAY! I’m SO glad you’re adding San Francisco! I have a lot of friends getting married in the Bay Area next year, so I am definitely going to refer weddingbee to them!

I think it’s a good idea to collaborate everything on one site, but have the option of narrowing down posts to city-specific. That way, everyone can read each other’s ideas on general topics (like DIY calligraphy, ceremony do’s and don’t’s), but is also allowed to read reviews on local vendors.

Congrats on weddingbee’s success!

Repeat this mantra… SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF SF… okay you get the point. =D

Mrs. Bee, sounds like a fantastic idea, def. do a “trial run” like you’ve done with other features… can’t wait!!

THE TWIN CITIES!!! YAY!
but I’d have to say i agree that it could get crowded with so many cities. I like Laura’s tab idea!

Not yet engaged but SF for sure and a vote in for Hawaii too. Destination weddings are becoming popular and it would help since I’m not local.

I must say, this site has become my favorite site to visit…each day as I am supposed to be working. :)
I think it is a great idea to take the site national, as I too, had no idea initially that the site was geared towards the NYC brides. I figured it out easily enough, but it would be great to have a section for each city’s events, sales, etc.
Minneapolis/ St. Paul gets my vote, hook us up! ha-ha!!

You can do it DailyCandy style where you can change the “edition” to view each city…

i’m so happy for you! but like ocicats above i will miss the “underground” feel of the current weddingbee, it’s like a little nyc secret :)

its a great idea! maybe you should start with regional areas, like weddingbee is not only NYC its mostly NYC but the brides and brides to be have talked about vendors in NYC, NJ, PENN… so maybe instead of do just LA or SF, you can try northern Cali, Southern Cali, etc… brides search far and wide or perfect things for their wedding just one metro area is so limited.

41.
Guest Icon

That would be amazing! What a great idea!

Don’t forget the Midwest (Chicago only sort of counts)! Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, South/North Dakota and Minnesota have brides too!!! You’ve done a great job on this site and I know that wherever you choose to expand, it will be awesome.

43.
Guest Icon

maybe you can also have a destination wedding section as well… for cities like hawaii, bahamas.. etc.

44.
Guest Icon

I vote for Boston too. It sort of works on the regional sense too, since people might plan weddings in Rhode Island/Vermont/New Hampshire when they live in either city - to save money if nothing else!

please do add more places! it would add to this site immenesly!

how about:

1) a main weddingbee entrance page where each city is in a link (like DailyCandy) where you just click to your favorite city.

2) or have NY the homepage, and link of other cities listed vertically on the left or horizontally on the top (like craigslist)

but anyhow, each city should be kept separately, makes nagivating through the pages much easier.

instead of limiting to SF, can u make it “the Bay Area” instead?

I definitely vote for Seattle or Portland. Maybe put them together as 1 section until the interest grows more?? Trends tend to be similar between the two.

How about Canada? You could have it just as one “Canada” or Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal as 3 seperate ones. I’m curious to know what your stats are for Canadian readers. I’m on here every day from Vancouver!

Miss Poppy… I don’t know if you will see this, but I am currently living in Columbus… I went to school here, and I am working in Grove City. I grew up in Cleveland, and my parents currently live in Massillon, where the wedding is going to be. It is awesome to see another “Ohio girl” on here!!!!

I think this is definitely a good idea bc sites with this original idea turned into something ugly and completely useless over time i.e. the knot, where people just come to chat about random whatevers - totally frustrating!

We would love to have you here. I would also add San Antonio to the mix. I second Nhi. It would be best to go with TEXAS. Just target the state.
