Acupuncture for Weight Loss?

September 28th, 2006 @ 10:53 am by Mrs. Butterfly

I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before, but I hurt my left foot a while back. Even though it’s a lot better now, my friend (who is an acupuncturist) said I should give it a try. Last night, I went to my very first acupuncture session. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I was a bit nervous about all these needles sticking out of me, but honestly, after the initial prick, you can’t feel them at all!

So my friend and I were talking as she was poking me with needles, and I just happened to ask if you can lose weight via acupuncture. She said that she has had clients who are currently using this method and that it is successful! Of course, you still have to eat healthy and exercise (as with any other weight-loss program), but acupuncture will give you more energy, speed up your metabolism and tone up your abdominal muscles.

I have now signed up for 4 more treatments of acupuncture for my foot, knee and weight loss. Also, a few needles will be used for stress. She also gave me a ground up seed for my sleeping problem. I woke up this morning feeling completely refreshed for the first time in a long time!

I will definitely be posting in the future about the results, so stay tuned!

I’ve done acupuncture for my allergies. I had previously tried every treatment in mainstream medicine with no results. I did 8 sessions with an acupuncturist and I feel amazing. I still go in every now and then to get a refresher treatment, but compared to how I felt last fall, its like a whole new (itchy nose and watery eye free) world!

So, if you’re eating healthfully and exercising, how do you know if the acupuncture is helping the weightloss? Maybe all you need is the diet and exercise, and not the expensive needles.

Sorry if I’m being snarky, but I lost more than a hundred pounds five years ago, and I’ve kept it off. So many people have asked me how I did it, but their eyes always glaze over when I say, “eating better and exercising.” Everyone is looking for the magic method, the magic pill–or the magic needles. Thing is: they don’t exist. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, you have to change your life. You need to eat differently, and you need to exercise. Forever. Four or five acupuncture sessions aren’t going to change your life. You may lose a few pounds, but they will come back, and may bring friends.

Future Mrs. G.

Mr G. is an Acupuncturist and a chinese herbalist! I never had acupuncture or thought about it before I met him but I was excited to try once we started dating (so was my whole family- he has pricked every member of my family- and they all love it- and him) He says that it can help, and used in conjunction with traditional chinese herbal medicine, it can be a good combination and a more complete treatment option. He actuallly wrote an article about this exact topic here:

I have been taking herbs and getting acupuncture for weight control and also for healthier hair and I have been receiveing compliments like “you look well-rested” (which I’m not) and wow- why does your hair look so nice all of a sudden? I swear- it’s almost weird.
Oh- and the needles are as thin as a human hair. and they hurt less than plucking a single unwanted hair.
