Open Question: Paid Cake Tasting

Have you ever heard of having to pay to taste wedding cakes? We’re getting married in Turks & Caicos, so there’s really only one good island cake lady, and she must know this because she charges $25 per flavor we want to taste! Is it me or is this crazy???

Yep. Our first tasting is free. After that, we have to pay to taste. But, really it’s more than a taste. Our baker bakes a full size cake (10″??). I think ours are $10 per cake.

That is crrrrrrazy! But I guess she’s got you beat if she’s the only one in the area. You should find about about cake people in the sourrounding area and see how much they charge to deliver for the day of the wedding cake and go taste their stuff for free!

That seems completely insane to me. It sounds like she knows how great she is, and is taking full advantage of it. I guess all you can do is taste as few flavors as possible, and ask for the leftovers!

Ours was free, but my MOH’s was $25 per head at the tasting. Her fiance, mom, and grandma all went with her, total of $100, and they picked about 7-8 flavors ahead of time. I think that’s how hers worked, at least.

could you negotiate the cost of the tasting with her based on the cost of the cake itself? if you wanted to try 8 flavors thats $200! maybe she’ll apply that to a cake (if you end up going with her)?

I was just looking at a baker’s website two days ago and they also charge for tasting! $30! I know they probably don’t want just ANYone just go in and pretend they’re tasting for weddins but in fact just want free food, but still, $30! I think a better way to do it is if you do go with them, they’ll refund that $30 or apply that $30 to your purchase.

thanks everyone! I guess it’s so expensive because she bakes mini cakes that are decorated & everything… but heck, i just want to taste them! And apparently she’s the ONLY one on the island, so I’m pretty much stuck with her. But i do think I will try to negotiate the fee into the cake, thanks for the great ideas!
