Pretty as a Peacock

September 29th, 2006 @ 10:28 am by Mrs. Lily

Awhile back I had an idea to use peacock feathers in our wedding. I thought they would look beautiful with navy or teal or green dresses and beige linens. But… then we changed our colors and the rest is history. I forgot to blog about it until this morning when I was cleaning out my old “favorites” bookmarks (since I bookmark everything, maybe vaguely / kinda’ tidying is a better description). Anyway, here are some cool plumes I found:

From Oriental Trading Company: $7.95 for 24 pieces:

From Lamplight Feather: $48 for 100 pieces:

From Plumes and Feathers: prices vary depending on size and quantity

One of the girls I knew included a peacock feather in her invitations to display her color theme. She saved money on buying plain white invitations. She tied it all together with a blue ribbon that matched with the feather.

I am getting married in September 2008 and I am having a Peacock wedding - invitaions, working them into the bouquets, center pieces, and having the color scheme throughout! I thought it would be something different than the traditional fall themed weddings.

12.
Amanda says:

Kim,
There hasn’t been much activity on this page in a long time!! I am moving forward with the peacock theme as well, our wedding is in April of this year. We are also putting them everywhere!! I created our invitations from scratch and they turned out really nice! Let me know if you’re interested in more info….by the way, i found the cheapest feathers were at Ostrich.com. They just had a 1/2 off sale last week, too bad you missed it!

Sorry Juel, I decided against using peacock colors and feathers for my wedding so I don’t have any new ideas. If I think of any I will post them though!

I am having a wedding with peacock theme and colors. I need ideas of how to incorporate peacock feathers into the wedding.

17.
Amanda says:

I am incorporating feathers into my bouquet (white ostrich) and peacock feathers into my bridesmaids. I am also using pew bows with peacock feathers coming out of the tops. i also created my invitations with real peacock feathers in each.

Ellen says:

Does anyone have any left over peacock stuff from their wedding they want to get rid of?

19.
Sue says:

My daughter got married March 24, 2007, her bridesmaids dresses were sapphire blue and we used peacock feathers with them. I would share pictures and possibly have some items to sell.

20.
Amanda says:

I am getting married in August of this year and I am also using peacock feathers. Sue I would love to talk to you about some ideas and possibly buying some things from you. My girls are wearing midnight navy dresses and I have ordered wildflowers for them with peacock feathers tucked in. However I am considering getting rid of their flowers altogether and giving them fans made out of feathers instead. We are getting married outside and August is such a hot month!

My wedding was last Saturday and the peacock them worked exceptionally well. Like I mentioned before, we used feathers in our bouquets which turned out beautiful! I’d be happy to share photos if you’d like.

As far as selling anything, everything we did was very inexpensive so I don’t think it would be worth it for you to buy them from me and pay shipping.

23.
Sue says:

With the blue we used the copper and olive colors from the peacock feathers. I made pew bows out of ivory wire edged ribbon and put spikes of copper and olive ribbon in them as well as feathers. For the windows I made candle rings using the ivory, copper and olive ribbon. The bouquets and bouts had peacock feathers in them. At the reception. I used assorted clear vases covered with gold tulle and filled with peacock feathers and gold ting. I used tapestry that had blue, olive and copper in it on the food tables. and copper on the head table and runner for the other tables.

24.
Melody says:

For those of you who used/will use peacock feathers in your weddings, did you make bouquets ONLY with feathers, or did you incorporate flowers also? And if you used flowers, what types did you select? Thanks!

25.
Sue says:

We used in various places with the feathers, cattleya orchids, sweet peas, raniculas, freesia, seeded eucalyptus, bells of Ireland, viburnum, jade roses, and a bronze orchid (not sure of the name of it but it was excellent with the feathers.

Hello lovely ladies! I’m not too sure if anyone is keeping tabs on this conversation but I only stumbled on to it today after searching google. I live in Sydney, Australia and have only recently become engaged. My wedding venue has live peacocks cruising the grounds - a beautiful feature I couldn’t pass. I wanted to incorporate the peacock theme into my special day and have noticed a lot of you have offered to share photo’s but the problem is, I don’t know how to use this site…if that’s what you call it! How do I view pictures or make contact with others to get some great ideas? Thanks a bunch…I hope someone see’s my message :)

Where are you getting married MrsMatysiakToBe?

Amanda says:

Here’s a link to my wedding photos. You can see the bouquets in the Reception section. Everything I did was really simple as far as decorating, just did the pews with a simple bow with feathers out of the top, you can see those in the Ceremony section. I think i have a pic of the invitations I designed too, i’ll try to get that one up too.

Good Morning!

Thanks for sharing your photo’s with us Amanda - they looked fantastic. I loved your bouquets - never thought peacock feathers would work with such colours…but they did! I’ve been inspired…thanks very much!

Hiya Annette - my fiancé and I are getting married at Belgenny Farm, the house of Elizabeth Macarthur. It is a beautiful old rustic farm & vineyard at Camden…really stunning! There’s real warmth to the place and it’s very secluded - perfect setting for an intimate wedding. Have you any ideas for your wedding theme yet?

Hey everyone! I am from the United States and I, too, am planning a peacock themed wedding in December. These have been really helpful.
In my bouquets and centerpieces I only used the peacock feathers as the main focal point and then filled them in with plain black feathers and the black calla lily. Actually, those might be dark purple - it is hard to tell. It really turned out to be gorgeous. Anyone able to find nice invitations with this hteme?

35.
MrsMatysiakToBe says:

Hi Sarah!

There’s a beautfiul range of stationery that includes an image of a peacock feather - I’m considering using it in my invitations. Check it out -

Helloo Ladies,

I am also having a peacock feather-themed wedding, in September 2008. Thanks for all your comments and ideas! They are so helpful. Does anyone else have any pictures of centerpiece ideas?

38.
Sarah says:

I am still working on my centerpieces, so I don’t have any just yet. I will try to get those sent in soon. There have definitely been some great ideas on this page! Someone found a great article in the wedding magazine maybe “creative weddings”? I am not sure of the exact name, but it was the current issue, which may have been June at the time. If anyone finds that issue, would they be willing to mail me a copy? I am in the US and cannot get that magazine here. Of course, I would pay any charges. Help???

39.
Amanda says:

Check out this link for ideas for arrangements http://www.ostrich.com/events/flower.html
depending on your colors, there are some really cool things you can do for centerpieces. I just came across this section of the website and thought you may be interested.

FYI: Go to ostrich.com and sign up for their email list. They have great sales and send you emails for 1/2 off feathers! This is where I purchased my feathers for my wedding and they were beautiful.

40.
MrsMatysiakToBe says:

Hi Sarah,

I will scan and email the images of the peacock theme in creative weddings - I got the magazine last week and the spread was awesome - so gorgeous and bright! There are several pages….I’m sure you’ll be as inspired as I was. I can be contacted at kristynrick@yahoo.com.au if you want to send me a quick email - save us both time and postage costs!

Hello everyone!
I just got engaged on Friday and I am so excited! I have been wanting to encorportate peacock feathers into my theme just like all of you! We’ve been taking about our wedding for awhile not and we know we want something different and I thought this would be perfect! Any photos or Ideas you have would be greatly appreciated!!

42.
Sarah says:

I found thid FANTASTIC cake on http://www.celebratecakes.com at the bottom of the page. If you click on it, it actually gives you a great big picture. I think I might use it or some variation of it. I decided to use short round vases for each table (so guests could see each other) and then make huge over-the-top ones for the food tables and entry table. It looks pretty cool. I will try to get some pics… Also, someone had the idea of putting a peacock feather in the actual invitation - sounds cool. I also went to Hobby Lobby (a craft store) and found peacock feathers that have attachments to make jewelry or hairpieces out of - I am definitely going to do somethign with that! I am wearing a light tan satin gown that matches the inside bronze in the feather and am using the same fabric to drape some of the tables with. I will forward any pics I get on to you. Good luck!

43.
MrsMatysiakToBe says:

Congratulations McCaulie, how very very exciting! Make sure you take the time to enjoy the moment…the initial anticipation is the absolute greatest feeling on earth!

Sarah - sounds like some fabulous ideas - I like the idea of matching the bronze colour of the feathers.

To all the lovely ladies who emailed requests for the Creative Weddings article - I’ve sent it through to you all via email tonight. If I’ve overlooked anybody, I’m terribly sorry - just send me a friendly reminder and I’ll get it off to you straight away :)

Sharing is caring ladies - if anyone has anything please feel free to give us all a squizz :)

Dominique says:

Thanks Kristy for the article! What beautiful ideas! I found a bridesmaids dress website http://www.ariasdress.com
they have a silk swatch called “peacock”, a really regal greenish color. i have decided on this color for my bridesmaids! check it out on the website, under the fabrics section. will take a leaf from sarah’s book and use bronze as an accent color, along with purple and royal blue. Can’t believe it’s starting to really materialize! Keep the ideas coming everyone! Thanks so much!

I am planning an Art Nouveau/Peacock theme wedding. Peacocks are a symbol of fidelity and were a popular motif in the art nouveau period. We are designing peacocks on our invitations and other paper goods. Our monogram is a peacock feather with a G (for our new last name) in the eye of the feather. Our card box is an ornate bird cage and we adhered a large faux peacock (from a crafts store) to the top.

47.
Sarah says:

Great ideas Shannon. I love the birdcage as a box idea. I found a great website at http://www.peacock-blue.com that makes hairpieces and wrist corsages out of feathers. I am having her make me a custom piece with peacock feathers. It is pretty neat. Check it out!

hello creative brides to be! I am getting married in April 08 and I thought my idea of a peacock theme was so orginal! But I am glad there are others to bounce ideas off of!

i actually found a dress for my bridesmaids in a print that resembles the eye of a peacock feather! I am so excited about those.

We are doing real peacock feathers in our invitaions and for bouteniers (sp?) for our grromsmen, in our bouquets, and for our centerpieces.

I would appreciate ANY pics or articles that anyone has to share! email me! Thanks!
megandicamillo@hotmail.com

73.
Sarah says:

I would love to see those bridesmaid dresses if you don’t mind sharing…

Also, I ended up finding peacock invitations at http://www.vistaprint.com that I am using. They are self-printed ones, so they were very inexpensive (I think I got 100 invitations for $80 or so), but when I was finished with them, the script font I used made them look really classy. Very fun!

74.
Cassie says:

I would also love to see the bridesmaid dresses. My wedding is in less than a month. We are doing dresses in teal, green and purple.

I used the design from Vista print as thank you cards and designed my invitations and save the date magnets.

We are using peacock feathers in the bouquets, boutiners and centerpieces. I will be happy to share pictures with whomever, once we get them.

76.
Megan says:

These are my bridesmaids dresses! I absolutely love them and freaked out when I found them in the store. I am also doing solid dresses, same pattern, but haven’t decided which color yet. I am leaning toward a teal and maybe a bronze-ish…any suggestions?
Here is a closer look at the pattern.http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j157/meggyweggy16/mm3.jpg

78.
Nicole says:

Megan,
Your dresses are adorable. They fit your girls so well. I actually tried on a similar dress in orange tones at TJ Maxx (discount store). Where did you find those? I would even like to wear something like that to a shower/rehearsal dinner…..so cute. Keep the pics coming ladies. I am still a year out!
Thanks and best of luck =)

79.
Nicole says:

Sarah,
Can we see your invites?

80.
Ashley says:

Hey Cassie,

Im curious as to what flowers you are using in the bouquet with the feathers? I orginally was going to just use the peacock feathers for our bouquets but decided against that but Im having a hard time thinking of flowers that would compliment the feathers the way they should be.
Let me know if you have any ideas.

Megan, I TOTALLY love those dresses!! Where did you find them??

81.
Ashley says:

Sarah,

I looked on Vista Print and didnt find any invitations with any sort of feathers on them…can I see the ones that you printed?

My sister named one for me if anyone is interested in seeing her version…just drop me an email at amcmahan@kdhe.state.ks.us and I will forward the sample on to you.

82.
Cassie says:

Megan-
I too would love to know where you got your dresses. They are adorable!

Ashley-
I am using white roses, blue hydrangeas and blue delphinium. For the tables I am using fresh potted herbs in pots terra cotta pots that we painted a champagne/bronze color and am putting feathers in the center. I got feathers from ostrich.com. I ordered the shortest ones (10-12) to use the eyes for the boutineres and 18-24 for the bouquets. The shorter they are the smaller the eye is as well. If you want a large eye, go with longer feathers.
I used these bouquets for inspiration:
http://weddings.theknot.com/odb/themes/realweddings/detailview.aspx?id=14315&type=3&wedding_details=Bridal+Bouquets%2cBridesmaid+Bouquets&pageIndex=5&MsdVisit=1
I hope this helps. Once I get pictures I will be happy to share with anyone who is interested.

Cassie

83.
Megan says:

I found the dresses at a store called Group USA. I heard of them through a bridal show, and then went and checked it out. I got those in August. They did have the same pattern in orange tones, Nicole, and I tried it on, because I love this dress! The best part was how inexpensive they were.

Does anyone have any fun ideas for favors involving peacock feathers? Ostrich.com has such cheap ones, I figured why not try to fo something with real feathers…

84.
Cassie says:

We are using potted herbs with feathers sticking out for our centerpieces and then having guests take them home.

Thanks for the info about the bridesmaid dresses.

85.
Dominique says:

Megan,

Kristy once sent me an email of a beautiful magazine spread of tablescapes for one couple’s peacock wedding. Their favors were peacock feather pens. I thought they were really cute. They glued a peacock feather to a ballpoint pen and wrapped the pen with ribbon. Would be happy to forward you the spread if you’d like. I’m having a larger wedding so I’m scaling down on my favors. I’m just going to glue small peacock feathers to the tops of gold matchboxes. Then I’m going to take a few sticks of incense and wrap the box and incense together with a thin teal ribbon.

Oh, and just tried to visit the Group USA website and couldn’t pull it up! :( Was I the only one with this prob??

86.
Dominique says:

Cassie,

Great idea with the potted herbs! My sister did the same thing last weekend at her wedding, but used orchids. They were beautiful, and the guests were really excited to take them home. The one from my table is now in my bathroom!

87.
Ashley says:

No, I had a hard time pullin gup the website too, but I finally got it to work and couldnt locate the dress.
Im just going to call them…Megan, do you remember how much they were?

88.
Sarah says:

Sorry, girls! I got the website wrong above. I can’t keep any of it straight anymore! Here’s the link to the invites…http://www.impressinprint.com/FILE-itemDetails_PID-8877.aspx
They look a little cheesy on the web but they are fantastic! I have recieved a lot of compliments on them. They also have note cards that match and I ordered them blank for the response cards and also with thank you on them for my thank yous.

Also, I found a great dress that I am using as my bridesmaids dresses. I got these in teal, but the flowers and feathers on them are awesom e - it really keeps the theme going.

http://www.cbslimited.com/bridesmaid-dresses/detail_bridesmaid_alyce_designs-1129

I ended up finding a hairpiece to match that I am wearing here:http://www.dragonwings.net/BigPhotos/Sweep1961.htm It was around $20, which is a LOT cheaper than the one I originally found.

At the reception hall, there is an entryway with a table for the guest book and stuff, and I found a vintage poster of a peacock and hung it over the table, then I put a vase with peacock feathers out on the table and in front of it I used a distressed gold frame and put this quote inside it: “The peacock is a symbol of fidelity: when a peacock loses its mate, it is believed to die of grief or live alone the rest of its life before choosing another.”

I used this quote throughout my wedding - my favor is a CD of both our favorite songs, so on the CD I printed a peacock feather, and the cover of the case is this quote again, in script writing. then I tied a feather (a short one I had to cut) around it. It turned out great!

The flowers I used to go along with the feathers are sage colored hydrangeas and roses (fake, of course) and I also added the same flowers in deep purple and a steel bluish color that has the ends tipped darker. I basically used one of each color (they are pretty big) and then filled everything around it with the peacock feathers and I also used some sticks I found at the craft store. Really cool… I will try to get some pics soon. Hope some of this helps!

89.
Megan says:

The dresses were only $50! But you can’t buy them online, actually I don’t even think they are on their website. You can’t order anything form their site. I had to have them search at other stores for the right sizes for my BM’s. But well worth the work!

90.
Ashley says:

Megan,

Would they let you order them at the store or was it you actually had to go and find them ar each individual stores?

91.
Megan says:

Ashley,
I found them at one store, but they didn’t have enough of the sizes I needed. So I spoke to the manager, they called around to their other stores around the country and located the dresses for me and then that particular store shipped them to me. I had to pay extra for the shipping of course.

I am so happy I found this site. My fiancee and I recently got engaged and are wanting a peacock theme for our wedding because his last name is Peacock. We really want a simple but elegant and not outrageously priced wedding. We also don’t want the entire wedding over run with peacock things, basically just the colors and a few feathers. Our colors are going to be Indigo, aqua, bronze, olive and teal. Colorful, I know. Any tips or ideas would be great. Oh, our wedding date is Aug. 8 2008 (8-8-08). Thank you. Trina

94.
Trina says:

Ok, we narrowed down the colors to teal and olive.

Megan says:

I found this dress in my search for more dresses for my bridesmaid. If you are up for printed bridesmaid dresses ( kinda like mine) this is a CUTE CHEAP dress. Check out this link.
Trina, it might be good for your colors…

Michaels.com (and in N. America stores) has a huge assortment of peacock trimmings meant for x-mas, as well as sparkly leaves in teal, royal, silver and gold. Also if you go to http://www.save-on-crafts.com, they have pretty teal sparkle calla lilies. I’ve been looking at getting rhinestone trinket boxes (amazon.com) that have a peacock on them for my bridesmaids. My wedding is going to be in Apr. 2008 and am having navy as my main color with peacock feathers as an accent piece in the centerpieces and flowers/boutenierres. navy invitations with white wording (the rsvp are white so guests can see their writing on them!!) I’m having the reception be very jazz/cabaret oriented with a band that is only going to play frank sinatra style music… pretty psyched! :)

116.
Cassie says:

Megan-

I ordered feathers from ostrich.com. Spent like $30 for close to a hundred feathers. The 10-12 had smaller eyes, which we used for boutiners. I also ordered the 18-20 inch and would recommend those for centerpieces, bouquets, etc. Most of the eyes were a good size and worked great for the centerpieces, bridal and bridesmaid bouquets.

Hey Ladies,
My fiance and I have potponed our wedding and we aren’t setting a new date for a while. This throws a spin on things with my bridesmaids, so I am selling my bmaids dresses and starting over whenever we reset the date.

If you are interested, I am selling them for $50 (plus shipping). I have two dresses, one medium and one small. I was going to have the other girls wear solid dresses that matched the colors in these. Please view the pics and email me at: megandicamillo@hotmail.com if you are interested.

Hi ladies! What great ideas. I’m engaged and our wedding date is October 2008. I’m planning on incorporating peacock and pheasant feathers in my rustic but elegant and kind of organic wedding. Not sure what kind of picture I just painted for you. Right now my ideas for peacock feathers is to use them in the centerpieces along with birch branches. You know, the kind you find in the floral department of a craft store? My BM dresses will be teal. I also found great Christmas ornaments (balls covered in teal peacock feathers) They are gorgeous! Our venue is really rustic (indoor/outdoor) paviliion with lots of wrought iron, wood and granite. Colors will be teal, cream and brown. I want the peacock feathers for the punch of color.

Any information that can be forwarded, the knot article, etc….please help a sister out. I would really appreciate it.
Send to garzagirl@mac.com. I’ll forward any ideas or pictures I can come up with. Thanks to everyone.
