Horse Hair Shampoo

October 2nd, 2006 @ 10:20 am by Mrs. Apple

Has anyone heard of this shampoo, Mane ‘n Tail?

I’ve heard positive feedback about this shampoo. Supposedly, this shampoo makes your hair grow faster, thicker and healthier. Mane ‘n Tail was originally developed for use on horses but word soon spread about the great results it has on human hair. I’m still a little apprehensive, I mean come on - horse shampoo?

As I get older, I’ve noticed how my hair doesn’t grow as fast and it’s not as thick as it used to be. I know age is a factor but it worries me to see 10-15 loose hairs in my bathroom tub everytime I shower! Due to my partial lazieness, I never blow dry my hair (just air dry), I rarely straighten my hair, and most of the time I don’t even brush it. So it can’t be due to any of those factors.

I’ve been wanting to grow my hair out for the wedding but it’s taking forever. It’s been 6 months since I’ve stopped cutting my hair short. I’ve just been trimming and it’s maybe 2 inches longer. I haven’t decided what I would like to do for my hairstyle on the wedding day, but I’d like the option to do either all up or all down without any hair length issues.

I read Jennifer Aniston & Sarah Jessica Parker uses Mane ‘n Tail too. Me want some pretty long hair some day. :)

What are your thoughts on Mane ‘n Tail, any users?

PRE-NATAL (spelling?) vitamins!!!!!!!!! Ask your doc first though. I take them and within a week, my nails were growing faster and thicker and my hair was shiny and looked healthier. It was too early to see it grow. But after a couple weeks, my hair did grow faster. You can buy them in the vitamin section.

I tried this mane n’ tail shampoo - (which surprisingly smells okay) & it didn’t really help me at all (but I have fine hair). My hair is shoulder length & I want it to be LONG LONG LONG for my wedding…I stopped using it can’t hurt to give it a try…I also take pre-natal vitamins which are makin my nails grow like crazy but not my hair..however I am seeing less hair in the shower now…

i don’t use mane ‘n’ tail but i do recommend brushing your hair at least! i never did this either (i actually got a hair brush as a gift in college from a friend who was evil and hilarious), but the occasional brushing made a huge difference — redistribute oil, stimulate scalp and brushed out old, dry hair.

Actually, not brushing your hair could be one of the reasons it’s falling out. I have curly hair, so I rarely brush it and a lot falls out. I asked my hairdresser and she said that could be the reason :)

i used mane and tail shampoo when i was a kid, i don’t remember it making my hair grow faster.

i’ll have to try taking vitamins (i don’t take any vitamins, i just can’t remember to do it!), that’s a good suggestion.

my friend has the same issue w/ her hair & nail. her doctor suggest taking “TUMS” and eating more almonds (anything w/ high fiber).

I used Mane N Tail when I was younger. I don’t really remember it speeding up hair growth, but I enjoyed the results I got from it. I think I stopped using it when I started coloring my hair. But I agree that part of the reason that it may seem like you are losing a lot of hair is because the hairs you should normally lose throughout the day aren’t being brushed away until you shower. I have a handful of loose hair when I comb after my shower, but I still have just as much hair as I’ve always had.

I’ve been growing out my hair for the past year, and I have only gotten in trimmed once. I know that’s not very healthy, but most people’s hair grows 1/2 inch per month, and trims seem like they are about a 1/4 inch, so you might be able to double your hair growth if you can stand to not trim it.

It wouldn’t hurt to try Main N Tail but I think it’s important to have a balanced diet and definitely take your vitamins =)

I’ve been growing my hair out for two years now (since a horrible hair modeling gig gone awry) and everyone has told me to use it now that my hair is a bit longer. Some of my friends swear by it, but they already have gorgeous long flowing thick hair to start!

On average you lose 100 hairs a day. If you have curly hair, you’ll sometimes notice more, since loose hairs will be stuck in the curls after they’ve fallen out. It’s totally normal. 10-15 hairs in the shower is nothing to worry about.

Also, this is great shampoo.

I agree with others that the shampoo can’t hurt, but DEFINITELY try vitamins. Pre-natal, or I also noticed a difference when I was taking the GNC brand of “Hair, Skin & Nails”. Good luck!

How much time do you have before the wedding? Because, it sounds silly, but this worked for me: I cut my long hair to almost chin-length. My hair was then so healthy and shiny, that it grew extremely fast (like never before)! It’s been about a year now, and it’s about four inches till reaching my waist.

Other tips that may have contributed to my fast hair growth… I never used combs or brushes. I used my fingers to brush my hair (my brush just yanked away hair and broke it). I used gentle shampoos and expensive (but totally worth it…my hair feels like silk, and there are literally NO split ends) conditioners. I stopped blow-drying almost all together and other treatements that fry my hair. After shampooing, I use a gentle hair oil (it doesn’t leave my hair greasy or anything, just softer) to keep the frizz at bay, but if I really need hold, I use a gel. I avoid tying my hair up with anything that may break it (hair sticks will become your new best friend). I also stopped dying my hair. I haven’t trimmed since last December.

These are good tips for healthier hair… I mean, I personally think long hair is ugly if it is unhealthy, with ugly ends full with split ends…it totally kills the beauty of long hair.

Also..you need vitamis, of course. Healthy diet, lots of sleep.

Hope it helps. :-)

hm… thanks for the info… i don’t really brush my hair too often (hopefully that doesn’t sound gross) but it does make since that it redistribute oil, stimulate scalp and brushed out old, dry hair.

I don’t know if it is the golden solution to your specific problem, but I can assure you there is nothing to fear about the product. I was intrduced to it over 10 years ago….

I shed like crazy too. The longer my hair gets the more I shed. [I lose handfuls in the shower... it's alarming]. and I don’t really brush my hair either. I feel like I’m breaking the ends…… Mane & Tail also has a hoofmaker lotion [for the hoof of horse... or human fingernails. Not the best smelling, but great if you have brittle nails like me]

I started shedding about 2 months ago— so much hair loss, for no reason! Everyone told me it was stress… even the doctors. I told them the only thing stressing me was my damn hair falling out. With my wedding in October, I was ready to try anything. I was turned on to Nioxin- http://www.nioxin.com You can only buy it at salons. I usedit for about 2 weeks while wearing my hair up to stop it from falling out too much. When I started wearing it down again, people kept telling me how long and thick my hair looked. It did dry my hair a bit, and I used an additional conditioner to keep it healthy looking, but I’d swear by it. It also comes with a vitamin supplament with nutrients for healthy hair and nails.
Good Luch!

from my experience, pre-natal vitamins work for both nails and hair. also, massaging your scalp every night for a little bit is suppose to help it grow too. my friend uses that same horse shampoo and she loves it. she’s used it forever and her hair looks sooo healthy. i personally use Matrix Silk and Shine. after my bad perm and chemical straightening, it recovered my hair pretty quick. i’m gonna keep using it forever and ever. good luck! your bud…kat =)

I’m a cosmetology student and they have taught us that were supposed to lose on average 150 hairs a day. I have curly hair and it seems like I lose a lot more but thats because of my hair texture. I’ve tried Mane and Tail but it just left my hair in horrible condition. If you really want to grow your hair out Pre-Natal Vitamins really do work for hair and nails. Also keep your hair healthy because if you don’t keep it healthy it wont look good when you get it long. Sun damages hair like bleach does so keep your hair protected when you go outside and Redken hair products are amazing. (they don’t smell the best but their one of the few companys that really know what they are doing)

Hi, I haven’t used the mane and tail shampoo, but I’m currently using GNC hair, skin, and nails program and GNC hair, skin, and nails formula. Its working great for me as far as my nails. I got a terrible haircut 2 weeks ago so i haven’t seen any difference in my hair growth.
I’m hopeful though!

Has anyone ever used any one of these two?

thanks

Hi Barbara! Just going through older posts and saw this. I totally use this! How funny. I started it about 8 months ago and STILL have it because it is so humongous (granted, I did switch in a couple of different shampoos ’cause this one was taking so long)… I started using it because, like you, someone told me it would make my hair grow faster. The verdict? Eh… I don’t know if it really helps or not. My hair is just slow growing I think. But the smell’s not bad at all and at this rate I probably won’t have to buy shampoo for another few months so it’s a definite money saver. Haha.

I had a roommate who worked with horses and used this stuff (he also had the conditioner), and I thought it was hilarious. Then my shampoo ran out and I was in a bind, so I used his, and wow! It does smell really good, and it really conditions well too. I became a believer. Horses’ tails and manes need to be pretty for shows, why not for human hair? After all, most wigs are made of horse hair anyway.

As far as making your hair grow faster, I think it plays more to the fact that if it’s conditioning really well, your roots will be well nourished and ends aren’t breaking as much.

At my last hair appt, my salon guy recommended Phytophare (sp?) vitamins for faster growing hair and nails. Totally spendy, but I was curious. Sold them to me right there in the store. And in a month and a half, I’ve noticed a positive difference - my hair is softer, my natural highlights are really shining through, and I’m noticing a lot less damage root to tip. Not so sure I’m going to replenish the supply once this runs out, but I was glad to try something different.

Im the 5th hairstylist in my family…

and one thing i will never repeat in the salon is this: take ANY conditioner (although I sweat by RedKen heavy cream with avocado oils..it’s amazing!!) that seems like it has a thicker more nuritioning consistancy to it, run it through your hair in the shower scalp to ends, but really focus on stimulating your scalp…DO NOT rinse. When you get out of the shower, put your hair up in a shower cap, use a blowdryer and put it to the shower cap (to stimulate heat and moisture from the conditioner..usually only takes about 30-45 seconds). Let your hair sit in the shower cap for as long as you can stand then rinsing out and styling as normal.

You’re hair will never be so soft or shinny! And the greatest thing about it, you just gave yourself a deep conditioning treatment!!

NOT cutting your hair will only cause your hair to grow with shattered ends…aka unhealthy looking hair. TRIM every 4-6 weeks…even if you tell your hair stylist to just “NIP” the ends…it’s vital to growing STRONG HEALTHY hair… After all, what’s pretty about long stragly looking ends? Your hair will grow faster because the ends will be blunt and strong, not splitting and shattering up the strand of hair.

SO, condition, take daily vitamins and trim your hair every 4-6 weeks…your hair will be gorgeous!

I actually just bought mane and tail….I cant really tell you if it helps with hair growth but it’s doing wonders to my hair…..so soft and even if it doesn’t speed it up the hair growth I think it helps in different ways,no slipt ends, stronger hair, ect, ect…… I do know that vitimans and sleep is essential for hair growth

I have always loved and used Mane ‘n Tail. Works wonderfully. Regarding pre-natal vitamins…. they are wonderful however NOT recommended for women who are not pregnant. They contain excess vitamins, minerals ect. which are absorbed and needed by the growing baby but is too much for a non-pregnant woman to filter and digest and can actually cause damage to the kidneys and liver. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE speak to your OB/GYN before taking these vitamins if your not pregnant.

I use it..have for years..my kids use it and my husband uses it. We have an Equine Rescue and use only Mane ‘n Tail on all the horses! It will make your hair healthy, softer and shiney too.
Mane ‘n Tail found that people loved the product and were using it on themselves (humans!) so they began making Mane ‘n Tail for people. It’s a good product, but we still prefer the original made for horses. Wouldn’t use anything else…..EVER!

Prenatal Vitamins?? Yep..that works to help grow longer hair. Been there, done that too!

Good luck and Best Wishes!

I am a cometologist, and I have been trying to grow my hair out for about three months. I highly recommend Nioxin shampoo. It is made to stimulate the scalp, and is proven to create a thickening effect with the hair! It also helps the hair to be stronger, and grow longer. Great product, I recommend it to all my clients. I also take the GNC hair nails and vitamins pills, they’re great, GNC also sells Biotin pills, which is the main thing that makes hair grow.
good luck :)

A Dominican lady w/xtremely long, gorgeous hair recommended Mane n’Tail products. I’v been usin it 4 3 yrs & luv it! I noticed a difference n my hair w/in 1-2 mos of using it my hair is so much longer. I don’t no about Afro-Carribean hair but my hair is very cury. My ancestry is African- Native American. I didn’t care 4 the deep moisturizing shampoo either. I prefer “The Original” shampoo & I alternate btw the “Deep Moisturizing” & “The Original” conditioner. I use them both as leav in conditioners. Initially, I used the herbal hair grow every day & it had the similar effect of a gel. A pinch of it wld flatten/tame my hair. I don’t use it as much now because I prefer the fluffy look. I recently tried the Replenishing conditioner..also as a leave in. It feels surprising thin, when I put it n my wet hair but my hair drys so soft! I don’t use it very often ’cause it doesn’t giv me the full fluffy look that I crav.

1 last thing U shld no is that I let my hair dry naturally. I hope this helps:)
