Open Question: Outdoor Weddings

October 2nd, 2006 @ 1:22 pm by Open Question

Outdoor weddings: How does the bride do her entrance? (In a public park, there are no really good “hiding” places).

Also, what is the scoop on aisle runners? I have heard of people who loved them, and people who had them blow all over the place. Any other advice on outdoor weddings would be good, too! We are doing the reception indoors, so that eliminates some things (like the need for a tent.)

I’m having an outdoor ceremony. My wedding planner strongly discouraged an aisle runner on grass b/c people will trip over it - unless you put planks down underneath.

As far as where to make an entrance, I’ve seen a wedding where the bride got ready in a trailer in a parking lot and made her entrance from that. It doesn’t sound very glam, but it worked!

Or you can come from the reception room?

I like that trailor idea. Especially if you had an old retro silver trailor and added a little sign to the door “Bride” declaring you as the proper celebrity that you are that day.

You could get some rugs to throw down on the grass or gravel (whatever the case may be). We had bamboo rugs and they worked perfectly for our style. I am sure you could find something great on ebay.

Instead of aisle runners, you can do stuff like flower petals or outline the aisle with things like pebbles, hurricane candle holders, or even potted plants, (which can pose as double duty for decor or even favors). Another neat idea is to have those outdoor garden hooks that hold hanging plants, and instead of plants, you can decorate it with flower balls, ribbon or even tulle.

As for your entrance, you can put something like a garden arch with large pots of plants on either side to make a distinctive doorway. Even if people see you arriving, it gives you a way to make a grand entrance without actually having doors open (and pausing before passing through would give people plenty of photo ops)!

I’m glad you asked this question because my ceremony is outside (and EXACTLY 2 months from today!!!!) and I hadn’t given this much thought…I know I am definitely staying away from an aisle runner but I was thinking about petals or stones or even luminarias. We do have some little foot bridges leading to the site so we may use them as an “aisle” depending on the amount of snow.

on the trailer idea- do you know anyone you could borrow a pop-up camper or one of those old-folks mobile homes? this would work to get ready in if it wasn’t super hot outside.

if you absolutely want an aisle runner, you can rent a cloth runner, which is a thick heavy cotton material. usually they are really expensive to rent and not every flower shop will own a cloth runner b/c they are a lot of maintenance and it’s expensive to clean them.

i’m having an outdoor ceremony, and my mom really wants a runner, so we’re going to use a disposable runner. but then have a few of my girl friends layer heaps and heaps of rose petals down, right after the runner is unrolled by the ushers to weigh it down and prevent it from flying around - it will be added into the ceremony, and they will have baskets and baskets of rose petals.

A friend of mine got married in the town square of a small town. A vintage care picked her up from where she was a getting ready ( an old western saloon type place) and drove her to the aisle as her entrance.

At my outdoor wedding a couple of weeks ago the grass was a bit wet and the ground a little soupy from previous rain. We used pieces of plywood covered in fabric as our aisle runner.
As for my entrance we lucked out b/c the park had a little sidewalk off to the side that I entered from. The sidewalked curved so I was able to “hide” from everyone before my entrance.

In a couple of weddings we did with our horse and carriage we picked the bride up a few blocks or so away from the park and drove her to the wedding site, arriving just as it was time for her to walk down the aisle. Makes for great pictures.

Camper? You gotta be kidding me, aint no way that would work, for me! LOLOL A regular car/SUV/van even would be fine compared to a camper, good grief people! LOL I mean that doesn’t make sense though to me to pay that much money for a big clunky thing when an SUV might look LOT CLEANER get what Ia m saying here :)? Wow I am not dissing the person who actually had done this wacky idea, but bottom line for anyone else to try this is wacky. It may have worked for that person but cannot definitely work for every other who tries it next. ugh I wish we had a sidewalk from the parking lot to the isle with hideouts but um that’s not happening lol.
