Freeze Dried Petals

October 3rd, 2006 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Bird of Paradise

I ordered samples of freeze dried petals from Flyboy Naturals and Petal Garden to make sure we wanted to go this route instead of fresh petals for our petal-tossed-exit.

On the left is Glad Tidings rose petals from Flyboy Naturals. I chose this red because it said it went well with black magic roses, which we’ll be having as centerpieces. On the right is the Burgundy Premium rose petals from Petal Garden.

Sample of one cup from Flyboy Naturals = $5.25
Sample of two cups from Petal Garden = $5.00

Our florist quoted $150 for fresh petals, but I’m not sure how many petals his quote included. We are having roughly 100 guests.

8 Cups (1/2 cup = 1 person) of Glad Tidings from Flyboy Naturals = $19.99
8 Cups (1/2 cup = 1 person) of Burgundy Premium from Petal Garden = $16.95

Petal Garden also has the option of adding rose fragrance to the freeze dried petals, since they lose their scent through the freezing process. I chose this option for the sample. However, when the samples arrived, they both seemed to have some scent. Petal Garden’s was a little stronger.

Decision Made! Petal Garden was not only cheaper, and more fragrant but the petals were monsters compared to Flyboy’s penny-sized petals. I must add that I do not know the size or quality of any other petals either place offers other than the two I sampled.

I did the same thing - bought petals from both. I was quite horrified at flyboy’s high prices/tiny quantity. I went with Petal Garden too.

Petal garden’s look fantastic! Makes flyboy look like quite a ripoff, eh?

Oooh, this is a great idea. Thanks! How do you think they compare in look / feel to fresh petals?

arbela- the websites say that you just store them, not to worry about keeping the refrigerated or anything. and actually my humid area is suppose to be good for them. they soften with humidity. petal garden says they ship the petals 2 wks. before the date needed.

miss lily- they don’t feel like fresh petals- but they are suppose to soften (read above). overall they pretty much look like them. i like that you don’t have to keep them refrigerated. i’ve heard fresh petals can be a hassle since they wilt so easily. plus they don’t stain your dress like the real ones can.

That’s so weird! My flyboy petals were really large. Then again, they were mixed peony/hydrangea/roses. Hm . . . .

A few weeks ago, I was MOH in my friends’ wedding. She had bought approx $100 in freeze dried petals from Petal Garden. They were decent quantity, but $100 got her a VERY VERY small box. Then she also bought about $130 in fresh roses from Costco (we DIY’d all the bouquets and boutenniers), and with all the leftover roses, we pulled them apart for use as rose petals. Those were MUCH more effective, fresher, and prettier than the freeze dried petals. And there were alot MORE of them too!! So if you have time, maybe you could go the same route… roses from Costco are cheap - 2 dozen for $15 - and they are good quality. Just buy them 3 days in advance so they have a chance to fully bloom. And also, place the order in advance with Costco. Ok, this was longer than I intended… =)

Flyboy Naturals has a big 15th Anniversary sale. All of the prices are lower for 2007. And there’s like 100 colors or something to choose from. Plus I like they have more than just rose petals, other petals like hydrangea & peony petals.

Yeah, I ordered sampels from both Flyboy Naturals and Petals Garden also. Some of the Flyboy petals are smaller but not all of them. One of the petal samples I ordered called “Bewitched” is much larger than Petal Gardens petals and it felt softer too. We ended up ordering all of our petals from FLYBOY. The Petal Garden petals did not fit into our cones, they were too big. Flyboy has all sizes of petals, we used a medium to smaller size petal for our cones (you get alot more petals in a cup when they are smaller too) and they the bigger petals for our table and aisle. They were gorgeous!

The other reason we went with Flyboy Naturals is they grow all there own roses for the petals right here in the USA. They don’t import them from another country. That alone is a great reason to order from them. We found the prices to be better then Petal Garden and they have really great customer service too. I told all of my girlfriend to order from them. I am going to order from them for a romantic celebration of our first anniversary. I can’t wait!
