Is This a Joke?

October 3rd, 2006 @ 1:19 pm by Mrs. Spider

I have been too upset to blog about this but disaster struck yesterday.

5 days from my wedding, the Sheraton hotel calls to say they have a “little problem.”

Apparently renovations caused extensive flooding and they can no longer honor any of our group’s rooms.

OMG~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The makeup artists, hair stylists, flowers and limos have all been arranged to arrive at the hotel the morning of. The rehearsal dinner is at a restaurant steps away for the night before.

They are suggesting that I move everyone to the motel down the road. They want me to stay at a motel on the wedding night.

NO OTHER COMPENSATION.

OMG.

I can’t tell you how sad I am for you. I know nothing about the legality of what they are doing to you, but perhaps you can bring your contract to a lawyer (or a friend that’s a lawyer) to see about compensation. It seems very wrong that they can back out like that. If there is anything any of us can do to help, let us know!!!

Miss Blueberry says:

Oh my gosh Miss Spider! I’m so sorry ::hugs:: I wish I had a solution for you :-( Hopefully some of our other wonderful Bees and readers can help you figure this out.

3.
Amber says:

Miss Spider, this is ridiculous. No other compensation?? Are they joking?? You definitely need to see a lawyer to go over your contract (unfortunately, contracts are usually biased toward the hotel…) still, it can’t hurt. This is so sad, I’m so sorry!!

4.
Miss Bluebell says:

OHMYGOD!!!! I am soooo sorry Miss Spider!!!!! I agree that you should have a lawyer take a look at that contract b/c “the motel down the road” does NOT sound like an acceptable replacement to me!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

5.
YuMMie says:

No compensation?! Motel?! They got to be joking right? I’m so sorry about this Miss Spider but I wouldn’t just let this go so easily, I would definitely hire a lawyer… but 5 days to your wedding date, I would drop this for the time being and look for a hotel nearby ASAP. Btw, are you talking about the Flushing Sheraton?

6.
Katydid says:

OMG! That is BS!

First, you need another fabulous place to stay. Do you have any ideas? If you need help calling/finding places, I’d be happy to help you, as I’m sure many others would too. Email me.

Second, do you have a contract with them? My guess is that if you do they’ve adequately covered themselves in it. Nonetheless, you should carefully read it over to see if they will, at the very least, make up for the price difference if there is one.

This is very upsetting, I’m so sorry you have to contend with this, but don’t worry … it will all work out. Hang in there.

oh no thats terrible! good luck miss spider!

How horrible!! I hope you can get everything worked out. Good luck! =(

9.
Jayme says:

oh no. that’s horrible. i hope you find a way to make it all work out. sadness

jen says:

That’s horrible!!! I’m so sorry you have to deal w/ all that stress. You should try talking to the event coordinator’s manager. Its not right that they didn’t find another solution for you!

11.
Jane says:

that’s horrible! i agree with everyone who said you should consult a lawyer. you might also want to try contacting the main corporate office for sheraton hotels and the corporate office for their parent company, starwood. (starwood also owns hotels like westin and meridien so maybe you can work something out! ;) )

turtle says:

During one of our family vacations, we stayed at a Sheraton. We had some issues, so they really helped us out and offered us other places to stay, etc. Sheraton is a large hotel chain, so like Jane said above, they should be able to accomodate somehow. They have to!

13.
kp says:

I agree with Jane - although I know it would be a pain to find a hotel at another location(there aren’t many within Flushing) as well as rebooking the drop-off/pick-up location for he florist, limo, and etc…I think you should contact mgmt. and clarify their duty to compensate you - the least they could do it re-book rooms at a sister location possibly near LGA? - but a BIG NONO to the motel down the street. sigh. I hope it all works out Miss Spider!!!

creme_de_violet says:

I agree with the others in contacting corporate office. Threaten publicity with the stunt that they pulled! I can’t believe they referred you to the motel down the street. Ridiculous!

weddingwishes says:

that’s awful!!!!!!

snowbride says:

Ok, I used to work for a hotel company-this is a huge no no!
First off, did you have any sort of contract or negotiated rate for the rooms? If so, read it again-there may be a blurb in there about cancellation-if so, they are resposible for making you other arrangements. They are cancelling on you 5 DAYS (!) before!?!?
If not, you must call there corporate office and let them know and demand some sort of compensation or at least a better option.
I am assuming these plans/reservations were made quite a while ago, right?
Definitely push the issue-it isn’t fair and they have inconvenienced not only you but guests and other vendors with almost no notice! That is a disgrace! I am so sorry!

lauren says:

miss spider, so sorry to hear this!! that’s unbelievably unprofessional of them. nonetheless, i think your wedding will still be beautiful, with or without the Sheraton.

18.
Gin says:

I’m so sorry to hear this Miss Spider. My cousin recently went to see them about doing her wedding there and the manager was 20 mins late for their initial appointment!! She was told that the person in charge was nowhere to be found and she would have to wait. Of course my cuz left after waiting around for 20 mins. The lady then called her 10 mins after she left (30 mins total!) and my cuz didn’t bother to pick up her call. Of course, my cuz decided to pass on the venue before she even saw the place because that kind of professionalism plays a large factor on such an important event of a lifetime. Good luck Miss Spider!

Mrs. Bee says:

i’m sooooooo sorry you have to go thru this so close to your wedding. please let me know if there is anything I or weddingbee can do! We’ll rally behind you!

21.
Chrissie says:

Miss Spider, what if you got all of weddingbee to raise hell for you? We could all e-mail them OR you could just let them know that you write for this Web site with X number of hits per day, and you will be sharing your experience with your readers. Just an idea…

22.
Becky says:

I agree with Chrissie - Even one or two designated people passing along the word that they have ruled out even considering this hotel would speak volumes. If one or two don’t work, you’ve got over a hundred people that I’m sure would cooperate.

Don’t let them ruin this - let this give you BETTER. You chose THEM out of multiple companies and locations and they have taken that and, due to circumstances that are out of both yours and their control, have let you down. It’s not a gift to you to put you somewhere of less importance/class - it’s an insult. They HAVE to understand that at the end of the day!!

23.
bruinchiq says:

I’m ready to haise heck against the evil hotel people - just tell me who to send a note to and I’m writing it! :( OOOOOHHHHH!!!!! It makes me sooooo mad to know that you have to deal with this at all… let alone RIGHT NOW!

24.
H says:

seriously, i think weddingbee would all rally behind you…:)

25.
Aim says:

Oh no! So sorry to hear about this. But we will support you. Good luck!

26.
Naseem says:

That is a bunch of BS! They should be ashamed of themselves. I am so sorry you have to go through this so close to your wedding date.

You shouldn’t let them get away with this…
Weddingbee is behind you all the way!!

27.
YuMMie says:

If nothing works, we should have an online petition for this http://www.petitiononline.com/

28.
jennifer says:

miss spider- i think the conjunctive hell-raising/rallying is a good idea. Sheraton needs to know that they have not only lost one customer but all the brides-to-be and brides-to-be friends/family as well. i would totally boycott their hotel chain as a result of what happened to you and would advise others to avoid the same. there are so many other venues in nyc that we don’t need to tolerate such blatant disrespect and inconsideration.

29.
Carrie says:

So sorry to hear this!! When you do complain, either before or after the wedding, be sure to tell them you write for weddingbee, and you are going to personally see to it that all brides who visit this site know about their incompetence and unwillingness to help you.

C says:

UGH. just horrible!!! let us know what you need!
