Open Question: Pomanders

October 3rd, 2006 @ 11:13 am by Open Question

My fiance has her heart set on having Pomanders at our wedding, but the things that are holding us back are the cost as well as what we can do with them after the ceremony. She is looking to have one hanging off the end of row chairs, every other row. In total this would be around 16 Pomanders. There is no place to hang them off the walls or ceiling in our reception location (indoors).

I have found that there are affordable silk flower Pomanders as well, but don’t know if they look as stunning as a real flower Pomander would. We are interested in hearing any feedback on possible uses for Pomanders after the ceremony, and if anyone has experience with silk flower Pomanders!

-Travis

no advice on pomanders, but I have a question for readers about thank you cards. I would like to use TY cards using a wedding picture (purchased from shutterfly) and yet I am receiving gifts now (before the wedding). I know etiquette says I need to send out TY cards now. So should I wait for the cute wedding pic card that people who can’t come to the wedding will enjoy or just send out a plain thank you card now?

We are doing cranberry pomanders. It is easy to prick a pin thru the crandberry into the styrophone and they can be way ahead of time. Cranberries are coming into season!

we are using tissue paper pomanders at our ceremony, kind of like those by kenziekate. we will diy those (including at least on dry run at a baby shower!).

in order to keep costs down, we will keep them small and use them strategically (alternate paper pomander with plain chinese lantern, hanging off aisle chairs only, at staircase landings only).

there will be many little children at the reception; they will get to keep them (if their parents say it’s okay!).

If you definitely want real flower pomanders and don’t know what to do with them after the ceremony…

1. Give them away to “special guests” as bonus favors ie:grandma, flower girls, aunts, moms, etc

2. Hang one or two off the back of the bride and groom chairs during the reception.

3. Incorporate them into your reception decoration - even if it’s inside. If they’re not too heavy you could hang them on some branches that are arranged nicely in a vase on the cake cutting table.

4. Depending on what they’re constructed out of, would it be possible to insert some kind of stick into the center of them, and make a sort of “pomander lollipop” or other such object that could be used as a table centerpiece?

5. This may be ambitious on your wedding day (hey I’m just brainstorming here) but could be a task assigned to a bridesmaid/mother/aunt/ other helper - find out if there are hospitals in the area that accept flower donations and have someone deliver them there the next day.

Personally I would choose paper pomanders, for their versatility and reusability. If you LOVE LOVE LOVE real flower pomanders though, maybe you could get 8 real flower ones, and 8 paper ones, then you would feel like you’re wasting less.

Hope this helps and good luck!

PS, is it just me, or does everyone else love that a guy posted this? Way to get involved Travis!

You can reuse your pomanders from the ceremony. If you take the pomanders and put them on tall candle holders they can be come your tall arrangements for your reception. I have pictures - I just don’t have them on this computer! I will try and post them later today.

I personally think that pomanders with real flowers are nicer but I understand that they are expensive! But if you can re-use them - it may be worth it. I re-used my pomanders by placing them on my fireplace, bar area and cake table. I only had 6 though.

i almost forgot! my mom has a friend who made her some christmas pomanders using SOAP as the base; she stuck silk flowers and gorgeous ribbon into the soap using straight pins.

they’re rectangular rather than round, but very cute. we use them as sachets during the year and hang them on doorknobs during xmas.

I’ve made silk rose pomanders for my good friend’s wedding last year (I was a BM), and the guests didn’t notice that it was made of silk roses. Best part is that it doesn’t even take a long time to make, and ends up costing way less than ready made ones. The good thing about it is that it handles much better than real ones, which are pretty delicate in nature. (The bride’s grandmother loved it so much that she sent it off to use as decor at another granddaughter’s wedding!)

My mom made silk flower arrangements for the pews at my sister’s wedding. They were the nicest decorations I’ve seen at a church and were super practical. I’d go that route. Or reusing fresh pomanders at the reception in the centerpieces as someone else suggested.
