Gift Registries

October 4th, 2006 @ 5:35 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

We registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond and JCPenney shortly after we got engaged. At first our registries were filled with “fun” items — not one but four pillows shaped like Batmobiles, a speaker that doubles as an ottoman, etc. (guess whose idea that was? hehe). Since, we’ve revised the registries somewhat so they now consist of the more mature, expected items — things we really want and need, even if they’re not as cool or exciting.

I go back and check them out every few weeks — we’re not expecting people to have bought any gifts yet, but I like to go through and make sure I still like what we registered for, etc.

But as time passes, I have increasing uncertainty. The apartment we have now is definitely a college apartment — full of hand-me-down furniture and no real decorating scheme. But I’ve already got ideas about how to decorate our future home — color palettes, styles, etc. For things I’m not as certain about, though, I’m afraid that many of the things we registered for may not fit with the home and style we actually eventually have.

Is anyone else experiencing these thoughts? My thoughts now are that the registry is pretty much at a point we’re happy with — there aren’t too many decorative accents or things that wouldn’t fit into any style. And just in case we do receive things that won’t work for whatever reason, I suppose we could make exchanges for something else. There are several things on the registries that I can’t wait to have — the Le Creuset cookware, the gorgeous blue bedding set, etc.

Where did you register? How long did it take you to finalize your registry selections (or is it still a work-in-progress)? Do you think guests will use the registry, and do you think you’ll get to keep most of the things you receive?

We just registered this past weekend (the wedding is in July but we are hoping to get our registry items as christmas gifts)! We registered for things that we plan on keeping for our entire marriage (except for some really useful items like appliances and bakeware). I really feel that wedding gifts are a sign of affection from our guests and therefore, should be around for the long-term to help us remember our wedding day & all the love we felt.

we are getting a married a year from now, and *crossed fingers* are hoping to build a new house in a few months. in which case a registry would be perfect timing for decor and such.

(sidenote: Where in KC are you? my FI wants me to move there! We were just there a couple mths ago. It’s been put on hold for now, but it could still be an option! I was excited when i saw you were from KC!)

my thoughts exactly! we decided to do no decor items and shoot for dinnerware, drinkware, flatware & pots. we basically are just upgrading our kitchen. we reg. for a couple of white sheet sets since we can use them now, but no other bedding that would require a room scheme. i don’t want to be stuck with something that won’t work in our future home.

I’m wondering the exact same thing — my FI and I don’t live together currently and we will be getting a new place together after we get married. I’m not sure WHAT our new place will look like - since we haven’t even started looking! So how do I know what colors I’ll want for dishes and all that? I’m so confused. :(

ha, you are lucky you know what your eventual style will be! I’m just trying to keep to neutrals on our registry b/c I’m clueless and hapless about home decor. after the wedding, I’ll have time to get into it, or so i say.

We registered at Macy’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Crate and Barrel. A few helpful hints: at Crate and Barrel, if you get anything you don’t need, you can return them for CASH. I also heard a rumor that if you register at Bloomingdales, if after the wedding, there’s anything you didn’t get from the registry, you can buy them yourself at a discount. I’m not sure if this is true….but it’s worth checking out.

Registering has been one of the tougher parts of the “engagement process” for my fiance and I. We registered at Bed Bath and Beyond and Target and we’re pretty happy with both of them. I hope you get the things you want and need!

And I check it daily… hee hee ;)

Is anyone not registering for gifts? I don’t know how frequently people don’t register, i.e. will the guests EXPECT me to register. The last wedding I was invited to had the registry stamped right on the invite.
I’m debating whether or not to do it since it seems like a big time committment, and we aren’t really inviting anyone that we don’t know well enough that couldn’t ask us what we wanted if they couldn’t find something themselves.

We registered at BBB but a very small registry with all basic stuff. We had to keep adding more things as guests bought things off the registry - it was definitely a work in progress up to the end.

If you are uncertain, register for neutrals or a style you love. Your can always decorate a new kitchen/dining room to compliment a dish patten or a bedroom around a particular sheet set.

BBB also lets you return for cash. My friend’s husband is a manager at BBB and he told me that about a month or so ago this couple came in with a car load of their registry items to return (they kept a tea kettle and a trash can) and ended up getting about $6000 back. The store didn’t have that kind of cash so they had the corporate office mail a check.

i’m also going through some registry angst! We dont really “need” the standard appliances and dishes, but I can’t find anyone “different” to register (other than BBB, C&B, etc.) and we dont want to do an HM registry. Does anyone have any ideas for fun, different registries? Thanks so much!
