About Mrs. Lily

Arf

October 5th, 2006 @ 1:52 pm by Mrs. Lily

From time to time, Mr. Lily and I doggie-sit for a friend’s pooch (she’s here now! aw!). This only feeds my desire for a pet. I keep asking Mr. Lily for a puppy, but he (the logical one) says, “Are you nuts? We live in a studio!” and then I back down on my puppy requests because I know it’s just not the right space to train a little one. Still, I want one desperately! Mr. Lily offered to jump on me and lick my face when I walk in the door, but it’s just not the same…

Taking care of the dog has made me wonder about other engaged couples’ pet status.

We’ve got two cats–our sweeties :-)

I really really really want a dog, too. But Mr. Blueberry won’t let me have one either. :-( Something about our apartment being to small. Hmmph. He promises we can have one once we’ve got a bigger place, though, which I hope is the case.

Hehehe, I love the sound effects Miss Lily! And when we were visiting my aunt & uncle a few weeks ago they had a puppy and I just literally carried him EVERYWHERE (like in family group portraits even though he’s not my puppy) because he was the cutest thing ever!! I waaant ooone!!! Luckily when we got home our kitten was still the (other) cutest thing ever, so I still get my cuteness fix. :-) But I totally would be one of those crazy pet-ladies with 20 of them if Mr. Bluebell didn’t keep me in check!!

we have two guinea pigs and they are the most adorable animals ever. they only understand japanese and korean though so our friends who speak english can only call them over by their names. plus they are small so they take up little space :)

we have discussed dogs, and disagree on the size of said dog (i want tiny little teacup yapper and he wants big manly dog). we have *agreed* to get one of each … and i said i would buy a howdah for the big dog so little dog can ride on its back.

but really, it’s up to the humane society and what they want to give us!

I have a fluffball of a cat (more fur than flesh) and a ferret. Love them both to pieces.

We have 3 BIG dogs, 1 black lab and 2 lab-pittbull mutts. I beg for a little dog. But I think 4 would be a crowd!

We have two puppies and love them to death. Honestly, if you are getting a small breed, having a studio apartment shouldn’t stop you. Why? Because the smaller the space is, the easier it is to keep an eye on them while they are being house trained and otherwise trained to stay out of trouble. For the first month we had our pups, they had to be in the same room with us at all times, so we had baby gates up everywhere. Now that they are almost 6 months, they are allowed go wherever they want, except for the bedroom.

We have a Red Heeler. Unfortunately she was abandoned, but that means she is 2 y.o. and we didn’t have to do the whole potty training, chewing stuff. She is the best puppy ever!

Kendra–

I’m soooo showing that comment to Mr. Blueberry!!! This seriously reminds me of when I was a kid and wanted a puppy so desperately–I took one of my stuffed dogs and showed my parents how I would give the puppy food and water and take it for walks all the time. I made a PowerPoint presentation (this was on, like, the earliest version of PowerPoint ever). I wrote notes and made an argument. Yet it did no good. :-( Mr. Blueberry HAS to let me get a puppy!!!

SuzyCat–you have hermit crabs? I love them! I used to have a lot–had a whole big crabitat set up and everything. I invested a lot of $$ into crab care–giving them the dechlorinated water, rearranging the crabitat often, etc. This was my freshman year of college. But then my stupid roommate left the window open while I’d gone home for a weekend, and they all froze to death :-(. Mr. Blueberry likes crabs, too–we may get some more pretty soon.

We have a yorkie that we bought together, but I am a live in nanny so our puppy lives with my FI for now. I can’t wait till we’re married and I get to live with both of my sweeties! :)

I’m kind of on the same boat as you. My boyfriend and I share a very small studio in San Francisco and we would both like a dog (nothing small and yappie though, we want something around 40-70 pounds though I wouldn’t mind a pug since they’re so friendly!). I wouldn’t mind settling for a cat but he’s allergic and hates cats. *sigh* Can’t wait to get a larger apartment so I can get a dog! It doesn’t help that my neighborhood is so dog-friendly! There are dogs everywhere and a lot of establishments have water bowls for the dogs in front of their door.

We’ve got 2 dogs (his; boston terrier & chihuahua) and a cat (mine; orange tabby) in our newly combined apartment. They actually get along fairly well and generally ignore each other.

I’d highly recommend the boston as a good medium-sized breed for an apartment or small house. They’re totally comfortable being indoor dogs and hanging out most of the time, don’t bark a lot, but if you want to go out and run and play with them they’re happy to do so.

We have one dog, a mini dachshund (who isn’t so mini- 18lbs, although his mother was a standard). And we had a frog, Frogwarts, and a fish, But the fish ate my frog. I cried. We live in a one bedroom apartment, and Woofie is the perfect size.

We have two dachshunds (hot dogs!) that we could not live without. When I first brought up the subject of a puppy with my fiancee he was very passive about it-he never had a dog that didn’t live outside in a pen and wasn’t to happy about having what he thought would be a “girly lap dog”!
Once I brought my 8 week old, 3 lb, blue eyed, hot dog puppy home he was instantly in love.
A year later we had 2 puppies and they are literally the loves of our life. They are so spoiled it is ridiculous!
Dachshunds are actually PERFECT for apartments because they are tiny, shed almost never and are very clean dogs. Also, because of their long backs they are actually better suited for 1 level living arrangements-stairs are hard for them. I recommend also a male over a female-they are much sweeter and more calm-I have a boy and a girl and there is a huge difference.
