Reader Buzz: Sides

October 5th, 2006 @ 12:42 pm by Reader Buzz

Whenever I walk down the street or hold hands with Mr. Bee, I have to be on the left side otherwise it feels weird. I also sleep on the left side of the bed not because I need to be on the left side, but because I like to be on the side against the wall.

Do you and your significant other have sides?

My fiance prefers to sleep on the left side but also has this thing to be closer to the door in case of an intruder (yup, he’s my knight in shining armor). Well in order to get both we had to rearrange our bedroom. Now he’s happy so I am happy.

My boyfriend always stays on the side that is supposed to protect me from the world. He sleeps on whatever side of the bed is closest to the door and walks on the side closest to the street, etc. I don’t really have a preferred side.

I used to always want to be on the non-wall side, but since that happened to be the right side of the first bed we ever slept much on, now I’m always on the right regardless of where the wall is.

For walking, I just randomly stop for a moment when he keeps walking and then pop over to the other side on a semi regular basis. I don’t care which side it is, but I have to mix it up pretty frequently. Mr. Bluebell thinks it’s incredibly bizarre. :-)

i like to be on the left side of my fiance only because my left ear has been damaged so i’m hard of hearing. if i walk on the left side i keep asking him “what? what did you say???” i think that’s why most of my friends always want to sit on my right too.

i always sleep on the side that is closest to the wall. and really it’s because he gets up earlier than me and he says that he doesn’t want to wake me. :D

As I grew up, my dad used to always walk beside me on the side closest to the street, as lanmia said, it’s supposed to protect me from the things coming from the street. When I started dating, I wanted a guy who felt the same, but I didn’t have to say it. My fiance now, has always done it- one of the things I knew was right about us. :) Even when I asked him WHY he did that, he told me the exact same thing as my dad. But I HAVE noticed that in ALL pictures from the very start, I am always to his left. I sleep to his left, and hold his left hand. I kinda like this unspoken “trick”.

Amber - Mr. Bee actually told me about that theory recently. Pretty interesting. :)

We don’t have specific sides, either. Ever since we were taking a walk on campus a couple years ago (well, 18 months ago) and someone chastised him for not walking on the street-side (to protect me) he’s insisted on doing that. But we trade sides of the bed pretty frequently, just depending on what side I happen to be closer to when he comes to bed (ie how much he has to shove me over in order to get in bed, lol). And–this is really dorky–when we get Taco Bell drive-through and take it home, he always has to sit on my right side on the couch. This is because we share an order of Cheesy Fiesta potatos ad hold it between us–I’m a lefty and he’s a righty, so if he weren’t sitting on my right side then we’d both be trying to eat with our “wrong” hands. Lol we’re so cute/lame. :-)

I am a slight claustrophobic, so I cannot stand to sleep by the wall!

my fiancee ABSOLUTELY must walk on the left side of me, or he feels really weird.

when we first started dating, it used to puzzle me, and i just thought it was a weird quirk - so now, just for fun, sometimes i walk on the “wrong” side to see if he notices, and he always tries to finagle to the “right” side… it cracks me up.

in terms of sleeping, it’s the opposite, which throws me off, so we’re in discussion right now - i’m trying to keep things consistent, so i’m on his right side. :-)

Paul always sleeps on the side closer to the door, in resturants he sits with his back to the door (gentleman are suppose to sit with their back to the door so that if someone dangerous comes in she can see it and get away…they say Jesse James was killed because he sat with his back to the door and didnt see the shooter come in behind him), and walks on the side closer to the street. I usually walk on his left side though because I have three rings on my left hand and the diamonds hurt my husband’s hand when I squeeze his hand when we walk which I do often

I’m the exact same way. Holding his hand with my right hand is just more comfortable than the other way around. And I’m a left side of the bed girl, unless the bed’s against a wall and then I have to sleep on the side that’s open.

I don’t care what side I’m on holding hands, but I have to be on the left when we’re sleeping or it feels weird…

Huh, we don’t have the bed along the wall, we have the headboard against the wall. I never noticed that. He has his end of the couch, and he has to sleep to my right. I can’t imagine not sleeping on the same side!! And fiesta potatoes sound soooo good.

we have to hold hands on his right side. it feels SOOOOOOO weird to us when im on his left side. we’ve just gotten so used to it. so used to it that when im on his left side, he’ll either guide me by hand to his right or i’ll eventually run over. LOL.

i sleep on the side against the wall too because the bf has a tendency to be very “active” in his sleep and i usually end up half off the bed if i don’t sleep on the side against the wall lol

I sleep on the right side of the bed no matter where we are. As for walking, he always walks on the street side because he was taught that the gentleman stands on the street side to protect the lady from traffic. I find it very sweet and now when I’m out with male friends or coworkers I find it weird to be the person closest to the street.

when we’re walking, i stay on his left side because we’ll hold hands (we entwine our fingers) and i don’t want his fingers to squash my ring. in bed, since he tends to spread out in his sleep, i sleep on the right side against the wall. if i don’t, he’ll end up pushing me off… we need a bigger bed!

I ALWAYS have to be on the left side… walking, sitting, sleeping, etc. The only time I’m not on the left is when he’s driving so we have no choice. FI makes fun about me on that. I’ve tried to be on the right and it just feels. so. weird.

Whenever we hold hands, I’m on the left side of my bf as well. When we nap, I get the side closest to the wall. When I sleep alone, though, I like the side closest to the edge.

We don’t really plan this.. but I guess it worked. Like weddingwishes said, his side is which ever side I don’t want. =)

I always have to sleep next to the wall. I don’t know what it is but I noticed I did that throughout college too. Also, with the hand holding, I like to be on his left side because I carry my purse/bag on my left shoulder so it usually gets in the way or slips down. So I like staying on his left so my right hand is free from objects. hehe

I HAVE to sleep by the wall. I’ve always been like that. And if I’m staying in a hotel with two beds, I have to sleep in the one that’s closest to the wall. I’m just crazy like that.
