Beehive

October 8th, 2006 @ 1:46 am by Beehive

In today’s beehive:

  • Jayme is going to her ex-boyfriend’s wedding next week - what gift should she take?
  • Bella is having a destination wedding and is doing her own makeup. What mascara gives you long-lasting, lush, thick lashes?
  • Breezy is looking for bridesmaid dress shops in New York.
  • K is looking for a basic black wedding album.
  • creme_de_violet wants to know how much to tip an esthetician after a facial.
  • MA has bumps in her armpits from shaving and has really dry flaky eyebrows. Any idea how to get rid of these problems?
  • Amber wants to know whether you signed a contract when blocking hotel rooms and whether you were penalized if you did not use all the rooms.
  • Jessi wants to know how far in advance you need to start contacting hotels.

ok, i have a couple of weird body questions that I need answers for. First of all, (and this is going to get personal!), I have really bad bumps on my armpits from shaving. I think it is either razor burn or ingrown hairs and I dont want to pose in my wedding pictures with bumpy armpits! Any answers there?!?

Also, I have really dry skin around my eyebrows so my eyebrows get really flaky (and so does my nose) when i wear makeup or when I get hot and sweaty. Does anyone know how to get rid of it or temporarily stop it?!?

I just want to look pretty on my wedding day in about 4 months… and I know i will be self conscience with bumpy, red armpits and flaky eyebrows!

I want to know if anyone who has blocked rooms for their hotel had to sign a contract. And did you have to pay anything in advance? What happens if you don’t use all the rooms? Are you penalized?

creme_de_violet - I tip anywhere from 15-20% based on quality of service.

MA - I pluck my armpit hairs and have been desperately wanting laser hair removal for some time. I don’t have any good advice for you sorry. :( As for your eyebrows - do you exfoliate regularly?

Amber - we did sign a contract and they held the rooms until a designated date after which they released the rooms and we were not held accountable for paying for them. Each hotel has a different policy so be sure to ask.

Good luck everyone! :)

Amber - We signed a contract and they will hold the rooms until one month prior the wedding date. After that point, as Mrs Bee has said, they will release the rooms to general public.

Not sure about the armpit issue. I have bumps too and not sure what to do with them :(

i used to have a similar problem… so i stopped shaving altogther and started getting my underarms waxed…my skin has gotten a lot better because it doesnt get irritated as much and i would refrain from using too much deoderant right after removing hair so you let your pores breathe, and like mrs bee said make sure you exfoliate so it removes all dead skin that might cause buildup and block your pores causing more irritation…waxing also lasts much longer than shaving so i’ve sworn by it now.. hope this helps…

i would recommend tend skin. you can get it at sephora or any major beauty supply store. i use it after i shave and for a couple days subsequent. it has aspirin and is suppose to stop bumps from in-grown hairs etc.

ps it is a bit drying though

Lasering underams is brilliant.
I do it in the summer, and its heaven.
Though after you laser, the remainder of the hair left in the root still grows out.
So you may have black dots, but they go away.
And when the do, its sooo smooth!

MA, i would suggest consulting a dermatologist. the flaking that you’re having sounds like a common condition that is treatable with mild cortisone lotions. the doctor can probably advise you on how to treat underarms as well.

Jessi- it’s never too early to look for hotels. Once we solidifed our reception place, we blocked hotels at 3 different hotels (different prices ranges). You want them ready for when you send out save the dates, or when your website is available to your guests.

Ma- My eyebrows do the same thing, whether I wax them or not. It usually happens once my hairs are starting to come in. I have eczema, so I use my light cortisone cream once a day. Sometimes just a great face moisturizer works- just rub it in real good after a shower. Also, if you take really hot showers, that can dry out your sensitive spots.
As for underarms, I think it happens to almost everyone when they shave. I plunk them (I know, ew). And maybe instead of deordorant, you can use loose baby powder. Make sure your armspits are fully dried after a shower before you put on your shirt.

Thanks for all of the advice! I just finished showering and tried the baby powder and making shirt my arms were extra dry, so we shall see… i’m a poor college kid so laser is a thing of wishfull fantasy for my budget! waxing is a little more hard to find since I live out in the middle of nowhere, but I am willing to give it a try too!

Thanks for all of your help!

I know I’m late on this one, but Tend Skin, as recommended above has solved all my hair removal bump problems. It’s a little pricey, but a little goes a long way. Put it on with a cotton ball after you shave, wax, etc, it burns a little (bc it’s working right?).

Good luck!

I have to echo that once you can afford it, Laser is amazing. I paid $450 I think for 5 sessions (total) at a place in California where I live and it has changed my life - at least for my underarms :)

bella–i’m having a destination wedding too! in mexico though. for mascara, i highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend japanese brand Kanebo International’s 38 degrees celsius mascara. i’ve tried many different kinds of mascara over the years and nothing comes close to the kanebo one. it only comes off in really warm/hot water, doesn’t smear/smudge and makes my lashes look fabulous! i know in the city, oyu can get it at bergdorf, saks or neiman marcus and it goes for around $30. g’luck!

I am taking my bridesmaids dress shopping for the first time and don’t know where to start. I live in Washington, DC and bought my own gown here, but all but one of my girls live in or near NYC, so I want to find and order dresses through a store up in the NYC area. I’m thinking of starting at the Kleinfeld’s Bridesmaid Loft - any thoughts or suggestions? I’m just looking for a store with a wide selection of dresses. Thanks!

tend skin for razor bumps and ingrown/irritated hairs/follicles really works. my waxer told me to get it, and my derm recommended it as well… not just for shaving bumps, but also to prevent ingrowns after waxing. i get it from ricky’s, and the small bottle lasts forever.
