Open Question: NYC Hair Salon

October 9th, 2006 @ 12:44 pm by Open Question

Hi Weddingbee!

I’m looking for a hair salon or hairstylist to prep for wedding hair. I’ve already found a hairstylist for my wedding day, but since she’s freelance and charges more for regular cuts, I was wondering if you have any good recommendations for hair salons?

I’ve never really been all that satisfied with any hair salons that I’ve been to so this has been a longstanding issue. I’d appreciate it lots if you can share some of your favorite hair salons in New York City.

Thanks a lot!
Alice

I recommend Hair Kuwayama. its a tiny place, seats maybe 4 people, but after reading reviews on citysearch (link above) i went. Ive never been so satisfied with a haircut- and they are supposed to be great for color too.. don’t know which stylist i had but she really took her time cutting my hair, paid attention to literally every strand and responded to what i was looking for. i could tell the girl next to me loved her stylist as well!

i go to hairmates on stmarks. it’s a japanese salon, so sometimes communicating with your stylist is a little difficult, but they’re amazing with asian hair. i’ve only been going there for the past couple years after an unfortunate incident at jeffrey stein, where they made me look fabulous by spending an hour blowing my hair out with a layered cut… but when i got home and tried to style it the next day, i found that making asian hair voluminous is a skill that only comes with years of salon experience.

if you have asian hair, try them out. their prices are super reasonable and they’re the best with color!

i go to paul cucinello of christopher stanley salon for color, but he’s a bit pricey. i’ve been looking for a place that does inexpensive great cuts as well because i don’t do anything super fancy usually. i was going to check out the younghee kim salon because it’s pretty close by… i’ll let you know how it goes!

Thanks for all the great recommendations! I made an appointment for tomorrow with Ueno in Nolita after reading some reviews. I’m hoping it’ll turn out nice, I’ll keep you all posted!

I’m curious. I never know how much tip to pay at a salon. How much does everyone else tip?

If you want someone who will really listen to what you want, you should go no further. Before going to AR HAIR SALON , I had been going to a stylist for years who did a competent job with my highlights and cut, but I really wanted someone who would listen to what I wanted and who could do different things with my cut and highlights. I tried someone else, had a bad experience, and thought I would not venture beyond my tried and true stylist again. Then I got several recommendations for ARTHUR at AR HAIR SALON and read all the superb reviews about him on CitySearch. So, I decided to give him a try. He spends a lot of time listening to you, thinking about the right color of highlights to complement your complexion and the right cut to complement your face. And the results were fantastic. I’m looking no further - I just wish I had tried him sooner.

Try Benjamin at Salon Kiara. I think he charges about $65, and i have long straight hair. I didn’t like the hair cuts I was getting at other salons, until I found him, and I’ve been going to him for years now. He tends to cut it well, so it looks good at any length, I think once i went without a haircut for 5 months and it still looked OK. He had some really good advice going into my wedding, i.e. growing out layers longer, because he know I wanted to wear it down.

He has a really good eye for style, my finance even went to him for a pre-wedding cut. And I had another friend go to him and she had long curly hair.
