Servingware

October 9th, 2006 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

I’m so excited about what we’re doing for servingware at the reception :).

Since we’re not hiring a caterer, we decided to take it upon ourselves to come up with all the platters, serving bowls, etc. for the various items on the dessert buffet. My mom and I are both avid antique-ers and thrift store shoppers, so we decided to find everything there, looking at three types: silver, cobalt glass, and milk glass. And actually, I can’t take too much credit on this–it was almost all Momma Blueberry’s work. She found most things, cleaned all the silver, etc.

Here’s a sampling of what we’ve got, and what I’m (tentatively) thinking of serving in it:

My parents’ dining room table, completely taken over! What wouldn’t fit on the tabletop is in those bags and boxes underneath the table. Not sure what we’re going to do on Thanksgiving…

Also, I could tell a great story about how that table came to be theirs (and eventually mine, I suppose), but that’s best left to another entry. It’s another rescue story, though :).

Gorgeous iron positionable 3-tiered stand. We’re going to mix ‘n’ match the plates we put on it, and probably fill it with three different kinds of chocolates, or maybe just put baklava on all 3 tiers.

Silver platters. Not sure if we’ll have space or use for all of these, but at about $3 a piece, how could we *not* get them?

More various trays and plates. I looooove the cobalt glass one in the foreground!

Two-tiered tidbit tray (try saying that 3 times fast!). We’re probably going to put some of the sugar-free desserts on that, since there won’t be as many diabetic guests.

Large milk glass bowl. This will probably be filled with blue and white M&Ms or Jelly Bellies!

I love love love this cake stand! I have no clue what we’re going to put on it, but it had better be good! I love how in this pic you can see my big ol’ reflection in the background (I am NOT that fat–it’s the curvature of the glass!)

Cobalt blue vases (we have another one just like it). These may not make it to the reception; they may just get used at the day-after brunch.

Covered cake stand. This will probably be the home of my aunt’s famous sugar cookies. Mmmmm….

And finally…our cake stand! We found out they’re about $60 to rent and are available for purchase for about $70 at Nell Hill’s out in Atchison, Kansas. So my mom bought one, with the understanding that when she has grandkids, so they can come visit and get big pretty bithday cakes off the fancy cake stand. Don’t hold your breath, Momma Blueberry–we’ve got a few years to go!

(I only took it half out of the bubble wrap for the photo)

Also, at some point in the future I’ll be posting DIY instructions for making tiered and pedastaled stands out of regular plates. Hopefully I’ll get around to that in November.

I really like your silver cake stand. Is it, or anything similar to it, available online anywhere? My baker is charging $75 just to rent one. If it costs less or nearly the same to own it, I would rather do that!

you can totally turn that covered cake stand over and make it a bowl! if your aunt makes a ton of sugar cookies, she can fit more into the bowl that onto the stand.

flip over the stand, flip over the cover. put the cover’s handle into the upturned base and voila — bowl!

I love love love your two-tiered tidbit tray! And your cake stand. I love antiquey things, but I never have the time to go and search things out. They’re all so beautiful!

I love everything you got. I used cute stainless colanders at the bridal shower I threw for my sister to put scones in, it was super cute and totally reusable
