Vow To Be Fit: The Preface

October 10th, 2006 @ 11:05 pm by Mrs. Bee

I was supposed to start the Vow to Be Fit program today, but I spent most of the day at the doctor’s office so tomorrow it will be. I’ve taken all my measurements and even got weighed at the doctor’s office, so I know it’s accurate. ;)

Since Mr. Bee and I got married, I’ve gained around 12 pounds. Before that gain, I’d pretty much been the same weight for over a decade. I’m a petite 5′2″ so 12 pounds is a lot on my frame. Most of my clothes don’t fit anymore and clothes that were once big on me are now too small. My dad who’s always telling me that I need to gain weight, told me I needed to lose weight the last time I went home to visit. That’s when I knew it was getting serious.

I don’t believe in quick fixes - I firmly believe maintaining a healthy weight is a lifestyle choice that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. But I work long hours alone on a computer, eat crap, and don’t exercise at all. What I really need is a jumpstart to lose a couple of pounds and get motivated to achieve and maintain my weight/health/fitness goals. That’s why I’m doing this program. Plus my friend Rebecca has lost an amazing 30 pounds on it!

I’ll be writing about my progress daily and taking you along on the journey. I’m told women tend to lose more inches while men tend to lose more pounds. Inches it is then - my goal at the end of this program is to fit back into my skinny jeans. :)

Keeping a food journal is a really good start.

I’ve noticed all my girlfriends, and myself included when in a relationship gain weight. I think going out to eat is a favorite pass time of couples ;)

What an admirable goal! I read recently that one of the reasons that you gain weight when part of a couple is because you have a tendency to match your partner bite for bite–and when your partner’s a guy who can burn 2500 calories a day just by lounging around, the weight can add up fast! I’ve been consciously trying to avoid this, but I still know I need to do more.

I’m going to start a food journal, and following the 15 minute rule (when you think of something to eat, wait 15 minutes before eating it. After 15 minutes if it still sounds good, you can eat it!). The theory behind that is that cravings pass within (you guessed it!) 15 minutes.

I’m 5′2″ also so I know what you’re talking about–I’ve gained about 15 lbs since my skinniest days (about 6 years ago when I was in high school) and while I feel huge now, a lot of people still think I look “petite”. But even a couple extra pounds is a huge difference on me.

So while writing this, I ate some Nerds. Reeeal smart! :-P

There will be days when you just don’t feel like running on the treadmill or doing the elyptical for 45 minutes straight but just perservere. More than anything its a mental game.

I agree with you 100% when its a lifestyle change. Growing up I was always the fat kid, but i’ve changed my lifestyle tenfold. I eat small healthier meals throughout the day & I exercise at least 3-4 times out of the week. Plus, all of these factors makes you go to the bathroom (hint hint) everyday sometimes twice a day!

Good luck & you can do it !

I’m also 5′ 2″ (what’s with all of us?), and I’ve gained about 12lbs since high school (ten years ago). I was underweight then, so I could use a little more than that, but I wouldn’t mind being about 5-7lbs lighter.

My college graduation is coming up and I’ve gained around 10 pounds… I’m dread seeing my relatives as I’m sure they are going to poke fun of me for being fat. Damn Asians. Hope this regimen works for you!

I eat crap all the time too and I don’t exercise either. But I’m not getting married yet so I’m allowed!

Mrs Bee - I’d love a full report - how the stuff tastes, are you starving, and what other thoughts you have! I’m tempted :)

I hate skinny jeans too…I’ve never been able to wear them even in my skinny days in high school.
