A Personalized Stamp

October 11th, 2006 @ 2:32 pm by Mrs. Apple

The first time I ever saw wax seals was on Mrs. Bee’s personal blog back in 2004.

I absolutely fell in love with the idea, and the personal touch it gives invitations. I’m still undecided on whether I want to try it. Has anyone else tried to do them before?

Mrs. Bee, would you suggest another B2B investing the time and money on doing it?

I also got the new Williams & Sonoma Fall Catologue last night in the mail, and came across this product that was a little similar without the personal touch.

This is an embosser that personalizes gift tags, stationery, recipe and bookend papers. This would be great to use for wedding favor tags and invitations. You could also use this after the wedding - holiday gift tags, birthday tags, just about any kind of tag!

Wilshire Graphic Press (www.wgpress.com) offers amazing custom embossers ($60) and wax seals!

I have an embosser and I love it. I personalized our wish cards and napkins, and save-the-date envelope seals with it. I purchased mine from gwpress.com and although it is wedding specific, I can order other plates for everyday use for about $30.

I also have a wax seal stamp (from oldschoolseals.com). It’s fantastic! I have faux wax, which is a little more pliable than standard wax. It’s basically opaque glue sticks. I’ve heard that they hold up better through the mail. Also, you can do many ahead of time and then just use a small dab of the hot glue to seal them to the envelopes. Your seals are much neater this way and there isn’t the pressure for perfection that you would feel if you did each directly on the envelope. We’re planning on using these on our invitations.

We were going to use wax seals but my FH has used them for projects before with limited success. He said only about 1/2 of the seals turn out good enough to use them.

We ended up getting a custom embosser from Paper Source to stamp the outside of our Envelopements. It looked crisp and clean and people really liked it.

it was a lot of work and pretty expensive too. i mean it was kinda a fun first wedding project for us to do together (and the last ;)). the ones on the east coast made it intact, but the ones that travelled far arrived cracked. :(

i would suggest using the faux wax seals - they’re more affordable and durable!

I have a wax seal stamper…or whatever they are called. I use it on everything i send that is somewhat special. (like letters to friends and invitations.) I plan on using mine for my wedding next June. I absolutely love it! I often send letters to my best friend in California and i live in the midwest. My best friend said they always arrive in tact and beautiful. I got the stamper and the wax at the craft store Michaels. They might get a little expensive for wedding invitations though, because of all the wax needed. If you do decide to use them, just make sure you put down enough wax before stamping, or they dont turn out well at all!

I thought about doing it, but I agree with mrs. bee, very time consuming and expensive. I might do faux stickers or an embosser.

We used them for engagement announcements. We had gold sealing wax with a beautiful rose motif seal. While, let’s be honest, the wax is a lot of fun to play with, many of our announcements arrived sans wax seal. To make things worse, our recipients asked us, “we loved your announcement, but what was all that dirty stuff on the back of the envelope?” Not the best first impression.

If you really, really want to use one, I’d say use it on an interior envelope and let it dry for a significant amount of time before stuffing the interior envelope in the outer envelope.

And be very patient when you’re melting the wax to make sure you have enough on there to make the seal appear whole when you press it. I’d even err on the side of melting a little more wax then recommended, just to make sure your seal appears intact. If done right, these turn out really pretty!

We used a stamper and wax from wax-works http://www.wax-works.com it worked so well that we now bought a stamp with screw off stamper heads and use wax on everything. I have even stamped into cookie dough with it (I think I am addicted to this)
