Children’s Gifts

October 11th, 2006 @ 3:24 pm by Mrs. Butterfly

I’m at a loss. I have a junior bridesmaid and a ring bearer in my wedding party. I have no idea what to get them as a gift.

For the groomsmen, we bought the ties (which they can wear again), and fake business cards with nice, engraved card holders. I won’t tell you what I got for my bridesmaids because they read this sometimes - but let’s say that I bought them a small token of appreciation, along with their dresses.

But when it comes to the kids, I have no idea what to get them. The junior bridesmaid is 10 years old. Even from the moment she was born, I wanted her to be my flower girl. I was 17 years old at the time, and I loved taking care of her. Too bad for me, I am getting married too late for her to be a flower girl, so now she’s my junior bridesmaid. Her younger brother is turning 7 this month. He is sooooo adorable! I just want to squeeze him and kiss him and love him to death. When I told him he was going to be a ring bearer, he looked at me and said “No! I want to be a ring DRAGON!!!! ROOOOOAAAAAR!!” *flapping arms and breathing fire*

So what to get them? It’s so hard to shop for them, because the girl is too old for dolls but too young for purses and makeup. I also don’t want to buy her expensive jewelry because she might lose it. The boy, well, he’s still a child and I don’t know what he would really appreciate. I would like for both gifts to be a little nicer than a small trinket; something they can keep for awhile.

Any ideas?

A framed photo with you and each of them would definitely be something they’d keep. Otherwise you have to appeal to them, for the boy I’d go with a gameboy or similar with a game or two. For your junior bridesmaid, they like clothes at the that age so a gift certificate to their favorite store (i.e., Limited Too is very propular with the 9-12 year olds).

I have my 6 and 5 year old cousins as my flower girls and I’m going with Build-A-Bear and coloring books.

I’m in the same boat with my junior bridesmaid/flower girl/ringbearer. She’s about 10 years old, so we’re having her to all of that fun stuff. When I sent her a “will you be my flowergirl” card and gift, I got her a cute pink umbrella and wrote in the card, “So our little princess doesn’t get wet.”

Something she can use when it rains on the way to school.

Limited Too is popular — so is the Abercrombie (the jr version of Abercrombie & Fitch): http://www.abercrombiekids.com/

How about something from Pottery Barn Kids? If they are a bit grown up, Pottery Barn Teens?

I would get your ring bearer a coloring book of dragons and crayons. He would love it, and it would give you a hidden chuckle.

I was a junior bridesmaid when I was 11, and I was given a fake pearl necklace. At the time I had no idea it was an inexpensive gift, and I loved it…I felt so grown up.

My niece (then 10) was given a Build-a-Bear stuffed teddy bear. It’s approx. 30 dollars, and you can customize the outfit and the bear itself. As for your ring bearer, any toy car or Leggos would be great for them. I’m thinking on the practical and educational route.

What about a fun money bank with some “starter” money? Here’s a website with some non-traditional “piggy” banks…

does she like doll from American Girl? My coworker’s eleven year old niece still like that. I remember enjoying the series when I was @ that age.

as for the boy, something related to dragon and magic. harry potter stuff?

i agree with jenny…gameboy or something similar? unless they already have one/aren’t into it/parents don’t want it? ask them what their sibling would like–you’ll get a good idea, i think. or you could play it safe with gift certificates.

Something fun, that would last a while, is to get your girl a youth appropriate magazine subscription. It’s like the gift that keeps on giving! (I would do this in addition to something tangible when everyone else is receiving gifts.)

When I was ten I loved Hello Kitty and Sailor Moon :-). My cousins around that age enjoy jump rope and coloring.

our FG & RB are the same age!

I think jewelry is a nice gift for the girl and for the boy, toys or a gift certificate to the toy store so he can pick whatever he want. If you want to make it more personal, give it to him in a fun way - fill up a bag or box with assorted candy and slip the gift certificate in.. etc. since he likes dragons maybe a dragon costume.

the boy will probably not remember your wedding(sorry!) so a fun toy works, but i’m pretty sure the girl will remember it, so something sentimental is nice. (ps, I make jewelry..)

you can always ask the parents to see if they have any inside information about what the kids may like. just like you’d do for birthdays or christmas. my friend bought her flower girl a barbie doll since she was young [i think 5 or 6] and was into those then.

for the girl it would be nice to get her a small locket with a picture of you and her in it.

for the girl, charm bracelet w/ personalized heart, personalized necklace, or personalized musical jewelry box.

I read about this book (as reading selection) in an IndieBride forum, but I’ve decided to get it not only for my flower girl and ring bearer, but also our attendants: the children’s book “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard Warburg. The text is really great.

I bought my FG, who is probably still to young to appreciate this, a Juicy Couture jewelry box but will include a piece of jewelry…maybe earrings.
