Reader Email: Weight Watchers

October 11th, 2006 @ 1:06 pm by Reader Email

I actually gained around 25 pounds between high school and my wedding… I lost a bit before the wedding but not too much. Then after the wedding, I gained another 5-10 pounds. I made it my goal to go back to my high school weight, so after the wedding (and all the pressure was over) I joined Weight Watchers.

I love it because you can literally eat whatever you want, it’s just about following the rules and keeping track of your points. And it’s a very gradual process - it’s not a diet.. it becomes a lifestyle. I lose around 1-2 pounds a week (except the weeks of my period) so it’s VERY gradual but the results are very real.

I’ve lost 25 pounds so far over a period of about 7 months, and I’ve dropped from between a size 10-12 to between 6-8. For someone who has never lost weight without gaining it back within a month, this is a huge achievement for me. I highly recommend Weight Watchers for anyone with a personality like mine - likes to indulge once in a while, uses food as comfort, and likes to keep track of things with lists.

These are my before and after shots. The before is a few weeks before my October 2005 wedding, squeezing into this size 8 ann taylor dress. This was actually 5-10 lbs lighter than I was at my heaviest. The after’ is about 2 months ago, in the same dress, 25 pounds lighter. It’s too big now and I can’t wear it. It doesn’t really show the most dramatic change, which is my thighs, but I don’t have any random full-length shots of me in pants.

I’m curious as to how the points are structured. Do you have to eat off the menu they provide? I’d like to join but I’m afraid they would strip me of my Chinese food (it’s what I eat most of the time).

You look fantastic :)

I am doing weight watchers as well. In 10 weeks I have lost just over 19 lbs. It really is so easy to follow, and very supportive.

I love that I can still eat what ever I want, as long as I keep track of points and don’t go over (much ;) ). I especially love that if I hit the gym hard I get to eat a little more. It almost feels like cheating.

Wow, congrats on your weight loss! You look great! I also did WW — I’ve been doing it for 10 months and went from a size 8/10 to a size 2/4!! It’s amazing, and so easy to follow. Thanks for sharing your story. :)

hi everyone.. thanks so much for your comments! i do love weight watchers and even though i’ve finally reached a weight i’m comfortable at, i keep doing it because it’s become a part of my life.

to answer some questions… i still do eat chinese food quite often. my ultimate weakness is crab rangoons… yumm. all i have to make sure to do is to save up my points so i have enough to eat the chinese food, ie i’ll eat a very low-point breakfast and lunch if i want chinese food for dinner. another way is to exercise to gain some activity points, like kathleen mentioned– you can eat those for free that day.

rose– hehe yes that is my dog… she is in her kennel for the night. she looks angry because she has red eyes… they look black in normal light but show up red in pictures with a flash. and she’s not angry/sad about being in her kennel… she runs in there every night to go to bed. i think she likes the “quiet” time… she’s a very quiet dog. here’s a link to a better picture of her…

ok, convinced… i’m joining! is this old school where you have to go to meetings and weigh ins and such? not sure if i’m cool with that. and also… have you been working out while doing WW?

Our_Special_Day says:

I’m on week 2 of WW, actually gained 0.2 pounds. Did you exercise a lot while on the program? Also, did you eat up the 35 extra points you get each week? I think my main hurdle right now is trying to figure out portion size.

LS says:

I LOVED WW when I did it. I think it’s a really great program and definitely one of the best and healthiest “diets” around.

Another healthy lifestyle diet that I’ve seen mentioned on the knot is sparkpeople.com, which is along the same lines as WW - eat what you want, keep track, make healthly lifestyle choices and changes you can stick to. I’ve been using their (totally free) website for about 2 months and have lost 5 pounds.

Congrats Tina you look FAB!

justabride says:

wow..congrats on the weight loss! did you incorporate exercise as well or was it soley due to the diet change?

tina says:

hi everyone…

i did work out about 2-3 times a week for the first 3 or so months on WW. i lost about 2-3 pounds a week, but when i stopped working out i lost about 1-2 pounds a week.

portion size… i would recommend a few tips: whenever you eat, use a 1 cup measuring cup ALL the time (and a tablespoon). also when you buy snacks, portion them out into small ziplock bags and only grab one serving at a time.

also– i never went to any meetings, i did everything online.

i think i will start a xanga for all the weight watchers stuff… :)

You look amazing! Congrats!!! I too am a WW member, I joined with a friend after we had both gained the college 20. I actually gained over 50 lbs from my high school weight and was really depressed about it! So we joined together and lost together! I’m currently down 38 lbs after only 5 months and still going!

I love it too because you can eat whatever you want, it’s just about portion control! So it’s more of a lifestyle than a diet. Which is great and what makes me think I can do this and maintain forever!!!

Congrats!!
I have an upcoming wedding in a year & I wanted to shed all the weight that I gained after highschool. I joined with my mom & after 2 months I have lost 15lbs.

I get weighed in every thursday, which I think is awesome, because you can cheat on the weekend & have 4 full days to be good! :)
