Should you ever book a hair/makeup artist without first having a trial? There are some artists I see in Knottie bios and the like whose work is amazing. However, they don’t book trials until a few months before the wedding. Is it worth it to put down the non-refundable deposit without a trial first?

Because we’re planning long distance, I booked my hair and makeup before having a trial. I was a little nervous because there were mixed reviews out there of her, but my trial was amazing. I don’t regret hiring her one bit.

If some people don’t do trials until a few months out, then do they not book up as early as the others? Maybe there’s no need to worry about her schedule getting full so far away.

Good question. I was pretty sure about my hair/makeup artist before the trial and the trial sorta sealed the deal for me (or more like, for her ;) ). We had great communications, she was easy to work with and I found that to be the determining factor. I am sure you can book w/o trial, but I think it’s better to choose someone you will be comfortable with on your wedding day :)

HTH. Best of luck!

In hindshight, I wouldnt. Don’t do it unless you have to (eg. long distance bride). You want to book someone who is good with YOUR hair and YOUR makeup. It’s kinda taking a risk assuming that things will turn out great for you just because it worked out for someone else.

I have a friend who booked someone without a trial because she was very highly recommended on the Knot. The trial ended up bad and so my friend cancelled and lost her money.

Another thing to look for in your vendors is someone that you get along with and feel comfortable with. It’ll suck if you book someone and dont end up getting along with them.

Just my two cents =)

I pretty much had to put a deposit down first, because I’m planning long distance. I really didn’t want to loose out on booking my stylist, my first and second choice were actually booked up already.

I ended up having a trial a few months after booking, and it turned out great. It’s a risk that I decided to take, to book her without a trial, but I’m glad I did.

I did - they’re a professional, you’ve seen their work before, you tell them what you want, if you’re unhappy, tell them & your makeup & hair can always be changed… I wasn’t worried about it.
