Pepper & Salt Mill

October 16th, 2006 @ 5:59 pm by Mrs. Bee

Well before I got engaged and married, I always knew that I would register for a pepper mill. I’m obsessed with freshly ground pepper - I put tons of it on everything! One of Mr. Bee and my favorite snacks is tomato slices, basil, and fresh mozarella, drizzled with olive oil. It just wouldn’t be the same without freshly ground pepper yum!

Anyway we registered for and received a wooden pepper and salt mill set from Peugeot - a well known name in the peppermill game. They’ve since stopped carrying that model at Bed Bath and Beyond, but I must say that I was dissatisfied with its performance. It worked well enough at first, but then wouldn’t work well unless it was completely full of peppercorns. Then soon it wasn’t grinding at maximum capacity even when it was full. Substandard grindage is unacceptable. ;)

Well I saw this post today on Shelterrific where they featured (previously featured on at) the most gorgeous pepper and salt mill - the Perfex Salt & Pepper Mills. $75 @ Williams & Sonoma

These are so vintage and modern and adorable all at once. Me wants…. my precioussss…. I just love pepper lol!

Mrs. Bee,

I have these salt and pepper grinders! I love love love to cook and my sweet pea bought them for me for Christmas last night.

Unfortunately, I have to report their quality is slightly lacking for $75 each.

The salt grinder has corroded and rusted along the spring in the inside where the salt is ground, so now our salt comes out pink - from the rust! I have been meaning to take it back and just haven’t had a chance yet. The good thing is that Williams-Sonoma has a life time warranty- so you could get them and just take them back everytime they get rusty - and I love how they look so much that I just might do that.

Regardless, I wanted to let you know about my experience with their performance.

Thanks!

Mrs. Bee you are so right about the Peugeot grinder! We have one and it just barely grinds the peppercorns into quarters, which is too large in my non-professional grinding opinion.

If you are also looking for casual mills, the William Bounds ones are the best for both salt and pepper, because the milling devices are made of ceramic, which means no rust! They are not as pretty as the Perfex ones though.

Also, please make sure you are using dry salt in your mills, and that you keep your mills in a cool dry place. The rust means that there is moisture getting into the mills!

Alton Brown and Cook’s Illustrated both recommend the Magnum pepper mill. It isn’t very beautiful but we have it and it works AWESOMELY and it is easy to fill. You can even finely change the coarseness of the pepper.
