About Mrs. Blueberry

They’re *Magnets,* People!

October 16th, 2006 @ 3:57 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

Bah! So since sending out the save-the-dates, I’ve learned that numerous people were unaware that the thing on the left side of the STD was a magnet.

Here’s what it looked like:

They're *Magnets,* People! : wedding kansas city save the dates S2 s2.jpg

Now, I could see how maybe you wouldn’t know, just by looking at it. But the entire backing of the magnet is magnetic (as opposed to just strips of magnet or something), adding significant heft. You’d think that people would be curious as to why that side of the card was so heavy, investigate, and discover its magnitude (hahaha).

Mr. Blueberry suggested we mail out follow-up postcards, reading simply:

“It’s a magnet, stupid. Stick it on your fridge.”

While I give him an E for effort, I’m not sure that’s the best approach to keep our guests happy.

Are magnets just that uncommon here in the midwest? I can’t imagine so many people wouldn’t have heard of them!

A friend of mine sent hers out with a magnet, I told her they should put a little note saying, “Stick me to your fridge!” I don’t know if she did, though. She hasn’t had any trouble, though. Good luck!

you’d be surprised what the average guest has seen or not seen in regards to weddings. i guess it’s silly to us brides. we’ve researched the heck out of things, looked at countless pictures, read numerous stories on sites like theknot & weddingbee. but the typical guest might not be as wedding savvy and not up-to-date with all the wedding possibilities out there.

I think magnets are pretty uncommon in the midwest (I’m from IA)…everyone that we sent them to was like “oh what a CUTE idea…I’ve never SEEN anything like this before!” So funny.

You know, I worry that people don’t realize ours is a magnet either!! But even worse is that everyone keeps saying they got our “invitations” and I’m like IT SAYS SAVE THE DATE REALLY BIG - PLUS - it has, and i quote, the words “INVITATION TO FOLLOW” in it. So yeah, I think the bridal industry makes us brides think save the dates and std magnets are everywhere, but a lot of normal people still don’t expect to see anything other than a single piece of paper for the invitation. Sigh. I’m sure everyone thought that oddly heavy piece of paper on the left was pretty anyway!! :-)

aw, that’s sucks! i would have definitely wondered why one side is heavier than the other. but if the invitation was really nice, i wouldn’t dare try to rip the magnet off for fear of messing up the invitation. but that’s just me. =)

Miss Orange

When Mr. Orange and I sent our STD magnets to my relatives in Japan, my mom wrote a formal letter to go along with the magnet explaining that this seems to be a custom in the U.S. Several of my friends who had received them (in Japan) said they’ve never seen such a thing, but thought it was a good idea :-)

I’ve seen them some here in KY, but for the most part, I haven’t ever recieved a save-the-date anything for weddings.

It’s so true - we brides are experts on wedding stuff, but your average guest thinks STD is something not suitable for polite company…

I would just use word of mouth to get the idea across.

People can be really dumb. They kind of have to be hit on the head. We put our website address on the STD and no one looked at it. We should have said, “Please check out our site at http://www.blah.com.” Assume nothing!

The only reason I’m familiar with save-the-dates is because I work for a university. I have never received one for a wedding myself.

mrs bee is absolutely correct! i actually had to call people on my side of the family and tell them that they were magnets. you’d think they’d wonder why the piece of cardstock paper was so heavy and why it was glued on instead of printed on…..*sigh*

I included an oh so subtle hint in the text of my card (”pssst…use the magnet on the front as a reminder!”) so that my guests (mainly Chicagoans) would realize that it actually was a magnet stuck to the front of our STDs.

I’m from Cali and I’ve actually never heard of a STD anything until I started reading Weddingbee. Granted, it may have been because I haven’t been invited to a wedding yet but I thought that was the whole point of an invitation! I can understand that it may be more necessary for a DW but it’s not like you would send out a STD for a birthday party. (Maybe I’m just a naive, new-to-the-whole-wedding-planning-process person. =P)

Miss Blueberry. I love your STD. Where did you get it from? Also, what type of glue did you use to get the magnet attached. I’m trying to do the same thing, but can’t figure out how to best attach it.
