Dig in the Dancing Queen

October 18th, 2006 @ 1:23 pm by Mrs. Plumeria

Mr. Plumeria and I started our dancing lessons a couple of months ago - we want the moves to come naturally so we can enjoy our first dance and focus on each other, instead of struggling to remember which move comes on what count. Neither of us have done any dancing, other than a bit of ballet on my part, so we decided to forego the risk of embarrassing ourselves in front of hundreds of people and try lessons.

We have yet to decide whether the dance will be a romantic ballroom dance (a la Beauty and the Beast; when I was younger, I would swoon at the thought of a shimmery gold dress with frothy tiers of drapes and matching opera-length gloves) or a fun swing dance. I am leaning towards ballroom, not only because it’s more traditional, but because I will be able to stay in my dress for that type of dance. I can’t quite imagine trying to get all flashy-toed in a ton of heavy satin; plus, if I change, I will miss my chance to show off one of my favorite parts of my dress: the bustle.

We are privileged to have a couple of (talented!) family friends who offered to give us private dance lessons, but here are a few examples of dance studios in the SF Bay Area where you can sign up for classes.

Are you and your fiance taking lessons? What kind of first dance are you planning to do?

No dance lessons - we already dance a lot, not anything technical, but we’re generally first up and last off the dance floor at other weddings/events.

So, for our first dance, we picked a song we like and are just gonna move to it. We have the bonus of having danced to it before - sometimes just for fun we’ll put it on at home, since now that we know it’s our first dance song, it makes us both really happy to hear it.

I’m wary of over-choreographed first dances.

Hi! We’re taking dance lessons. We’re going to foxtrot to Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” We’ve learned the basic routine and will spend the next few lessons getting comfortable with a few other dances, including swing.

It’s a really fun thing to do together.

fi thinks he needs LOTS of practice, so when we worked up our wedding budget, we set aside $ for three rounds of dance lessons.

and i am insisting that he dance with me throughout the wedding.

We’ll have been takin gdance lessons for 18 months before we “perform.” We have the same feelings as you. We want to be relaxed and have a blast…and show off. We’ll be doing 1 minute or so of a rumba, and then finished with a minute or two of a triple swing…unless we swithc to just rumba.
