NWR: My iPod Died

October 18th, 2006 @ 10:44 pm by Mrs. Orange

I know this is so not related to weddings, but I need major hugs and support — my iPod just died. It skipped songs and did some funky things on my way home from work. I bought it 3 years ago. I’m not even sure if it’s worth sending it to support or if I should just get the new nano. I use it everyday to and from work and have never left it anywhere. I’ve left my cellphone, keys, and wallet elsewhere before, but never my iPod. I read before that some people take their iPod seriously — like it’s a pet or part of them even. It’s a sad day in Orangeville. :(

this sounds super sketchy, but a friend of mine is a computer genius and he said to put it in the freezer. Sometimes if it gets shaken up too much or too warm, it can cause the hard drive to expand(???) and by freezing it, you tighten the connections within the casing and it’s all better. Maybe try it, he said 24hrs should do it, in a plastic bag.

My iPod dies on me sometimes and my geeky friend told me to smack it on the back a few times. Wah-Lah, it came back to life!

i agree with disneyprincess and creme…you may not have to send it in–call tech support and ask them to help you out. if it’s in good condition, which it seems like it is, you really should be able to fix it. good luck!

Have you tried resetting it? My precious little pinky (pink mini) died last week and all I did was reset it and she WOKE UP!

The instructions are on the apple website. good luck. :-)

My mom found a company who sent her a box for her to send her mini in, and they checked it out and the problem was so small they didn’t charge her and sent it back…so it all cost her nothing. I can try and find the company name for you.

Similarly, my brother has literally man handled his iPod to the point that we’ve taken it in THREE times. Apple has been great every time, including the time they completely swapped it out (it was purchased in an apple store). The other times he had to reset it, as suggested above and I think he had to reload all his music each time.

Best wishes! I LOVE my iPod, too.

You know, I’m feeling the same way about my MacBook right now… I just got it recently; as a designer, it’s my career “tool,” and my charger is dying. So is a little part of me inside. :( I’m gonna head in to the store tomorrow; all of the reviews online show people with similar problems, though, who had to buy new chargers… so it looks like I might be shelling out $80 for a new one. Sigh.

Oh no! Hopefully it comes back to life! I once thought I lost my ipod and scoured the entire office for it. I later found it in my own bag!

I understand. If anything happened to my powerbook I’d mourn for a long long long time.

i second, third, fourth the ppl who recommended doing things - resetting, smacking it (if its already dead, it cant hurt right?) my boss’s daughter always messes around with his and it first went dead about a year ago. he would leave it alone for about 3 days and when he tried again it would work again! he did have an increase in issues with it dying on him, but it lasted him for another year before he had to buy a new one…

{{thank you weddingbee readers}}} Currently, my iPod sits in the freezer in zip lock freezer quart bag. When that’s done, iPod will also go through some pat on the back. And I pray for its revival. Will report back again. Cheers :-)

putting hard drives in freezers works, but not usually for very long– usually it’s recommended for things like, if your comp just died and you need to get the info off it and onto another comp.

i’d check the forums at ipodlounge.com. the users there are reeeeally knowledgable, and they have a lot of FAQ archives you can look through. you can do searches for the symptoms that your pod was showing- ie, folder with exclamation point, clicking sound, etc. hopefully it can help.

if that doesn’t work, honestly, i’d recommend you NOT bother with the apple store if it’s out of warranty and not covered by applecare. apple charges (usually) a lot for repairs. if you’re in manhattan take it to tekserve (on 23rd i think). they’re an authorized retailer and they REALLY know their stuff there. if they can’t help yuo, or recommend someone who can, your ipod is really and truly dead.

when my powerbook died, i took it to apple where tehy told me to buy an external hard drive so i could trasnfer everything…. before trying and failing. i spent 2 hours there in agony hoping that they could get my files to trasnfer over. they ended up not being able to save anythign and telling me to just ‘buy a new computer’. i took it to tekserve and they explained to me exactly what was wrong, what my options were, gave me data recovery specialists and then finally installed and sold a generic new harddrive that cost me about $200- an option apple didn’t even give me!

also, by company policy, apple isn’t able to answer any questions that aren’t allowed by the usage agreement- for example, if you ask them, “how can i get all the music off my pod” they won’t answer you. tekserve can be objective and helpful in recommending things like that (ipodrip) as well as telling you HOW to use software to do not-apple-sanctioned things.

phew. i guess i was kinda bitter about that. but, go apple anyway. and tekserve rules. haha.

That happened to my mini a few months ago-actually, it still worked but the screen went totally blank-nothing helped and it eventually died-I ordered a new, bigger and better refurbished model from ebay like that day!
I would be lost without my iPod. It is my bestest friend and traveling companion!

i thought most people knew - all ipod batteries have a lifespan of 3 years. my bf says that’s still one of the longest battery lifespans. just replace the battery?
