The Wonders of Registering

October 18th, 2006 @ 1:58 pm by Mrs. Strawberry

I get so giddy at the thought of registering. I really and truly do. I want my spatulas to match my mixing bowls. I want the sharpest knives. I want a mixer with all the attachments. I want a vacuum cleaner and a stainless steel trash can. I want a rolling pin and ice cream bowls. I want the spinning spice rack. I want it all. And I want it now. I’m the Veruca Salt of wedding registers. Here’s my wish list…thus far.

In your excitement about registering for gifts, I think you’ve lost all sight of what a blessing it truely is to recieve wedding presents. Who cares if your spatulas match your mixing bowls–at least you have a kitchen. At least you have somewhere to live. And youre giddy over a trashcan? Pide is a sin.

I love your bedding!! I never thought to look at Anthropologie for linens, but I’m heading over there now!

(and for what it’s worth, I totally got that it was tongue in cheek ;-) )

Registry items can really spill about the bride/groom. My brother registered for a microscope?? I mean, come on. What a nerd. But my cousin went to her new SIL’s wedding, and the whole family was appalled by what the new bride registered for, like they were the Trumps. Sadly, the bride acted like a veruca, and now the whole family is a little soured against her. Registries are a touchy subject it seems, sometimes.
We’re only registering for the things we really need, since we’ve lived together 2 years, most stuff has already be bought, so there isn’t much to ask for.

Mr. Orange and I registered as soon as we were engaged. We would not have done it if it wasn’t for our relatives and friends who wanted to send us a gift — And we wanted to avoid receiving goudy bowls or vases. He was moving out of his parents house and I was moving out of a roommate situation and so, we needed basic things like vacuum, plates, etc. We are VERY GRATEFUL that our needs were met…..

go to a store and play with the mixer — take the bowl out and put it back in, switch out the attachments, etc.
some people end up disliking the crank-up bowl and swap out for the tilt-back head; it’s smaller and less powerful, but they will actually use it!

p.s. register for more towels and bedding; those won’t last forever like a kitchenaid will!

Understand the tongue and cheek aspect — don’t worry. :) I know that you will be very grateful for whatever you receive. Plus, I think half the fun in registering is just picking the stuff; doesn’t mean you are expecting to get everything on the list from people. It’s just a wishlist; no bride is going to die if she doesn’t get every item on it. Your posts are fun to read! And Veruca Salt… LOL!

I actually haven’t even registered yet! :) I know Anthroplogie has a “wish list” but I”m not expecting many people to go there. :( Thanks for understanding where I was going with the post people..I promise…I’m not really that selfish! :) (Okay..maybe a little. Who am I kidding? I love pretty things!)

Is judging people who you don’t really know a sin?

ooh, nice stuff you picked out! we’re def. getting a kitchenaid for mr. violet.. he’s the baker. and i love to eat. haha. the garbage can is another must have.. but we want a rectangular one instead. the canisters are cool, very french.. and i like your light green theme going on.. very shabby chic.

we haven’t registered yet though, we plan on moving out soon and we’ll be buying some things already..

I’m really looking forward to registering. No more cheap pots and pans! And the KitchenAid mixer alone is worth registering for(tongue and cheek alert!!).

Miss Strawberry, I love you! I think it’s great to have the spectrum of price ranges when registering, and of course if someone can’t afford the KitchenAid, then they can get the spatulas. :-)

I love my KitchenAid. The one time I’ve used it, I enjoyed it. ;-)

I am excited to register as well to replace all the old, poor quality things we took in as hand-me-downs when we moved in together. I know it’s not at all about the gifts and I don’t plan on registering for anything we don’t need, but this is a part of weddings (guests like to have ideas/suggestions) and can be a very fun part if done with your FI, too. :-)

Miss Strawberry, you’re so cute!!! I totally got what you were going for in your post. Don’t worry about it one bit :-)

I know just the feeling about registering, too. “Kid in a candy store” doesn’t begin to describe the feeling I got when they first handed over that laser gun. But now we’ve pruned our registry to the point where it’s really just essential items (I must admit, at one point Mr. Blueberry had argued about the necessity of *4* batmobile-shaped pillows), all in a moderate price range.

But still, is there any other time in your life where you’re receiving so many gifts? Especially ones you get to pick out yourself! I think it’s just fine to be excited…as long as you don’t let it get in the way of your relationship with your FI :-)

I always wonder how many people that register for their kitchenaid actually use them more than once a year. It seems like the standard wedding thing you register for, but if you baked regularly you’d probably already have one! :D

fizzyg–I know what you mean on that. But moreover, I’m a *big* baker and so are my mom and aunt, and none of us use stand mixers because it’s too difficult to blend the dough evenly–we all use hand mixers! I got mine for (literally) $1.50 at a thrift store just to “tide me over” until I get my nice registry one, but I feel like the only bride in the world who doesn’t want one of the stand mixers.
