White vs. Ivory

October 18th, 2006 @ 4:31 pm by Mrs. Peach

Does it look weird if your wedding dress is white but your bridesmaids dresses are ivory and another color?

How about if your dress is white and your flowers are ivory? Or your dress is ivory but your flowers are white?

In the beginning I was 100% sure I wanted a white wedding dress. Then I tried on a few ivory dresses and realized that some ivory tones complement my pale skin better. But in the end, I ended up ordering a white dress.

I am just throwing these quesitons out there because for my bridesmaid dresses I would like some sort of trim/ribbon and was wondering if ivory would even be an option for the trim color. What do you think?

What do you prefer: Ivory or White when it comes to wedding colors?

The only thing I had a preference on was the invitations - I wanted ecru/eggshell/offwhite paper NOT regular white. Regular white paper is too businessy.

I’ve been obsessing over the same thing! I came to the conclusion that I want everything ivory, even though I know that these are little things that NOBODY except the bride pays attention to. Nevertheless, I’m going all ivory because it just makes me feel better.

a friend of mine who had an ivory dress had her groom wear a white shirt with ivory tie/vest. the ivory tie/vest looked great but it was obviously darker than her dress and didn’t really match anything else. her dress was closer to the white shirt.

i did everything white, but be assured that most flowers (roses in particular) are never purely white.. they are mostly ivory. but the “ivory” bouquet of white roses and orchids looked fine against the white of my dress. pure white flowers would look unnaturally bright.

i think ivory is a more forgiving shade :)

Ivory is typically more flattering and delicate, so that’s what I went with - but some people can pull off pure white beautifully!

Flowers, I’m at a loss. I don’t think either color would be bad, but I’ll let my florist guide me.

i live in chicago, and the majority of brides here do all white dresses.

definitely, you can never get completely white flowers, but the advantage, when you go with “white” flowers is that the ivory hue to the flowers will make the white of a dress more brilliant and brighter.

if you go with an ivory dress, i agree it’s more flattering of a shade, but unless all your linens (there are so many shades of ivory, believe it or not), there’s a slight risk that your dress will look more yellow and aged…

… unless that vintage look is the look you’re going for!

THere was a wedding in The Knot magazine (I’ll check the wedding at home) where the bride wore white and her BM’s wore ivory, and I thought it looked fine!

This is debated often on the knot: if the bride wears an ivory dress does the groom need to wear an ivory shirt with his suit/tux? I don’t think so…the conversation usually gravitates toward the fact that an ivory shirt looks dirty and an ivory dress not-so.

The last bride I saw in an ivory dress had sage-y green flowers and it looked great. The green with the white or off-white flowers helped separate the two so it didn’t make the dress look odd, or the color.

Sometimes it depends on the manufacturer of the dress. I have an “ivory” dress, but it’s pretty close to white… in fact, when I eventually post pics of it, most people will probably think it’s white! I think Mr. Plumeria will definitely have a white shirt.

In terms of bridesmaids, I think as long as there is a noticeable difference between the bride and the bridesmaids it should look fine! :) The subtle contrast could make for a very nice, elegant feel overall.

I have been agonizing over this too…my dress is ivory, but in pictures look white! It’s such a subtle “ivory” that I think I will probably just go with white shirts for the men. I kind of wish I had gotten a white dress just to save myself from the stressing (I swear the minute details are what get me!!) but the ivory one looked much better with my skintone.

My wedding dress is white but my MOH dress is a chiffon lace ivory. I agree ivory does compliment pale skin. Ivory does create a more vintage and antique feel to it. I am a big fan of that anways! -) Good luck!

I love ivory on my pale (”porcelain” heheh) skin. It brings out the pink rather than the pasty. :-P

I also brought a swatch from my dress into the tux shop when we picked out Mr. Blueberry’s and the other guys’ tuxes; our shop accomodated us in finding an ivory shirt that will match w/o being too dark.

In general, I honestly have no preference one way or the other–though I think ivory may fit with some styles and tones of weddings better than others, and vice versa–i.e. white may work better for an ultramodern wedding, ivory for one with a more vintage feel. But there are always exceptions that look beautiful anyway :-)

What about the possibility of your bridesmaids dresses being ivory with a white sash? Sashes are really in now, and you might be able to tie it together nicely. Perhaps with a swatch from the bridesmaids dress fabric you can find a tie for the groom/groomsmen?

oh im so confused, the dress i have finally found only comes in a creamy ivory. I really want it in either light ivory or off white. This duchess satin looks too creamy and i dont know if i should go for it at all. Its a bargain price and haven’t seen anything i like since. I’m brunette with olive skin. I have always had my heart set on a lighter shade. Sounds mad doesn’t it?

So talking about ivory versus white and what goes with what, my duaghters dress is a bery slight ivory. I chose material for flower girls by matching a swatch of her material, and am making their dresses. The two little boys ages 4 and 6, will be wearing suits, but I can only find white white suits, or ivory that is much much creamier and yellow than the bride and flower girls. the brdiesmaids are all wearing a sage green and the guys are wearing black suits with white shirts and black ties and vests. Do we go with the white, creamy ivory or balck for the little boys in the wedding?

I am considering an ivory dress for my wedding too. I personally like the look of mixing ivory and white together. If I do wear ivory, the groom will still wear a white shirt, and all of our table linens are white, so I think the contrast can be really nice. And white flowers will look lovely with either color dress. My wedding is in November, so I think ivory might blend well with the fall theme. I am considering orange, and burgundy flowers.

I have a diamond white dress. Im having the groom and guys wear an ecru color. The flower girl is in an ivory that I matched with material and am having the grooms aunt make. The ring bearers are wearing a stone color pants and hat(its closer to ivory) and I am finding an ivory shirt. My theme is vintage, so i thought i would stick with it. Im having a hard time finding ivory shrits for the boys. My colors for the bridesmaids are coral pink and the guys are acutally wearing a red in tie and possibly vest. So, i’m not sure what i’m going to do about the ringbearers bow and suspenders. ANy suggestions? I am debating on the coral, red, or keeping with the ivory. My idea was to keep me, the groom, the flower girl, and the ringbearers all the same color and adding the color accents everywhere else.
